After replacing a motherboard, first identify whether Windows is reporting a TPM problem, asking for a BitLocker recovery key, or showing an activation error. These are different issues with different fixes. Check the exact message and protect any encrypted data before changing TPM settings or clearing the security processor.
Identify which problem Windows is reporting
Record the full message or error code before changing settings. The screen or settings page usually points to the right troubleshooting path:

- TPM or security processor message: Open Windows Security > Device security > Security processor details or Security processor troubleshooting. This points to TPM detection, configuration, firmware, or state.
- BitLocker recovery screen at startup: Windows is asking to unlock an encrypted drive. A motherboard or firmware change can trigger this request; it is not, by itself, proof that the TPM needs to be cleared.
- Activation message: Open Settings > System > Activation. This is a Windows licensing issue, separate from TPM health.
Check whether the new motherboard has a TPM enabled
Windows 11 requires a compatible TPM 2.0. A new board may support one but have its firmware TPM disabled in UEFI, so a “compatible TPM cannot be found” message does not necessarily mean the function is absent. Microsoft explains how to check TPM availability and enable it in UEFI in its TPM 2.0 guidance.
- In Windows, open Windows Security > Device security > Security processor details and check the specification version. Alternatively, press Windows key + R, enter
tpm.msc, and review the TPM status and specification version. - If Windows does not detect a compatible TPM, restart into UEFI firmware settings. Look in the security, advanced, or trusted-computing sections for the TPM or security-device setting.
- Depending on the board, the setting may be called Security Device, Security Device Support, TPM State, AMD fTPM switch, AMD PSP fTPM, Intel PTT, or Intel Platform Trust Technology. Names and menu locations vary by motherboard and firmware.
- Use the documentation for the exact replacement motherboard model to enable its TPM feature. Save the change, restart, and check TPM status in Windows again.
Match the fix to the TPM message
Microsoft’s TPM troubleshooting guide maps common Windows Security messages to different actions. Do not clear the TPM just because an error appeared after the board change.

| Windows message or symptom | First action | Important dependency |
|---|---|---|
| “TPM is disabled and requires attention” | Check UEFI and enable TPM or security-device support for the board. | The setting name and location depend on the motherboard model. |
| “A firmware update is needed” or “Your TPM isn’t compatible with your firmware” | Check the manufacturer’s official firmware and support guidance for the exact board model. | Do not install firmware for a similar-looking model. |
| “TPM measured boot log is missing” or “There is a problem with your TPM. Try restarting your device.” | Restart Windows first. | If the message remains, follow Microsoft’s and the board maker’s guidance for the exact model. |
| “TPM storage is not available” or “Device health attestation isn’t available” | Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance points to clearing the TPM for these particular errors. | Clearing resets the security processor and can affect TPM-held credentials. Prepare first, especially on a managed device. |
Prepare before clearing the TPM
Clearing the TPM is not a general-purpose reset for every post-replacement error. It resets the security processor and can remove credentials stored there. Microsoft describes the procedure and precautions in its guidance on clearing the TPM.
- Back up important data and make sure you can access any required recovery information, including your BitLocker recovery key.
- Expect to reset Windows Hello sign-in configured through the TPM. A Hello PIN or biometric sign-in may stop working until it is set up again.
- Consider other credentials or services that rely on the TPM and be ready to reconfigure them.
- If the computer belongs to your workplace or school, contact IT before clearing the TPM. The organization may manage device security or recovery information.
After taking those precautions, use Microsoft’s instructions for the specific Windows TPM error rather than improvising a reset. Restart and recheck the status afterward. If the same error persists, give the motherboard maker the exact board model, firmware version, Windows message, and actions already tried; menu paths and firmware advice are manufacturer-specific.

If Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key
A motherboard or firmware change can alter the system’s security measurements and cause BitLocker to request recovery. This is a drive-unlocking step, not the same as fixing TPM detection or Windows activation. Microsoft explains where to find a BitLocker recovery key.
- Use the recovery screen’s key ID to identify the matching saved key if you have more than one.
- For a personal device, check the Microsoft account where the key was saved. For a work or school device, contact the organization’s administrator.
- Enter the matching 48-digit recovery key when prompted. Microsoft Support cannot retrieve or recreate a lost key.
If the encrypted data matters, do not format the drive or reinstall Windows just to get past the recovery prompt. Without the key, the encrypted data may remain inaccessible.

If Windows will not activate after the replacement
When the TPM is healthy but Windows reports that it is not activated, troubleshoot the license in Settings > System > Activation. Microsoft notes that a significant hardware change such as replacing the motherboard can prevent Windows from matching the device to its digital license. See its hardware-change reactivation guidance.
- For an eligible digital license linked to a Microsoft account, sign in to Windows with that same account.
- Go to Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot, select I changed hardware on this device recently, and choose the current device.
- Make sure the installed Windows edition, such as Home or Pro, matches the license. If you use a valid product key instead, enter it through Activation settings.
OEM-installed licenses and independently replaced motherboards can have different outcomes. If reactivation does not work, check with the computer or motherboard OEM and review the applicable license terms. Microsoft’s Windows activation guidance covers common activation issues.
