Choose a Gemini API managed agent when you are building an application and need a configured runtime that brings together instructions and capabilities such as tools, files, skills, or data sources. This is a developer configuration choice, not simply another name for a reusable instruction package. How portable are skills between assistants?

A shared folder convention does not guarantee identical behavior. Before relying on a skill across hosts, check each product’s supported format, discovery and activation behavior, scripts or dependencies, and tool names. Keep host-specific configuration where the assistants differ.

Pair reusable instructions with current documentation when needed
A skill can describe how an assistant should work; it does not by itself guarantee access to the latest API reference. Google recommends pairing Gemini API Skills with Gemini Docs MCP when current Gemini API documentation is important.
