Secure a smart home by protecting the router first, separating IoT devices from computers that hold sensitive information, using unique passwords and multifactor authentication, and keeping devices updated. Then review the privacy and remote-access settings on cameras, speakers, and other devices. No single router setting is enough on its own.
Why the router is the first place to start
Your router connects smart devices to each other and to the internet, so its settings affect the security of the whole home. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes the router as central to IoT privacy. Its 2019-era guidance also cited a market estimate of more than 20 billion internet-connected devices worldwide by 2025; that was a forecast, not a count of devices verified in 2025.

Router menus differ by manufacturer and model. Look for the settings named below in the router’s app or web interface, and consult its manual if a label is different.
Harden the router before adding more devices
- Change the router administrator credentials. Replace the default administrative username and password if the router allows both to be changed. Do not reuse a Wi-Fi password or another account password.
- Set a private Wi-Fi name and strong password. Avoid names that reveal your name, address, or router brand. Use a password that is unique to this network.
- Choose the strongest available Wi-Fi security. Enable WPA3 Personal if the router and devices support it. If WPA3 is unavailable, use WPA2 Personal. Avoid leaving the network open or using an obsolete security mode.
- Install router firmware updates. Check for updates in the router’s app or administration interface and enable automatic updates if offered.
- Leave the firewall enabled. Disable administration from the internet unless you have a specific need for it; remote administration exposes a management interface beyond your home network.
Inventory devices and isolate IoT traffic
Use the router’s connected-device list to make an inventory. Include cameras, door locks, bulbs, speakers, TVs, appliances, hubs, and sensors. Recognize devices by their manufacturer or model where possible; an unfamiliar name is not proof of an intruder, since some devices appear under a component or network-chip name.

Move smart-home devices, especially cameras, off the network used by computers that store financial documents or other sensitive files. A guest or IoT Wi-Fi network is often the simplest option; a VLAN-backed network can provide more control when the router supports it. The aim is to limit what a compromised smart device can reach, not to make it impossible for devices to communicate with their own cloud services.
The FTC recommends a separate network for cameras. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) also advises separating smart-home devices from computers holding sensitive financial documents. Router implementations differ: some guest networks block communication with the main network, while others have different options. Check the router’s documentation and test that your phone or computer cannot reach devices on the main network from the isolated network if that separation is what you intend.

Some smart-home controls depend on a phone and device being on the same local network. If pairing or control stops working after isolation, check the router and device instructions for supported network arrangements rather than putting all devices back on the sensitive network by default.

Give every account its own credentials and access rules
- Replace factory-set passwords on devices and their apps. Use a different, strong password for every device and cloud account.
- Turn on two-factor or multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever it is available, including the manufacturer’s cloud account. For administrative accounts, choose phishing-resistant MFA when the service supports it.
- Remove accounts belonging to people who no longer need access, and give each remaining person only the permissions they require.
- Disable remote administration or remote viewing when you do not use it. Where remote access is necessary, protect the account with MFA and check which users and devices are authorized.
NIST’s smart-home cybersecurity guidance, dated April 2, 2025, notes: “Many attacks on smart home devices, including the incidents of hackers talking to babies through connected video monitors, have been linked back to reused passwords.” Reusing credentials can put a camera or monitor at risk even when the router itself has not been compromised.

- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
Keep devices patched—or retire unsupported ones
Enable automatic firmware and app updates on the router and smart devices where available. Subscribe to vendor security notices and check whether a device is still supported. A device that no longer receives security fixes can remain a weak point even if its settings are otherwise careful.
NIST advises replacing or retiring older devices that can no longer receive updates. Before replacement, remove the unsupported device from the network and close or delete its associated account if you will no longer use the service. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for securely resetting or disposing of the device.

Reduce camera and microphone exposure
For each camera, monitor, or voice-enabled device, decide whether remote access is actually needed. Then review the settings that govern who can use it, what it records, and where recordings or voice data go.
- Use encryption and HTTPS for connections where the device or service offers those options.
- Limit administrator access to people who need it, and review access logs when available.
- Set recording retention deliberately and review the manufacturer’s data-sharing controls.
- Place cameras and microphones carefully. Avoid bedrooms and other private areas unless you have consciously accepted the privacy tradeoff.
Compare routers by security controls, not headline speed
A fast advertised Wi-Fi rate does not show whether a router isolates IoT devices, receives updates, or protects its administration interface. Compare security, support, privacy, coverage, capacity, ease of management, and any recurring service costs. A mesh system may help cover a larger home; a single router may be sufficient for a smaller one. Neither choice replaces unique credentials, updates, and network separation.
Two manufacturer examples illustrate why a model name alone is not a complete security assessment. The listed features below are those documented in the cited product materials; they do not establish the products’ current price, availability, support duration, or overall security quality.
| Example | WPA3 documented | Guest network documented | Secure boot documented | Other details established here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TP-Link Archer AX55 | Yes, per TP-Link’s datasheet | Yes, per TP-Link’s datasheet | Not stated in the cited datasheet | Automatic update policy, support life, privacy practices, coverage suitability, and total cost are not established by the cited details. |
| NETGEAR Nighthawk MK83 | Yes; NETGEAR documents WPA3-Personal | Yes; NETGEAR documents a separate guest Wi-Fi network | Yes, per NETGEAR’s product page | NETGEAR describes optional Armor service; its subscription terms vary by region. Other details should be checked for the exact region and product configuration. |
For a broader standards-oriented checklist of consumer-router cybersecurity requirements, consult NIST IR 8425A. Before choosing a model, verify its current firmware and support information, how its guest or IoT network works, account security options, privacy and telemetry policies, and any subscriptions needed for features you plan to use.
