For safer WordPress maintenance, keep automatic core minor and security updates enabled, choose plugin and theme auto-updates individually, and make sure you can restore a current backup. Then monitor update notices, Dashboard > Updates, and Tools > Site Health: a switched-on setting does not guarantee an update completed.
Which WordPress update settings should you change?
WordPress core updates and plugin or theme updates are separate decisions. Most capable WordPress installations apply minor and security releases in the background. Plugin and theme auto-updates, by contrast, have individual controls in the dashboard. A cautious setup preserves core security updates, enables extension updates where recovery is dependable, and includes regular checks for failures.

- Plugins and themes: Decide item by item, weighing the time an outdated version may remain installed against compatibility risk and your ability to recover.

- Monitoring: Keep owner notifications usable and review update status and Site Health findings regularly.
WordPress recommends updating plugins and themes to their latest versions to help keep a site secure, but its documentation does not establish a universal rule that every site should enable automatic updates for every extension. The right choice depends on the site’s functions and recovery arrangements.
How to safely enable plugin and theme auto-updates
- Confirm recovery first. Ensure you have a recent backup covering site files and the database, and know how to restore it. WordPress advises backing up before updates and ensuring rollback is possible before relying on plugin or theme auto-updates (WordPress: Updating WordPress; WordPress: Plugin and themes auto-updates).
- Review the installed extensions. Consider how important each plugin or theme is to key site functions, how disruptive a faulty update could be, and how quickly you can respond.
- Use the per-item controls. In the dashboard, open Plugins > Installed Plugins and use each plugin’s automatic-update control; bulk selection is also available on the Plugins screen. For themes, open Appearance > Themes and inspect the available auto-update control for each theme. Labels may vary with dashboard or site configuration.
- Keep track of outcomes. WordPress documents email notifications after plugin and theme update attempts. Check those notices, then review Dashboard > Updates and Tools > Site Health rather than assuming the setting worked.
The per-plugin and per-theme dashboard controls were introduced in WordPress 5.5. If they are absent on a newer installation, a host or plugin may have disabled them; investigate the site’s configuration rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.

How often do WordPress plugin and theme auto-updates run?
WordPress says plugin and theme auto-updates run twice daily by default and rely on WordPress Cron. This is the documented default, not a guarantee that every site updates on that schedule: hosting settings, plugins, or other site configuration can affect behavior. The WordPress.org documentation page describing this cadence was last updated January 13, 2023 (Plugin and themes auto-updates).
Because these updates are not proof against missed runs, retain a usable notification channel and check status periodically. WordPress also needs to communicate with WordPress.org to check for and install updates.

How to choose which plugins and themes update automatically
Use the same practical questions for each extension; this is a decision framework, not a WordPress scoring system.

- Check whether the controls exist. Confirm the WordPress version and whether a host or plugin has disabled plugin or theme auto-update controls.
- Review Site Health. Follow up on background-update and connectivity findings, outdated PHP notices, or pending updates.
- Check WordPress Cron and hosting configuration. Plugin and theme auto-updates rely on WordPress Cron, and host configuration can affect execution.
- Confirm WordPress.org connectivity. The site must be able to contact WordPress.org to check for and install updates.
- Look for notices and pending work. Review update emails and Dashboard > Updates for failed attempts or updates still awaiting attention.

A backup only helps if it can be restored. Keep backups that include both the database and site files, and periodically verify that the recovery procedure is usable. WordPress recommends making a backup before updates; it does not prescribe a particular backup product or storage device (WordPress Developer Reference: Backing Up Your Database).

With recovery in place, preserve core minor and security updates, enable extension auto-updates selectively, and make monitoring part of routine maintenance. If your site cannot be restored promptly or no one can respond to update failures, address those gaps before treating automation as a substitute for oversight.
