Which Windows Shortcut Should You Try in an Emergency?

Five keyboard actions for common Windows emergencies—and what each can and cannot do.

For Windows 10 and Windows 11, these five keyboard actions cover distinct urgent situations: opening Task Manager, trying to recover a blank display, reaching security options, locking your session, and closing the active app. None is a universal reset, and each depends on Windows still accepting input.

Which Windows shortcut should you try?

Situation Shortcut What it does Important limit
A frozen or troublesome app Ctrl + Shift + Esc Opens Task Manager directly Windows must still respond enough to open it.
Blank or black screen Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B Attempts to wake the display or reset graphics-driver handling It may help, but it is not a guaranteed repair.
Need account or system options Ctrl + Alt + Delete Opens the Windows security screen Available actions depend on the device and account configuration.
Leaving the PC unattended Windows + L Locks the computer Secures the session; it does not repair a malfunction.
Close the active app or open shutdown options Alt + F4 Closes the active item; with no windows open, prompts for shutdown It is not a forced shutdown and may not affect an app that has stopped accepting input.

Microsoft lists these actions in its Windows keyboard-shortcut reference. Some shortcuts vary by app or settings.

How do I open Task Manager with the keyboard?

Use Ctrl + Shift + Esc

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager directly. If a particular app is stuck but Windows still responds, Task Manager can help you inspect it or restart it. Select only the affected app when ending a task; ending a process can discard unsaved work.

This shortcut is not a cure for a PC that has stopped responding entirely. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guidance also describes using Task Manager when the cursor remains visible. If Task Manager opens, Windows Explorer appears in its process list, and the desktop or taskbar is missing, restarting Windows Explorer may restore them. That step applies to that situation; it will not resolve every black screen.

What do I press when my Windows screen goes black?

Try Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B once. Microsoft describes the combination as waking a device when the screen is blank or black; its troubleshooting page characterizes it as a graphics-driver reset. Treat it as an attempt, not a promise. If the display remains blank, continue with the appropriate display or recovery troubleshooting rather than repeatedly assuming the shortcut has fixed the cause.

How do I reach Windows security options?

Use Ctrl + Alt + Delete

Ctrl + Alt + Delete opens the security screen. Depending on your Windows setup, it offers options such as locking the PC, switching users, signing out, changing a password, or opening Task Manager. Choose the action shown on your screen; not every option is available in every configuration.

How do I lock my Windows PC quickly?

Use Windows + L

Press Windows + L to lock the computer when you step away. Anyone returning to the PC must unlock it to resume your session. This is a security action, not a way to unfreeze an app or recover a blank display.

What does Alt + F4 do if an app is stuck?

Use it only if the app can still receive input

Alt + F4 sends a close request to the active app or item. If no windows are open, Windows prompts for shutdown. A hung app may ignore the request; the shortcut does not forcibly terminate its process. If it is still not responding and Windows itself remains usable, try Task Manager instead.

When shortcuts are not enough: open Windows Recovery Environment

If Windows will not start normally or the desktop is unavailable, Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is a separate route to troubleshooting tools. Microsoft documents access through Advanced startup in Settings, or by holding Shift while selecting Power > Restart from Windows. At the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart there. These are recovery routes that involve choosing an on-screen power control, not keyboard-only shortcuts. Some devices also have manufacturer-specific recovery buttons or key combinations.

Use the least disruptive recovery option that fits the problem and read each screen before confirming. Microsoft warns that some recovery options can cause data loss; reset or reinstall choices are more disruptive than basic startup troubleshooting. Keep backups where possible. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery-options guide, WinRE access guide, and sign-in troubleshooting guidance.
