How to Create and Use Custom Memoji on an iPhone

Make a custom Memoji in Messages, share its stickers, use animation on compatible devices, and edit or sync your avatar.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create a Memoji in the Messages app, then use its stickers in Messages and other supported apps. On compatible iPhone models, you can also send an animated Memoji message or appear as a Memoji during a FaceTime call. The steps below follow Apple’s instructions; labels may vary slightly by iOS version.

Create a custom Memoji

  1. Open Messages and open a conversation, or start a new one.
  2. Tap the Add or Plus button, then tap Memoji. If you do not see the option, swipe up.
  3. Choose the control for creating a new Memoji.
  4. Customize its features, such as skin tone, hairstyle, eyes, glasses, and available body options.
  5. Tap Done to save it.

Apple’s current instructions use the Plus button and the “New Memoji” option. See Apple’s Memoji instructions and the iPhone user guide for creating and sending Memoji for the official steps.

Send a Memoji sticker

  1. In a Messages conversation, tap Add or Plus, then Stickers.
  2. Open the Memoji tab and choose a sticker with the expression you want.
  3. Send it, or touch and hold the sticker and drag it onto a message bubble.

Memoji sticker packs are also available from the keyboard in Messages, Mail, and some third-party apps. Sticker availability is distinct from animated Memoji: stickers are the simple sharing option, while animation requires a compatible device.

Send an animated Memoji in Messages

Animated Memoji messages use your voice and facial expressions. Apple says this feature requires a compatible iPhone or iPad Pro; it does not apply to every iPhone. Apple’s instructions do not give an exhaustive model cutoff, so check its current compatibility information for your exact device.

Use a Memoji during a FaceTime call

Start a FaceTime call. After it begins, open More, tap the Memoji control, and choose an avatar. To change or remove it, return to the relevant FaceTime controls. Sync Memoji across compatible devices

Apple lists three requirements for making Memoji available across compatible devices: two-factor authentication for your Apple Account, the same Apple Account signed in to iCloud on each device, and iCloud Drive turned on. To enable iCloud Drive on an iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Drive, then turn on Sync this iPhone.
