If Gemini 4 Argon is missing from your model list, it may not have rolled out to your account yet. Google says Argon is initially available to trusted cyber defenders through its Fairwind Program, with broader access planned but no public release date or eligibility list announced. If you can use a Gemini model but receive an error, check the error code: a 429 can indicate a quota or spending limit, while a 503 points to temporary service unavailability. Those problems need different fixes.
Is Argon unavailable, or is your request being limited?
Start with what you can see. If Argon does not appear in the model selector or your account cannot choose it, that is an access question. If you can send a request but it fails with an HTTP status or Gemini error code, that is more likely a quota, billing, request, or service issue.

A 429 by itself does not prove that Argon is unavailable to you. The response’s code and message, the product you are using, and the project or account involved help distinguish access from throttling.

Why Argon may not appear
Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026, with initial access limited to trusted cyber defenders through the Fairwind Program. Google says access will expand to developers, enterprises, and consumers as it gathers early-tester feedback and iterates on safeguards. Koray Kavukcuoglu, SVP, Google DeepMind and Chief AI Architect, described the approach this way: “Safely releasing frontier capabilities at this level requires a phased approach.” Google’s announcement

The announcement does not specify a public release date, a geographic availability matrix, or which consumer plans and API tiers qualify. So a missing model selector is consistent with the staged rollout, but the announcement cannot establish why a particular account is excluded or when it will be added. Do not assume that upgrading to a particular plan guarantees Argon access.
Google also announced introductory API prices of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached input tokens priced 95% below the input-token price. These are announcement figures, not confirmation that the API is available to every developer today. Google’s announcement

What a Gemini API 429 or 503 means
429: quota or spending limit
Google measures API limits across dimensions including requests per minute (RPM), input tokens per minute (TPM), and requests per day (RPD). Limits apply to the project, not separately to each API key, and vary by model and usage tier. Daily quota resets at midnight Pacific time. Check the limits for the project that owns the key in Google AI Studio; a limit shown in documentation is not a universal guarantee of capacity.
A 429 response with RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED can mean that a request or token quota has been exceeded, or that a spend-based limit was reached. Google evaluates documented spend-based limits on a rolling ten-minute window. Which limits apply and whether an account is eligible can change, so rely on the live project limits and the response message rather than a quota number copied from a general guide. 503: temporary service unavailability
A 503 UNAVAILABLE means the service is temporarily unavailable. Google’s error guidance recommends waiting and retrying with exponential backoff. A 504 deadline_exceeded is different: the request did not complete within the deadline. Gemini API error reference
What to do, step by step
- Identify the product. Determine whether you are using Gemini Apps, Gemini API through AI Studio, or a cloud deployment. Consumer-app usage caps and API project quotas are checked and handled differently.
- Capture the exact failure. Record the model identifier, API version, full status code, and error message. For an API request, confirm that the selected model and API version support the requested feature, and check which project owns the API key. Google’s troubleshooting guidance
- Check the active project limits. In Google AI Studio, inspect the limits for the project associated with your key. Consider RPM, TPM, RPD, model, tier, and any spend-based restriction; do not assume that a different key avoids a project-level cap. Google’s rate-limit documentation
- Retry only transient failures, and bound retries. For transient responses such as 429, 408, or 5xx, use exponential backoff with jitter. Google’s examples begin at about one second and increase to two, four, then eight seconds. Stop after a bounded number of attempts instead of retrying indefinitely. Google’s troubleshooting guidance
- Fix client errors instead of retrying them. Do not automatically retry 400, 402, or 403 responses. Google notes that these can indicate invalid API keys, depleted prepay credits, or malformed syntax. Correct the request, credentials, or billing issue first. Google’s troubleshooting guidance
- If Argon is absent, treat it as an access issue. Check the account and product surface you are using, but recognize that Google’s announcement does not provide a public eligibility checker, release date, or plan-to-access mapping. Repeated retries will not make an unlisted model available.
Gemini Apps limits are not API quotas
In Gemini Apps, usage limits can change with testing, availability, and capacity. The app notifies users when they approach a limit and indicates when it will refresh. After reaching a cap, you can wait for the refresh; a subscriber can continue a conversation with Flash-Lite. Gemini Apps limits help
