Which VPS Should You Choose for Orca? Six Hosts Compared

Orca can run on a headless Linux VPS. Compare five providers from Cybernews’s 2026 list and choose capacity based on concurrent agents, builds and browser sessions.

Orca can run as a headless service on a Linux server, so a VPS can keep its remote development environment available when your laptop is offline. The right plan depends less on a universal minimum than on how many agents, worktrees, browser sessions, builds and tests you run at once. Orca publishes no fixed VPS minimums in the comparison discussed here; its sizing figures are Cybernews recommendations, not official requirements.

Cybernews’s comparison, last updated August 21, 2026, lists six providers and reports testing and rankings. The prices and judgments below are attributed to that article, not independent test results or live quotes. Confirm current plans and terms before ordering.

Can you host Orca on a VPS?

Yes. Orca’s project documentation describes running orca serve on a headless Linux machine, including an Ubuntu VPS or remote build box. Its guide says a desktop interface is not needed just to run the server. See the Orca project documentation for its headless-server instructions.

The documented deployment matrix identifies Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 and current Debian stable. For headless use, the guide calls for Xvfb and shows software rendering with LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 in its VPS service example. It recommends running the service as a dedicated, unprivileged user so Chromium’s sandbox is preserved. The advertised pairing address must be reachable by remote clients, and the selected port must be allowed through relevant firewalls.

These setup details establish that a Linux VPS is a supported kind of environment; they do not show that any one provider is faster or more reliable for Orca.

How much VPS capacity does Orca need?

There is no published fixed minimum in Cybernews’s 2026 comparison. The following are that publication’s suggested starting points and estimated monthly cost bands, not official Orca specifications or independent benchmarks.

Workload tier Suggested starting configuration Cybernews estimated monthly cost
Small 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 40–80 GB SSD $8–$25
Medium 4 vCPUs, 8–16 GB RAM, 80–160 GB SSD or NVMe $25–$65
Large 8+ vCPUs, 16–32 GB+ RAM, 160 GB+ NVMe $65 to over $200

Use the tiers as planning prompts, not guarantees. More concurrent agents and worktrees, browser sessions, larger repositories, dependency installation, and simultaneous builds or tests can all increase CPU, memory and disk demand. If work is intermittent, an option that can be resized or stopped may be more economical than paying continuously for peak capacity.

Six VPS providers in Cybernews’s comparison

The table preserves Cybernews’s 2026 order and positioning; it is not a new independent ranking. Starting prices are those reported by Cybernews in an article last updated August 21, 2026, and have not been verified as current quotes.

Provider Cybernews positioning Reported starting price
Kamatera Scalable configurations for variable or demanding parallel workloads; the comparison says configurations reach up to 104 vCPUs and 512 GB RAM. $14/month
DigitalOcean Developer-oriented Droplets, SSH key setup and API tooling. $24/month
Vultr GPU-backed options for local models or GPU-heavy workloads, alongside standard compute. $20/month
Hetzner Positioned for CPU-heavy compiling and testing; the comparison recommends its CPX22 plan. $23.59/month
OVHcloud Positioned for bandwidth-oriented remote work and large transfers; the article describes unmetered public bandwidth on cited plans. $8.50/month

Cybernews reports that its comparison weighs setup and remote connectivity at 30%, resources and multi-agent performance at 25%, customization and scalability at 25%, and pricing and value at 20%. Those percentages describe its methodology, not measured Orca performance figures available here.

All listed prices and plan characterizations are time-sensitive. Before choosing, confirm the plan name, region, included resources, bandwidth policy, billing term, promotional period and renewal price directly with the provider. Cybernews also reported a 14-day money-back guarantee for Hetzner and OVHcloud, and no such guarantee for Kamatera, DigitalOcean or Vultr; check the providers’ current refund terms because eligibility and conditions can change.

How to choose between a VPS, cloud instance and dedicated server

  • VPS: A practical fit for a persistent Orca environment when predictable recurring cost matters.
  • Cloud instance: Consider this when demand fluctuates and hourly billing or rapid resizing is useful; check whether stopping an instance also stops all charges, including storage or other attached resources.
  • Dedicated hosting: A possible fit for sustained, resource-intensive work that consistently needs substantial capacity, with the trade-off of more cost and management responsibility.

Compare the resource commitment, ability to scale, effective ongoing price and administration burden—not just the headline monthly rate.

What to check before deploying

  1. Estimate concurrency. Count agents, worktrees, browsers and build/test jobs likely to run together, then choose a starting tier with room for those simultaneous tasks.
  2. Confirm the Linux deployment path. Use Orca’s current headless-server guide to check operating-system compatibility and its Xvfb, software-rendering and service-user requirements.
  3. Plan remote access. Make sure the advertised pairing address can be reached from your client devices and that the chosen service port is permitted by the host and any intervening firewall.
  4. Compare full cost and control. Check recurring versus hourly billing, resize options, included storage and bandwidth, region, renewal rates and refund conditions before committing.
