For a small remote office, start with the Firebox T25; for a typical small-to-midsize branch, compare the T45; and for a larger or busier site, look at the T85 or rackmount M-series. Choose by the throughput you need with security inspection enabled, VPN workload, interfaces and required remote-access features—not by headline firewall throughput or employee count alone. WatchGuard’s published figures are planning references, not guarantees for a particular network.
Which WatchGuard Firebox do I need?
Use the model ranges below as a first pass, then confirm the inspected throughput and connectivity the site actually needs. WatchGuard’s model pages describe the T25, T45 and T85 for 5, 20 and 50 users, respectively; its M-series comparison lists 75 users for the M290 and 250 for the M390. Those are vendor sizing guides, not assurances that every workload at that headcount will fit.

Throughput and user figures are WatchGuard comparison-page specifications; the comparison page is undated and was accessed in 2026. WatchGuard says rates are measured across multiple flows and ports and vary with environment and configuration. UTM and HTTPS full-scan figures are more relevant than a basic firewall rate when those inspection services will be enabled. VPN UDP results use 1518-byte packets; IMIX is a different packet mix, so compare like with like rather than treating either figure as a universal real-world rate. Remote office or virtual office: T25
WatchGuard positions the T25 for a few users and straightforward networking, including a home or remote virtual office. Its vendor-published figures are 403 Mbps UTM full-scan, 216 Mbps HTTPS full-scan, and 1.02 Gbps VPN with UDP 1518-byte packets or 300 Mbps VPN IMIX. It supports 10 mobile-user VPN tunnels and 10 branch-office VPN tunnels. T25 wireless models use Wi-Fi 6. Consider it when the small site’s inspected traffic and concurrent VPN demand fit those requirements, rather than choosing it just because the headcount is low.

Small-to-midsize branch: T45
The T45 is WatchGuard’s comparison point for about 20 users. Its listed rates are 557 Mbps UTM full-scan, 301 Mbps HTTPS full-scan, 1.58 Gbps VPN using UDP 1518-byte packets, and 460 Mbps VPN IMIX. It supports 30 mobile-user and 30 branch-office VPN tunnels. This is a sensible step up when the T25’s inspection capacity, tunnel allowance or site connectivity is too limited.
Check the exact T45 variant: WatchGuard lists Wi-Fi 6 options, PoE+ on specified variants, and a T45-CW with built-in 5G cellular. These are not interchangeable assumptions about every T45 listing; match the suffix and hardware features on the quote to the installation plan.

Busy or larger branch: T85
WatchGuard positions the T85 for up to 50 employees or a busy, high-traffic site. Its comparison lists 943 Mbps UTM full-scan, 576 Mbps HTTPS full-scan, 2.04 Gbps VPN with UDP 1518-byte packets, and 680 Mbps VPN IMIX, plus 60 mobile-user and 60 branch-office VPN tunnels. It has eight 1 Gb interfaces, with optional SFP+ or 4G/LTE expansion options listed by WatchGuard. Consider it when inspected traffic, VPN use or interface needs exceed what a smaller tabletop appliance suits.
Rackmount and higher-capacity deployments: M290 or M390
For rackmount deployments, WatchGuard lists the M290 for 75 users and the M390 for 250. The comparison gives UTM full-scan rates of 1.18 Gbps and 2.4 Gbps, VPN rates of 2.4 Gbps and 5.2 Gbps using UDP 1518-byte packets, and mobile VPN limits of 75 and 250, respectively. These figures establish a higher-capacity comparison axis, not a complete recommendation: confirm the branch’s inspected traffic, site-to-site tunnels, interfaces and security services before selecting a rackmount model.

How should you size throughput and VPN capacity?
Use inspected throughput, not just the headline rate
Security inspection changes the useful comparison. A firewall’s headline throughput may not represent the rate available with full scanning or HTTPS inspection enabled. For the T25, T45 and T85, WatchGuard publishes both UTM full-scan and HTTPS full-scan figures; use the relevant figure for the services you intend to run. Also consider traffic peaks, simultaneous users and demanding applications. Published test specifications do not predict a specific deployment’s performance.
Separate remote-user VPNs from branch-to-branch VPNs
Mobile VPN tunnel limits describe remote users connecting individually; branch-office tunnel limits describe site-to-site connections. The T25, T45 and T85 comparisons list both categories separately. A business with many remote staff should check the mobile figure, while a multi-branch network should check branch-office capacity. A tunnel count does not tell you how much traffic those tunnels can carry: consider both the limit and VPN throughput.

- Trade an earlier-generation WatchGuard appliance and move up to a new WatchGuard solution. The program includes options to trade up to a physical or virtual appliance. The owner must retire an earlier generation WatchGuard appliance to activate Trade Up products. By retiring a WatchGuard product, it no longer appears amongst your managed products; it is incapable of upgrades, add-on activation, or software downloads, and ownership cannot be transferred.

Account for packet mix and concurrent demand
WatchGuard reports VPN throughput using both UDP packets of 1518 bytes and IMIX. The T25, for example, is listed at 1.02 Gbps for the larger UDP packets and 300 Mbps for IMIX; the results use different traffic patterns and should not be read as contradictory promises. Your actual result depends on traffic mix, enabled services, configuration and concurrent VPN use.
Which interfaces and model variant fit the site?
Check the physical design as carefully as the performance figures. A branch may need more LAN ports, wireless access, power over Ethernet, cellular backup or an optical expansion option. The T45’s wireless, PoE+ and 5G features depend on variant; the T85 comparison lists optional SFP+ or 4G/LTE expansion. Confirm the exact model identifier and included hardware on the seller’s quote, and make sure it matches the cabling, uplink and failover plan.

Does the Firebox support your remote-access method?
Remote access is not one feature with one universal requirement. Client VPN, site-to-site VPN and clientless browser access serve different use cases, and model, license and Fireware version can affect availability.
Access Portal for browser-based access
WatchGuard describes Access Portal as a clientless VPN for web applications, RDP and SSH sessions, and internal applications, accessed through a browser rather than a VPN client. Its documentation lists the T45 and T85 as supported with Standard Support, Basic Security Suite or Total Security Suite. Connections must use TLS 1.2 or higher. Verify the exact model, Fireware release and license before assuming the feature is available or included. WatchGuard Access Portal documentation
Check the Fireware version and licensing terms
WatchGuard’s Fireware v12.12 release notes list the T25, T45, T85, M290 and M390 among supported device models. That is a version-specific statement, not a guarantee about later releases, every feature, or current support terms. Check the release notes for the Fireware version you plan to use and the current licensing guide for the exact appliance and feature requirements. What should you verify before buying?
- Hardware variant: Confirm suffix, wireless, PoE+, cellular or expansion hardware rather than assuming a feature applies across a model family.
- License and support term: Check whether the quoted appliance includes the support and security-suite coverage your deployment needs, and for how long. Hardware price alone does not establish the total cost.
- Seller and regional availability: Verify current stock and authorized-seller status in your region. No general stock, seller authorization or bundled-term assumption applies to every listing.
- Lifecycle: Confirm that the precise model remains supported and that software, licensing and replacement options meet your expected service life.
- Legacy listings: WatchGuard labels T50/T50-W and T70 as no longer being sold and present for comparison purposes only. Do not treat their presence in comparison material or search results as a current recommendation; for existing or used equipment, establish lifecycle, software support, licensing and replacement availability separately.
