Which Samsung Galaxy phone should you buy?
Samsung describes Galaxy A as its more accessible everyday range, Galaxy S as its premium flagship range, and Galaxy FE as bringing selected S-series experiences to a more accessible price point. Its range guide is for the UK, so check local model names and availability elsewhere. Samsung’s guide to its phone ranges also positions S+ for a bigger-screen experience, Ultra for advanced S-series camera, performance and productivity features, and Z for foldables.

- Choose Galaxy A if your main tasks are browsing, messaging, social apps and streaming, and you want to control the upfront cost.
- Consider Galaxy FE if a particular S-series feature matters to you but a standard flagship is outside your budget. Compare the actual FE and A models’ prices and capabilities before deciding.
- Choose Galaxy S if you will make regular use of its more advanced camera technology, processing power or productivity features.
- Consider S+ or Ultra only for a specific need: a larger screen, advanced camera features or productivity tools are worth paying for when you will use them.

Samsung US lists the following starting prices before eligible trade-in. These are US figures from a dynamic product page, not guaranteed prices or a guide to other markets.

For comparison, Samsung Electronics America’s March 2026 MSRP list gives the unlocked Galaxy S25 FE at $649.99 for 128GB and $709.99 for 256GB, and the Galaxy S26 128GB at $799.99. Compare the price you would actually pay, not just a headline starting price. Account for storage configuration, carrier or plan conditions, trade-in eligibility and any promotion. Trade-in offers can change the cost, but only if your device and purchase qualify; check the terms before counting a discount in your budget.

Should you buy a Galaxy A phone or an older Galaxy S?
Do not compare family names alone. An older S may retain previous-generation premium features, while a newer A may have newer everyday-focused capabilities. Samsung recommends comparing camera performance, battery life, software support, storage and price when weighing an older S against a newer A. Use Samsung’s range guide as a starting point, then compare the exact models.
- Camera: decide which lenses and camera functions you will actually use. Samsung positions S as having more advanced camera technology and A for everyday camera needs; check reviews or specifications for the specific generations rather than assuming every S beats every A in every use.
- Performance and display: demanding games, intensive multitasking or heavier apps may make S-series processing power more valuable. For ordinary apps, browsing and video, consider whether the A model’s performance and display are sufficient. Compare refresh rate and other display details by model.
- Battery and charging: compare the exact capacity and charging claims. Manufacturer runtime guidance is not a guarantee of your own battery life; usage and conditions matter.
- Storage and expansion: choose enough built-in storage for your apps, photos and videos. Samsung’s US comparison says A17 and A27 support external memory cards up to 2TB, while A37 and A57 do not. Confirm card compatibility and the exact variant before buying.
- Software support: compare the model’s regional update commitment and how much support remains, especially for older or imported phones.
- Total price: compare the price of the exact storage variant and condition, including any carrier requirements, against what you gain in features.
How to compare Galaxy A models without paying for extras
Samsung US currently lists A57 5G, A37 5G, A17 5G and A26 5G. Use the specifications for the exact model and local version: a higher position in the range does not automatically make a phone the better purchase for your use.

Check the feature difference that matters to you
Samsung’s comparison identifies differences in refresh rate, memory and storage, battery charging, camera hardware and features. Put the details you care about side by side. If you do not game or multitask heavily, extra performance may not justify a higher price; if camera flexibility matters, compare the actual camera hardware rather than relying on the A-series label.
Decide whether you need expandable storage
In Samsung’s US comparison, A17 and A27 support memory cards up to 2TB, whereas A37 and A57 do not. A27 is not among the four models listed on the current US A-series product page cited above, so verify its local availability and specifications before treating it as a shopping option. Do not assume a card slot exists just because another A model has one.

Check the update commitment for the individual phone
Samsung US currently states six years of security and software updates for A-series devices. Check the individual model’s regional terms, especially if you are considering an older or imported phone: a family-level statement does not establish the remaining support period for every device in every market.

How to set a budget that reflects the real cost
- Set a maximum price before comparing models. Decide whether that limit is for the phone alone or includes a plan, accessories and financing costs.
- Compare like with like. Match storage capacity, unlocked or carrier version, and new or renewed condition. A lower starting price may be for a different configuration.
- Check trade-in and carrier conditions. Treat a discount as part of your calculation only after confirming eligibility, required plan terms and when the credit is applied.
- Pay for storage only when you need it. Compare the price difference for a larger built-in capacity against your expected use and whether the model supports expandable storage.
- Use dated MSRP as context, not a promise. Promotions and availability change; check the live local listing at purchase time.
What if you want a cheaper premium Galaxy?
A Galaxy FE or a certified renewed phone may be worth comparing if you want selected flagship features without paying the price of a new flagship. Samsung describes its Certified Re-Newed Galaxy phones as previously owned, refurbished and certified by Samsung. For a new-phone price reference, Samsung Electronics America’s March 2026 list put the unlocked S25 FE below the S26 128GB in MSRP. That difference alone does not establish which is better value: compare their current prices, storage, features and support for the specific versions available to you.
Check your market before you buy
The A-series lineup, model names, carrier compatibility, storage variants, update policies, promotions and prices can differ by country. The A-series prices and update statement above are from Samsung US; the range-positioning guide is from Samsung UK. Check Samsung’s local store and support information for your country, and verify network compatibility if buying an imported or carrier-specific model.
