Which Windows 11 Features Should You Turn On? What “Off by Default” Means

Windows 11’s “off” can mean an optional component, an opt-in setting or a managed-device control. Learn what to check before enabling a feature.

There is no single Windows 11 switch called “off by default.” A feature might be an optional component you have not installed, a setting you have not opted into, or an update feature held back on a managed device. The headline’s seven features and the reasons three stayed on while four were turned off are not identified here, so it would be misleading to present a made-up list as the result of a personal test. Here is how to evaluate the Windows choices that can be verified.

What “off” can mean in Windows 11

Before deciding whether to enable something, identify what kind of feature it is. Windows uses different mechanisms for optional components, personal settings and features controlled by servicing or organizational policy.

  • Optional component: Some Windows capabilities are available to install when needed rather than present by default. Microsoft documents these as Features on Demand and notes that navigation and labels can vary by Windows version and update. See Microsoft’s Optional features instructions.
  • User choice: Some experiences require you to opt in or select a preference. Recall snapshot saving, for example, requires user opt-in; Windows Backup and device-usage personalization are also user choices.
  • Managed-device control: Some features introduced in monthly cumulative updates may be temporarily off on managed devices. Availability can depend on the relevant update, a later annual feature update or administrator policy; this does not mean Microsoft universally disables them on consumer PCs. See Microsoft’s enterprise feature-control documentation.

Examples of settings you can assess

Recall snapshot saving

Recall is available only on eligible Copilot+ PCs, not every Windows 11 computer. Saving snapshots is opt-in. Microsoft says snapshots and related contextual information are encrypted and stored on the local hard drive, and Recall requires Windows Hello authentication. Review the eligibility and controls in Microsoft’s Recall guide before enabling it. Whether the searchable activity history is useful enough to keep is a personal choice; do not assume this feature is available on hardware that does not meet its requirements.

Windows Backup

Windows Backup can back up selected settings across devices where you are signed in with your Microsoft account. It is a separate user choice, not an optional Windows component. Check which settings are selected in Microsoft’s Windows Backup Settings Catalog and decide whether syncing those preferences across your devices is useful to you.

Device usage settings

Device-usage choices help Windows tailor tips, suggestions and recommendations to how you use your device. Microsoft says you can change these selections later in Settings. If you prefer not to receive this kind of tailored guidance, review the choices described in Microsoft’s device-usage settings guide.

How to find an optional Windows feature

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Optional features.
  3. Review the installed and available features, then add or remove the component you need.

Microsoft’s instructions warn that paths and labels can vary by Windows version and cumulative update. The Optional features page is for optional components; it is not a master list of every Windows setting or every feature controlled by an organization.

Choose based on use, eligibility and control

For each feature you are considering, check what it does, whether your device and account qualify, how it handles data, and whether it creates a documented storage or resource cost. Then weigh that against a real use case. A preference that suits one person is not a universal recommendation, and an administrator-controlled feature may not be something you can enable yourself.

Microsoft’s page on essential services and connected experiences for Windows provides context about built-in services. Essential services should not be treated as if every one were a freely switchable optional feature.
