Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo lower btop’s own overhead, first slow its refresh interval, then hide panels and process details you do not need. Start with update_ms at 2000 milliseconds or higher, keep proc_info_smaps disabled unless you need its extra accuracy, and verify the result on your system. These settings reduce how often btop samples and draws data, but upstream documentation does not publish a universal CPU or memory-savings percentage.
This is different from reducing the resource use of an application listed inside btop. If one listed process is consuming CPU or memory, investigate that process; changing btop’s display settings does not fix the workload itself.

What btop’s settings can—and cannot—reduce
btop repeatedly collects operating-system statistics, builds the process view, and redraws the terminal interface. Every refresh has work associated with it. Settings that reduce refresh frequency, visible boxes, or process-detail collection can therefore reduce btop’s workload. The upstream project documents what each option controls, but it does not provide controlled measurements showing that a particular option saves a fixed number of CPU cycles or megabytes of memory. Treat any improvement as an observation to measure locally, not a guaranteed percentage.
A process shown in btop is a separate matter. For example, if a compiler, browser, or service appears at the top of the list, btop is reporting that process; it is not causing the process’s workload. Use btop to identify the process, then troubleshoot that program independently.

There is also no single ideal profile for every terminal. A server administrator watching a long-running dashboard may value low redraw activity, while someone diagnosing a short CPU spike may need rapid updates for a few minutes. The right target is enough information for the task with no permanently enabled detail that you do not read.
Start by checking your installed btop version
Options can differ between releases, so identify the version before changing configuration. Run:
btop --version
The upstream manpage also documents -V as the version option. Compare the options available in your installed release with the matching upstream documentation rather than assuming that a setting from a newer checkout exists on an older package. The current upstream command-line reference is the btop manpage, whose text is dated 2025-05-01.
Version checking matters when a distribution package lags behind upstream. If a setting appears to do nothing, first confirm which binary is being launched and which configuration file that binary reads. A saved preference in one installation does not necessarily affect a second copy installed through another package method.
Increase the update interval first
The highest-impact, lowest-risk change is usually to make btop update less often. The update_ms setting controls the update interval in milliseconds. In its configuration example, the upstream project recommends 2000 ms or above for better graph sample times. A longer interval means fewer samples and redraws per second, so values and graphs will react more slowly.
Set an interval for a test run
You can set an initial interval from the command line:
btop --update 2000
The short form is:
btop -u 2000
These options set the initial update rate for that launch. Try 2000 ms first; if you do not need near-real-time changes, test a larger value such as 3000 or 5000 ms. Choose the slowest interval that still gives you useful feedback for the task at hand.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The interval is not a promise that btop will consume a particular amount less CPU. It changes how often work is requested. Other activity—such as a large process table or a changing workload—can still affect the result. Compare the same interval against the same general workload before deciding that it helped.
Save the interval in configuration
Set update_ms in btop’s configuration interface or in your btop.conf file so the choice persists. The exact location of the file depends on how btop was packaged and installed, so use the configuration file already associated with your installation rather than creating a second copy in an arbitrary directory. Keep a backup before editing, and change only the interval for the first comparison.
A longer interval is a trade-off, not a free performance switch. A 2000 ms interval can miss short spikes that a 500 ms interval would display, and graphs will have fewer samples over the same period. For routine status checks, that delay is often acceptable; while diagnosing a rapidly changing workload, use a shorter interval temporarily and restore the slower value afterward.

Hide boxes you do not use
The shown_boxes setting determines which major views btop displays. The documented box types include CPU, memory, network, process, and GPU views. Remove boxes that are irrelevant to the current job—for example, hide the GPU view on a host without a graphics workload, or hide network statistics when you are only watching processes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose views by task
- Process investigation: keep the process view and only the CPU or memory context needed to interpret it.
- Network troubleshooting: keep the network box and process information required to identify the responsible program; hide unrelated graphics.
- Capacity checks: show CPU and memory, and disable GPU or network panels unless they are part of the question.
- Long-running dashboard: display only the boxes you expect to read regularly, with a slower update interval.
The documentation identifies which boxes can be shown, but it does not quantify how much CPU or memory each hidden box saves. Removing a panel avoids the work associated with collecting and drawing that view on your system; measure rather than assuming a specific reduction.
Do not hide a box merely because it looks busy. If network throughput is the reason you opened btop, retain the network view and remove an unrelated panel instead. This keeps the display useful while limiting unnecessary collection and drawing. Revisit shown_boxes when your role changes; a profile suitable for a network incident may be excessive for an always-on process dashboard.
Make the process list less expensive
The process view can do more than display a simple list. btop supports process sorting, tree mode, per-process CPU graphs, detailed process information, and an option to read /proc/[pid]/smaps for more accurate memory information. Each extra detail should be enabled only when it answers a question you actually have.
Use sorting and filtering instead of permanent detail
For routine monitoring, sort by CPU or memory and filter the list to the processes you need to see. This gives you a focused view without leaving every optional detail active. When diagnosing a memory issue, sort by memory first; when chasing a runaway task, sort by CPU. After the investigation, return to a simpler list if the machine is meant to run btop continuously.
Recommended Free Tools
Sorting changes what reaches the top of the display; it does not reduce the work performed by the program being sorted. Filtering is useful because it keeps your attention on a smaller set of rows and can make a dashboard easier to scan. Treat these controls as task-focused presentation choices, not as a measured guarantee of lower overhead.
Keep tree mode and process graphs task-specific
Tree mode is useful when parent-child relationships matter, such as finding which worker belongs to a service. A flat list is easier to scan when you only need the largest consumers. Likewise, per-process CPU graphs add visual history but are unnecessary for a static inventory. Turn these features on for a diagnosis, then turn them off for a low-overhead dashboard if you do not need their information.
Detailed process information has the same rule: enable it when a field answers a specific question, record what you learned, and return to the simpler view. Leaving every visualization enabled because it might be useful later makes it harder to identify which setting affected an overhead comparison.
Leave proc_info_smaps off unless accuracy justifies the cost
The upstream configuration describes proc_info_smaps as “very slow” but more accurate because it reads each process’s /proc/[pid]/smaps data. That accuracy can help explain proportional memory details, but it is excessive for ordinary sorting and alerting. Keep it disabled during normal monitoring and enable it only for a short, deliberate memory investigation. Disable it again when the investigation ends.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because this option examines per-process memory mappings, its usefulness depends on the question. Use it when ordinary memory figures do not explain a suspected composition issue; do not enable it simply to make a dashboard look more detailed. The project’s description is qualitative—“very slow” and more accurate—not a published timing or memory penalty, so measure on the host if you need to understand its local effect.

Apply changes one at a time
Changing several settings simultaneously makes it impossible to know which adjustment helped or harmed responsiveness. Use this sequence:
- Record the current interval, visible boxes, process-list mode, and whether
proc_info_smapsis enabled. - Change only
update_ms, launch btop, and observe its own CPU and memory in a separate system monitor or process viewer. - Restore the original value if the display becomes too stale; otherwise keep the tested interval.
- Hide one group of unused boxes and repeat the observation.
- Turn off optional process graphs, tree mode, or detailed information that you do not need, testing each change separately.
- Run the same observation again under a comparable workload before deciding that a change made a meaningful difference.
Keep the terminal size, number of running processes, and activity on the machine as similar as possible between comparisons. A busy build, a large process table, or a sudden network transfer can change btop’s apparent overhead independently of your configuration.
Write down both the setting and the context. “2000 ms with CPU and process boxes” is reproducible; “btop seemed lighter” is not. If you later change terminal dimensions, process count, or the update interval, treat that as a new comparison rather than mixing observations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to measure btop’s own overhead
Measure btop as a process, not the totals it reports for the rest of the system. Open an independent operating-system monitor, note btop’s CPU and resident memory over a representative period, and then repeat after one setting change. If you use btop to judge itself, you risk confusing the monitor’s display of system totals with btop’s own resource use.
Use a repeatable comparison
- Let btop settle for the same amount of time before recording observations.
- Compare averages or a range over several minutes rather than a single instant.
- Perform the before and after runs while the host is doing similar work.
- Record the interval and enabled features with each observation.
- Repeat a surprising result; transient activity can dominate a short sample.
There is no upstream benchmark that turns these settings into a universal “saves X percent” claim. Report only what your own comparison shows, and include the interval and enabled features alongside the observation.
Resident memory can fluctuate as allocations are made and released, so one instantaneous reading is weak evidence. A short observation window that includes the same process-table size and similar terminal activity is more informative. If the result is within normal variation, describe it as no clear local change rather than assigning a precise saving.
Why btop may appear to use a lot of CPU
The refresh interval is very short
A fast interval asks btop to sample and redraw more often. If you are watching a dashboard at a sub-second cadence, test 2000 ms or more first. The display will update less promptly, but the lower sampling frequency may reduce btop’s own activity.
Too many views are enabled
Showing CPU, memory, network, process, and GPU boxes simultaneously gives you a broad dashboard, but it also asks btop to maintain every view. Use shown_boxes to keep only the views relevant to the current task.
Process details are enabled permanently
Tree mode, per-process CPU graphs, detailed process information, and especially proc_info_smaps add work to the process view. Disable the features you do not need for routine monitoring; enable them temporarily when their extra information is the reason you opened btop.
The workload changed during your test
A changing process table or a busy host can make btop’s use look different from one minute to the next. Compare under similar conditions and avoid drawing conclusions from a single spike.

The selected configuration is not the one you edited
A command-line --config choice can select a different file for a launch. If a saved interval or hidden box does not appear, verify the file used by that invocation and check the running version. This prevents mistaking a configuration-selection problem for a setting that has no effect.
How to make btop use less memory
Use the same staged approach, but watch btop’s own memory in the independent monitor. Hide unused boxes, simplify the process view, and avoid leaving detailed memory inspection enabled. The upstream material does not state a fixed amount of memory that any of these actions frees, so the result depends on the number of processes, enabled views, terminal environment, and workload on your machine.
Do not confuse btop’s memory column with btop’s memory footprint. The memory column describes another process; to evaluate btop, select btop’s own process in the separate monitor and observe its resident memory over time.
Memory-focused diagnosis has a deliberate trade-off. proc_info_smaps can provide more accurate information for an investigation, but the project calls it very slow. Use it long enough to answer the question, then turn it off before judging the steady-state profile. A dashboard that does not need proportional mapping detail should not pay that cost continuously.
Choosing settings for common situations
| Situation | Suggested configuration | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Always-on, low-overhead dashboard | update_ms at 2000 ms or higher; only essential boxes; no optional process details |
Slower reaction to short-lived spikes and less visual detail |
| Finding a CPU-heavy process | Sort by CPU; use a focused process view; temporarily shorten the interval if timing matters | More frequent updates increase work while the diagnosis is active |
| Investigating memory composition | Sort by memory; enable proc_info_smaps only for the investigation |
The option is documented as very slow, even though it is more accurate |
| Checking network activity | Keep the network and process boxes; hide unrelated GPU or graphics views | You lose at-a-glance information from hidden boxes |
| Watching parent-child workers | Enable tree mode temporarily and filter to the relevant service | Tree relationships can be less compact than a flat list |
These are starting profiles, not measured performance tiers. After selecting one, observe btop under the workload where it will actually run. A configuration that is light during an idle shell may behave differently on a build host with many short-lived processes.

Command-line options you can combine
You can start btop with an update interval and select a configuration file with the documented options:
btop --update 2000 --config <file>
--config chooses the configuration file for that launch. Replace <file> with a path that exists on your system; do not treat the placeholder as a literal filename. The short update option, -u, is useful in scripts or aliases, while a saved update_ms value is more convenient for an interactive setup.
Use command-line values for a controlled trial or a temporary diagnostic profile. Once you know the interval and views you want, save the corresponding configuration so later launches are consistent. When comparing profiles, note whether a command-line option superseded the value in the file.
When changing settings does not solve the problem
If btop remains unexpectedly busy after a slower interval and a simplified display, verify that you are measuring btop rather than a process highlighted in its list. Check whether optional process details were actually disabled and whether a launch command or selected configuration file is overriding your saved setting. Confirm the running version with btop --version, because an older package may use different options or defaults.
If the issue is a single listed application consuming CPU or memory, stop treating btop as the cause. Use the process name, command, and resource column to identify that workload, then apply troubleshooting appropriate to that application. btop can reveal the symptom, but its own configuration cannot reduce another program’s computation.
Best Value
Also check the measurement method. Comparing btop while one run includes a compilation, login storm, or network transfer and the other run is idle will obscure any configuration effect. Repeat with similar activity, and avoid turning an isolated spike into a permanent change unless the slower display still meets your monitoring needs.
A practical low-overhead profile
For a general-purpose terminal dashboard, start with a 2000 ms update interval, show only CPU, memory, and process information that you read regularly, sort the process list by the resource you are investigating, and leave proc_info_smaps disabled. Add the network or GPU box when that data is part of the question. Turn on tree mode, process graphs, or detailed memory inspection only for the duration of a focused diagnosis, then return to the simpler profile and measure btop again.
This profile follows the upstream controls without promising a predetermined saving. The useful target is not the smallest possible number at any cost; it is the lowest overhead that still gives you timely, accurate information for your task.

How do I reduce btop CPU usage?
Raise update_ms to 2000 ms or higher, hide boxes you do not use, and disable optional process graphs, tree mode, detailed information, and proc_info_smaps when they are unnecessary. Change one setting at a time and measure btop’s own process in an independent monitor.
Why is btop using so much CPU?
A very short refresh interval, many visible boxes, optional process details, or a changing and very large process table can increase its work. Test a slower interval and a simpler process view under comparable workload conditions. Upstream does not publish a universal CPU threshold or savings percentage.
How can I make btop use less memory?
Hide unused boxes, simplify the process list, and leave proc_info_smaps disabled except during a focused memory investigation. Observe btop’s resident memory in a separate monitor; the memory column inside btop belongs to the selected workload, not to btop itself.
Does increasing btop’s update interval reduce CPU usage?
It reduces how often btop samples and redraws, so it may lower btop’s activity, but the project publishes no fixed savings figure. The upstream configuration recommends 2000 ms or above for better graph sample times. Verify the effect locally and accept the trade-off of slower updates.

The Bottom Line
Set update_ms to at least 2000 ms, hide irrelevant boxes, and keep optional process details—especially proc_info_smaps—off unless you need them. Measure btop itself with an independent monitor under comparable conditions; there is no universal upstream CPU or memory-savings percentage.
