It combines remastered versions of Warcraft I and Warcraft II, Warcraft III: Reforged, and the original versions of Warcraft I and Warcraft II, giving a new player the widest view of the series in one purchase. Choose Warcraft III: Reforged by itself if you want one focused strategy game. Choose World of Warcraft access if you specifically want the persistent massively multiplayer online game, and choose the Warcraft Forever Collection if you want World of Warcraft: Forever upgrade benefits bundled with Warcraft III content.
The best first purchase depends on the Warcraft experience you want
“Warcraft” now covers two very different kinds of games. The first is the classic real-time-strategy (RTS) series: campaigns built around missions, base construction, resource gathering and tactical battles. The second is World of Warcraft, a persistent online role-playing game that you enter through a subscription or Game Time.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Those formats are not interchangeable. The RTS games provide the historical story foundation in a sequence from Warcraft I through Warcraft III. World of Warcraft is an ongoing online world rather than a short campaign collection. Decide which structure you want before looking at editions.

| The complete classic RTS path | Warcraft Remastered Battle Chest | Includes remastered Warcraft I and II, Warcraft III: Reforged, plus the original Warcraft I and II releases. |
| One self-contained RTS | Warcraft III: Reforged | Starts with the most modernized entry in the classic trilogy and avoids buying games you may not play. |
| The persistent online game | World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time | These provide access to World of Warcraft, including World of Warcraft: Forever when it launches. |
| WoW: Forever benefits plus Warcraft III | Warcraft Forever Collection | Bundles the Skyborne Epic Pack, Warcraft III: Reforged and the Forsaken Kingdom campaign. |
| A physical keepsake | Warcraft Forever Collector’s Edition | A physical collector set whose digital code unlocks the Warcraft Forever Collection. |
There is no universal “best” Warcraft edition. The Battle Chest is the strongest default recommendation for a first-time classic-story player; the subscription route is the correct answer for someone who already knows they want an MMO.

What comes in the Warcraft Remastered Battle Chest?
Blizzard’s Battle.net listing names five products in the Warcraft Remastered Battle Chest:
- Warcraft I: Remastered
- Warcraft II: Remastered
- Warcraft III: Reforged
- Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, the original Warcraft I release
- Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition, the original Warcraft II release
The package is valuable because it covers both the remastered presentation and the original versions. You can begin with the updated releases, then compare them with the older editions if you are interested in how the games originally looked and played. It also lets you follow the strategy series in order instead of starting in the middle.
Why it is the best classic-story entry point
Warcraft I establishes the conflict between the human kingdoms and the orcs. Warcraft II expands the setting, factions and campaign structure. Warcraft III develops the characters and events that lead directly into the world later explored by World of Warcraft. Playing all three gives you context that is missing when you jump straight to the MMO.

What the Battle Chest does not provide
It is not a World of Warcraft subscription and does not provide access to World of Warcraft: Forever. It is also a digital strategy package, not the physical collector set described below. Buy it for the classic RTS catalog, not as a substitute for the MMO.

When Warcraft III: Reforged alone makes more sense
Choose Warcraft III: Reforged by itself when you want one focused RTS and do not need the earlier campaigns immediately. It is the shortest path to Warcraft’s modernized third strategy entry, with campaign, skirmish and multiplayer modes associated with Warcraft III rather than a three-game historical bundle.
The Battle.net product description says Reforged received a 2.0 patch with updated Classic HD assets and improved Reforged environment visuals. That makes the standalone purchase more appropriate for players who care about Warcraft III’s presentation and systems but are not yet committed to replaying Warcraft I and II.
Pick Reforged first if these statements describe you
- You want a single game that can be installed and played without working through two earlier titles.
- You are primarily interested in Warcraft III’s campaign, custom-map heritage or multiplayer rather than the complete historical sequence.
- You would rather spend once on a focused entry and add the earlier games later if the setting interests you.
Start with the Battle Chest instead if you know that campaign chronology matters or you want both remastered and original versions of Warcraft I and II. Buying Reforged first is not a cheaper way to obtain the entire classic set; it is a narrower choice.
World of Warcraft access and the November 2026 Forever launch
World of Warcraft uses a different access model. Blizzard states that World of Warcraft: Forever access is included with a World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time. You therefore need an active subscription or Game Time rather than the Battle Chest to enter the MMO.
Blizzard’s current announcement gives World of Warcraft: Forever a global launch time of November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST. That is the announced worldwide launch time; convert it to your local time before planning to play. Access after any included period continues to depend on an active subscription or additional Game Time.

What the subscription route is for
Choose ordinary World of Warcraft access when your priority is playing the online game itself. This route avoids paying for RTS products you may never install and keeps your spending aligned with recurring MMO access. It is also the baseline requirement for WoW: Forever, regardless of whether you purchase an optional upgrade pack.

What the Warcraft Forever Collection adds
The Warcraft Forever Collection is the crossover option for readers who want the new WoW: Forever benefits and Warcraft III material in one bundle. Blizzard lists these components:
- The Skyborne Epic Pack for World of Warcraft: Forever
- Warcraft III: Reforged
- The Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom campaign
- 30 days of World of Warcraft Game Time beginning November 4, 2026
The included 30 days are temporary access beginning on the launch date. After that period, continued play requires a subscription or additional Game Time. The Collection is not a replacement for the Battle Chest: it contains Warcraft III content, not the remastered Warcraft I and Warcraft II games listed in the Battle Chest.
Limited availability and beta access
Blizzard says the Warcraft Forever Collection is available through January 11, 2027. Treat that as a stated end date for the limited-time bundle, not as a guarantee that the same contents or terms will remain afterward.

The announced WoW: Forever beta window runs from September 17 through October 21, 2026 PST. Blizzard includes beta access with the Skyborne Epic Pack and with the Warcraft Forever Collection. Beta access is therefore a time-limited testing opportunity before the November 4 launch, not permanent early ownership of the finished game.
Skyborne upgrade packs: who needs them?
Blizzard lists three optional WoW: Forever upgrade choices: the Skyborne Heroic Pack, the Skyborne Epic Pack and the limited-time Warcraft Forever Collection. The supplied announcement identifies the Epic Pack as including 30 days of World of Warcraft Game Time beginning November 4, 2026, and it grants beta access during the announced beta window.
If you only want World of Warcraft: Forever gameplay, start with the subscription or Game Time requirement. An upgrade pack is relevant when its additional items, beta access or included Game Time match what you want. The Collection is the only listed upgrade choice that also adds Warcraft III: Reforged and the Forsaken Kingdom campaign.
Because the supplied information does not enumerate every cosmetic or account benefit in the Heroic and Epic packs, do not assume that an upgrade includes a particular mount, service or bonus unless the current Battle.net purchase description names it.
Warcraft Forever Collector’s Edition
Blizzard describes the Collector’s Edition as a physical keepsake set. Its digital code unlocks the Warcraft Forever Collection, including the WoW: Forever Skyborne Epic Pack, Warcraft III: Reforged and the Forsaken Kingdom campaign.
This makes the Collector’s Edition a physical-collecting purchase first and a digital-content purchase second. The supplied announcement does not identify a verified retailer, regional stock, price or shipping date. If you are buying for the physical items, verify the seller, edition contents, platform code region and delivery terms before paying. If you only want the digital bundle, the digital Warcraft Forever Collection avoids the uncertainty of a physical shipment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Story order: where should a new player begin?
For the original Warcraft narrative
- Play Warcraft I: Remastered.
- Continue with Warcraft II: Remastered.
- Finish with Warcraft III: Reforged.
This order follows the progression of the classic RTS series. The original Warcraft I and Warcraft II versions are optional historical comparisons, not extra chapters required to understand the sequence.
For a single modern RTS experience
Start with Warcraft III: Reforged. You will encounter the later strategy-era setting without committing to two older games. If the campaign makes you want more background, add the Battle Chest later and play Warcraft I and II.
For World of Warcraft: Forever
Begin with a World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time. You do not need to purchase the Battle Chest first. Playing the RTS games beforehand can provide story context, but it is not an access prerequisite for the MMO.
Edition comparison: scope, payment and timing
| Edition or access method | Games or content | Payment model | Timing and limits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warcraft Remastered Battle Chest | Warcraft I: Remastered, Warcraft II: Remastered, Warcraft III: Reforged, original Warcraft I and original Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition | One-time Battle.net purchase; current price not stated | Immediate access to listed products after purchase | Players who want the complete classic RTS foundation |
| Warcraft III: Reforged | Warcraft III content with the 2.0 visual updates described by Blizzard | One-time Battle.net purchase; current price not stated | Immediate access after purchase | Players who want one focused RTS |
| World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time | World of Warcraft access, including WoW: Forever access when available | Recurring subscription or purchased Game Time | Forever launches November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST; continued play requires active access | Players whose priority is the MMO |
| Skyborne Epic Pack | WoW: Forever Epic upgrade benefits and 30 days of Game Time beginning November 4, 2026 | Optional upgrade plus the underlying access requirement | Beta access during September 17–October 21, 2026 PST; Game Time is limited to 30 days | Players who want upgrade benefits and pre-launch beta access |
| Warcraft Forever Collection | Skyborne Epic Pack, Warcraft III: Reforged and Forsaken Kingdom campaign | Limited-time bundle; continued MMO access after included time requires subscription or more Game Time | Includes 30 days of Game Time from November 4, 2026; listed through January 11, 2027; beta access included | Players who want both WoW: Forever and Warcraft III |
| Warcraft Forever Collector’s Edition | Physical keepsake set plus a digital code for the Warcraft Forever Collection | Physical edition; price and retailer availability not stated | Availability and shipping depend on the verified retailer and region | Collectors who want the physical set and digital crossover bundle |
A practical buying decision
- Choose your game type. Select RTS if you want campaigns and tactical base-building. Select MMO if you want a persistent online world, characters and ongoing access.
- Choose your story scope. Pick the Battle Chest for Warcraft I–III. Pick Reforged alone for Warcraft III only. Pick the Forever Collection for Warcraft III plus WoW: Forever upgrade content.
- Check the payment model. The Battle Chest and Reforged are one-time digital purchases. World of Warcraft requires a subscription or Game Time, and included Game Time in an upgrade expires after its stated period.
- Check the date. If you are buying for WoW: Forever, note the November 4, 2026 launch, the September 17–October 21 beta window and the January 11, 2027 end date listed for the Collection.
- Decide whether physical items matter. Choose the Collector’s Edition only if you want its physical keepsakes and can verify retailer and regional details.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying the Battle Chest expecting MMO access: it contains the classic RTS products, not a World of Warcraft subscription or WoW: Forever access.
- Assuming Reforged includes Warcraft I and II: Warcraft III: Reforged is the focused standalone option; the remastered first and second games are listed in the Battle Chest.
- Treating 30 days as permanent access: the Skyborne Epic Pack and Warcraft Forever Collection include 30 days of Game Time beginning November 4, 2026. Continued play afterward requires a subscription or additional Game Time.
- Missing the Collection deadline: Blizzard lists January 11, 2027, as the availability end date for the limited-time Warcraft Forever Collection.
- Confusing beta participation with launch ownership: beta access runs only during the announced September 17–October 21, 2026 PST window.
- Buying an unverified physical listing: the Collector’s Edition’s price, retailer and shipping details are not established here, so confirm those details before ordering.
Bottom line for each type of buyer
For most newcomers asking which Warcraft game to play first, the Warcraft Remastered Battle Chest is the clearest recommendation: it supplies the entire classic RTS arc and both remastered and original versions of the first two games. Buy Warcraft III: Reforged alone when you want one modernized strategy entry. Buy World of Warcraft access when the MMO is your actual goal. Choose the Warcraft Forever Collection when you want that MMO’s upgrade package together with Warcraft III, and choose the Collector’s Edition only when the physical keepsakes are part of the reason you are buying.
