Yes, Android still lets you install APKs from outside Google Play. The permission flow depends on your Android version, and separate rules can block a particular install—for example, an app may target an unsupported Android version or a work-device administrator may restrict installs. These are distinct checks, not a universal ban on sideloading.
What Android means by sideloading
Sideloading means installing an Android app from an APK obtained outside Google Play. Android supports this: Google’s Android App Bundle FAQ says, “AABs do not prevent users from installing APKs from any source.” An APK still needs a cryptographic signature to be installable. There is no single “sideloading restriction.” An installation can be stopped by the source-app permission, Android version compatibility, a device administrator’s policy, or a problem with the APK. An app can also apply its own licensing checks after installation; that is different from Android refusing to install the package.

Android 8.0 and later
- Start the APK install from the browser, file manager, or other app where you opened the download.
- If Android prompts you, open that source app’s Install unknown apps control and allow installs from it.
- Return to the APK and continue in the package installer. You can change or revoke the source app’s permission later.
The authorization applies to the app initiating the installation—not to every app on the phone. Settings names and navigation vary by manufacturer and software build, so use the prompt or search Settings for “Install unknown apps” rather than relying on one universal menu path. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Android 7.1.1 and earlier
These versions use the older Unknown sources setting, or may show a one-install approval prompt. The exact experience depends on the release and device. Android also notes that some network providers may not allow installations from unknown sources. Android Developers: Alternative distribution options
Why Android may still refuse the install
The APK targets an older Android version
On Android 15, a new installation is blocked if the app targets an API level below 24 (Android 7.0). Apps already installed when the device upgrades to Android 15 remain installed. This compatibility rule is separate from permission to install from an unknown source. Android documents an ADB bypass for developer testing; it is not a normal consumer fix. A device administrator blocks unknown-source installs
On a managed device, an organization can use Android Enterprise policy to disallow installs from unknown sources. The cited policy documentation says previously installed apps remain, but future installations are blocked. If this is a work or school device, ask its administrator rather than trying to override management controls. Android Developers: Android Enterprise security

Even with source permission, installation can fail if the file is damaged, incorrectly packaged or signed, or not compatible with the device. Android’s permission setting only permits the source app to request an install; it does not validate a file’s safety or guarantee compatibility.

The app imposes its own licensing or integrity check
An app developer can use Play Integrity to assess whether an install meets the app’s requirements. For example, a sideloaded copy may be treated as unlicensed for entitlement purposes. That verdict comes from the developer’s integration and does not mean Android has disabled sideloading generally. Android Developers: Play Integrity API setup and verdicts
What the 2026 developer-verification rollout changes
Google’s published rollout, as described on pages accessed October 4, 2026, began September 30, 2026. Its initial protections apply to installs from participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand on certified Android 7 or later devices. Google’s FAQ distinguishes that stage from direct sideloads and stores outside the initial list; it describes global expansion as planned for 2027. This is not a blanket September 2026 ban on direct APK downloads. Coverage and user experience depend on region, device certification, store, developer verification status, and rollout state; consult Google’s current developer verification FAQ and rollout page for updates.

How to troubleshoot an APK install safely
- Check the source. Install only an APK from a publisher or distribution source you trust. Android’s support for APKs does not certify third-party download sites.
- Check the initiating app’s permission. On Android 8.0 or later, confirm that the browser or file manager that opened the APK is allowed to install unknown apps.
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the app supports your Android version and device; Android 15 blocks new installs of apps targeting below API 24.
- Check device management. If the phone is managed by work or school, an administrator may prohibit unknown-source installs.
- Separate install errors from app errors. If installation succeeds but the app reports a license or integrity problem, the issue may be the developer’s entitlement checks, not Android’s installer.
When comparing install sources, consider who publishes and signs the APK, whether that source provides updates, whether it is maintained and trustworthy, and whether your device and its policies permit installation. A different source can also mean a different update path. Do not disable protections as a routine workaround.
