The best window for a houseplant is the one that delivers the right amount of usable light to the plant’s actual position—not simply the one with a particular compass direction. Start with the plant’s needs, compare how bright the spot is and for how long, and account for obstructions and seasonal changes. A light meter can help compare locations, but no single reading is a universal verdict for every plant.
Does a “bad window” explain why a gifted plant is struggling?
Inadequate light can impair growth and, over time, contribute to a plant’s decline. University of Minnesota Extension explains that without adequate light, a plant cannot manufacture carbohydrates and its energy reserves are depleted. That establishes why light matters; it does not show that window choice is the leading cause of houseplant deaths or that most gifted plants die for this reason.

Light is one possible cause when a plant looks unhealthy. Pale or yellow leaves, stretched stems, leaf drop, and poor flowering can point to insufficient light; scorched or bleached leaves can indicate too much. Those symptoms are clues to investigate, not proof of a light problem by themselves. Consider the plant’s care and conditions as a whole, and use its response alongside observations of the location.

How do you choose between windows?
Use orientation as a first clue, then assess the light where the pot will sit. University of Minnesota Extension’s guidance groups north-facing windows and fairly dark corners with low-light plants; east-facing windows or spots near a west-facing window out of direct sun with medium-light plants; and bright south- or southwest-facing windows with high-light plants. These are broad starting points, not guarantees: a roof overhang, nearby building, tree, curtain, or the plant’s distance from the glass can change what reaches its leaves.

- Intensity and directness: distinguish bright direct sun from bright indirect or filtered light.
- Duration: estimate how many hours the plant receives useful light; different plants have different needs.
- Placement and obstructions: compare the spot at the plant’s height, not just the view from the room. Moving the pot farther from the glass or placing it behind an obstruction reduces incoming light.
- Season: exposure changes as the sun’s angle and strength change through the year.
- Plant and growth goal: a foliage plant that tolerates low light is not a good benchmark for a sun-loving succulent or a flowering plant.
Which plants fit low-, medium-, and high-light spots?
The following examples come from University of Minnesota Extension’s houseplant guidance. “Low light” means lower light, not no light; growth may be slower, and a plant’s watering needs can fall in a dimmer location.
| Light category | Examples | Published ranges from University of Minnesota Extension |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Chinese evergreen, cast iron plant, parlor palm, dracaena, pothos, philodendron, peace lily, snake plant, ZZ plant | 50–150 µmol m⁻² s⁻¹ PPF; 50–250 foot-candles; 10–15 watts |
| Medium | Ferns, rubber plant, fiddle-leaf fig, spider plant, begonia, jade, hoya, peperomia, monstera | 150–250 µmol m⁻² s⁻¹ PPF; 250–1,000 foot-candles; 15–20 watts |
| High | Cacti and succulents, citrus, culinary herbs, hibiscus, gardenia, jasmine, kalanchoe, geraniums, orchids | 250–450 µmol m⁻² s⁻¹ PPF; more than 1,000 foot-candles; more than 20 watts |
These are the Extension’s published category ranges, not universal thresholds for every species or room. The watts figures describe energy use by a bulb, not the intensity of natural window light, so do not use them to rank windows. Plant-specific recommendations can be narrower: Penn State Extension says jade grows and looks its best with four or more hours of direct sunlight daily. The orchid guidance on Penn State’s page applies to the orchids it discusses: it recommends east or west windows and says a north window probably will not provide enough light for those orchids. For indoor herbs, Penn State recommends a sunny location such as a south-facing window; inadequate light can leave them thin and spindly, with smaller leaves and less aroma.

Can a light meter tell you which window is right?
A meter can make comparisons between locations more concrete. Penn State Extension describes meters that read foot-candles and lux; its 2024 guidance calls 100 foot-candles a common low-light baseline, while cautioning that recommendations vary and precise levels are guidelines. A reading does not identify a universally correct window on its own: plant type, exposure duration, and the plant’s observed response still matter.

University of Minnesota Extension describes PPF as plant-usable photon output per second and PPFD as that output reaching a surface, such as a leaf. Foot-candles and lumens are also encountered, but lumens describe brightness to the human eye rather than plant-useful wavelengths. Watts measure energy use, not actual light intensity. As a practical approach, use the same meter in candidate spots and compare readings at the plant’s position; treat the result as a relative guide, not a stand-alone diagnosis.

What if the light changes with the season?
A spot that worked in winter may receive stronger sun in spring, and the sun’s angle changes across the year. University of Minnesota Extension advises moving plants toward brighter spring locations gradually over one to two weeks to reduce the risk of scorching. Pale patches or crispy leaf edges can be signs that the transition is too fast. Reassess the plant’s placement when seasonal light changes rather than assuming its winter position will remain suitable.
What can you do when no window provides enough light?
Supplemental lighting can make up for insufficient natural sunlight. When choosing and positioning a grow light, University of Minnesota Extension recommends considering PPFD, distance from the source, spectrum, and duration rather than relying on bulb wattage alone. Its general guidance lists 12–14 hours of light for foliage houseplants and 14–16 hours for flowering houseplants, while noting that requirements vary by plant. A full-spectrum or balanced LED grow light with a timer is one practical way to provide supplemental light; follow plant-specific guidance and watch how the plant responds.

- Widely Used and Visible Quality: Our grow light is suitable for indoor potted plants or an indoor garden. The lamp have a USB connector and tested for a lifetime of up to 50,000 hours.
A simple way to make the choice
- Identify the plant’s light preference. Check a reliable care reference for the species or type; do not assume all houseplants want the same exposure.
- Inspect the likely spots. Note window direction, direct versus filtered light, hours of exposure, distance from the glass, and obstructions.
- Compare candidate locations. Use a meter, if available, to compare readings at the plant’s position, and interpret the figures as guidance rather than a pass/fail score.
- Place and observe. Watch for stretched growth, pale foliage, leaf drop, poor flowering, or scorch, while remembering that these symptoms can have causes besides light.
- Adjust gradually when exposure changes. In spring, move plants toward stronger light over one to two weeks rather than making an abrupt change.
- Supplement if needed. If natural light is inadequate, consider a grow light and account for its distance, spectrum, intensity, and daily duration.
