The most approachable first build is a receipt: connect the printer correctly, choose the paper width, and send it ESC/POS commands.
What you need before you start
ESP32 boards offer Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options, and Espressif’s Arduino core supports the ESP32 family. Espressif describes ESP32 as “a single 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi-and-Bluetooth SoC designed by Espressif Systems.” Its current Arduino documentation lists ESP32, C3, C5, C6, H2, P4, S2 and S3 families as supported: Espressif Arduino ESP32 Getting Started. Choose a development board with USB-to-serial built in and headers that are easy to connect on a breadboard.
Most small receipt-printer projects use UART/TTL communication and ESC/POS commands. ESC/POS is the command set used to print text and receipts, format QR codes and barcodes, send bitmap graphics, feed paper, cut it where the printer supports a cutter, and trigger a beep. Common paper widths are 58 mm and 80 mm; configure your software for the width of your printer rather than assuming the two are interchangeable. The ESC/POS component documentation describes these capabilities and widths.
Wire and power the printer safely
For PNP-500/RS203-class setups, the printer connects over UART/TTL and needs its own specified power supply. Do not power the print head from the ESP32 board. Before turning anything on, verify the printer’s supply voltage, UART logic levels, pin assignments, and a shared ground between the ESP32 and printer. Some combinations may need a UART level shifter; check the selected hardware’s requirements. The printer examples document the interface and external-power arrangement: Circuit Digest’s ESP32 thermal printer project and DigiKey’s ESP32 thermal-printer tutorial.

Gather the basics
- An ESP32 development board with USB-to-serial and accessible headers.
- A 58 mm or 80 mm ESC/POS thermal receipt printer, matched to your software configuration.
- The printer’s specified external power supply and compatible thermal-paper rolls.
- Jumper wires, and a UART level shifter if your hardware requires one.
1. Make a receipt, ticket or mock invoice
This is the simplest first project because it stays close to the printer’s core job: turn formatted text into a paper receipt. Add buttons or a small web form to select items, then print a heading, aligned columns, a total, and a short closing line. You can adapt the invoice example in Circuit Digest’s ESP32 thermal printer project.
Start with text alignment and paper feed before adding more elaborate formatting. The ESC/POS component supports receipt columns, feed, and cutter commands for compatible printers: ESC/POS thermal-printer component. A mock invoice or event ticket is a useful weekend output even if you never connect the form to a payment system.

- 【Complete Ready-to-Use Kit】Includes a 58mm thermal label printer module and Lonely Binary Type-C TTL Base Board, ready for ESP32-S3, ESP8266, and other 3.3V/5V microcontrollers via UART
- 【Single-Cable Power & Data】Smart base board negotiates with USB-C PD adapters to deliver 9V to the printer while powering your MCU, so one Type-C cable replaces multiple supplies and messy wiring
- 【Important Power Requirement】Requires a USB-C PD charger that supports 9V output. Standard USB ports or PC Type-C connections provide only 5V and will NOT power the printer module
- 【Multiple Interfaces & Fast Printing】Supports UART TTL, RS232, and USB communication with 203 DPI resolution, up to 80 mm/s print speed, and 48 mm print width for labels and receipts
- 【Wide Compatibility & Support】Works with Raspberry Pi Pico, ESP32, and other UART microcontrollers, with sample code compatible with the C++, ESP-IDF, and MicroPython
2. Print QR codes, barcodes and image labels
Turn the printer into a compact label maker: print a QR code for a URL or Wi-Fi credentials, add a CODE128 barcode for an asset tag, or include a small monochrome logo. Circuit Digest’s example covers QR codes, barcodes, and bitmap output: ESP32 thermal-printer project.
The example reports a 384-pixel bitmap width, but that is specific to the cited example and should not be treated as a universal printer limit. Check the printable width and bitmap handling for your exact printer before designing a logo or label layout.

- The 58mm embedded micro thermal printer has excellent performance, clear printing and beautiful structure, and is widely used in medical instruments, testing instruments and other equipment. CAD or 3D drawings are available. It works perfectly with your device, making printing easier than ever. Easily embedded into any type of instrumentation for printing.
- This thermal receipt printer can be connected to MCU, Android, Linux, Windows systems and other platforms, and Android provides a secondary development kit. It can easily print text, pictures, barcodes, QR codes, etc. Provide ESC/POS printing instruction set and development materials.
- The power supply of the printer is 5~9V; the physical interface of RS232/TTL+USB is provided, and the default is RS232. If you need to switch to TTL, you can contact us and we will tell you how to switch.
- We really like this printer because its easy to make Bold, underline , inverted text , variable line spacing, left/center/right justification, barcodes with adjustable height, and even custom QR code.
- Open the paper compartment cover on the front panel to change the paper, the operation is simple and convenient. The structure is beautiful, and the slider can be moved to fix the printer on the device by twisting the screws on both sides of the paper bin.
3. Build a Wi-Fi or MQTT message printer
Use the ESP32’s network connection to print a weather reading, reminder, home-automation event, or timestamped sensor log. One approach is a small web page hosted by the ESP32; another is to subscribe to an MQTT topic and print a short message when an event arrives. DigiKey’s tutorial identifies optional Wi-Fi or MQTT controls and sensor-and-timestamp text as project uses: DigiKey ESP32 thermal-printer tutorial.
Keep the printed format short and predictable. For example, a sensor log can use one line for the reading and another for its timestamp, avoiding the need to rework the UART and ESC/POS printer layer.

4. Try a retro or public web print station
For a more ambitious build, make a Game Boy-style Bluetooth front end that sends short text to the printer, or host a deliberately limited page that accepts a message and prints it. Both concepts reuse the same UART and ESC/POS path as the earlier projects; the front end is the new work.
Treat this as a challenge build, not a turnkey design. Before allowing access beyond a local network, validate message length and content, apply rate limits, and add a physical cancel button. Those safeguards help prevent unwanted or excessive print jobs.

Choose a project by the work it adds
| Build | Complexity | Connectivity | Output | Power and enclosure considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Receipt or invoice maker | Lowest; begin with formatted text | Buttons or a small form are optional | Columns, totals, feed, and compatible cutter commands | Printer needs its specified external supply; basic bench setup is enough to start |
| QR, barcode, or image label printer | Moderate; adds code or bitmap formatting | Not required for local printing | QR codes, CODE128 barcodes, or monochrome bitmap graphics | Same separate printer-power requirement; allow for accessible paper loading |
| Wi-Fi or MQTT message printer | Moderate; adds network handling | Wi-Fi web page or MQTT | Messages, sensor readings, reminders, or event logs | Same printer supply; a permanent installation needs a suitable enclosure |
| Retro or public web print station | Highest; adds a front end and input safeguards | Bluetooth or a limited web page | User-submitted short text | Same printer supply; plan for a cancel button and a safe, accessible enclosure |
The complexity comparisons are design judgments based on the documented print, bitmap, and network capabilities in the ESC/POS component, Circuit Digest example, and DigiKey tutorial.
