If you want to spend less time in selected iPhone apps, use Screen Time to set app limits or scheduled Downtime. Shortcuts can automate tasks and respond to supported events, but Apple’s documentation does not establish a Shortcut that locks you out of apps or enforces a Screen Time limit.
Set an app or category time allowance
On iPhone, open Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Add Limit. Choose a category, or expand it to select individual apps, then set the daily allowance. Apple’s support instructions also let you customize limits by day.

On iOS 27 and later, Apple’s current guide uses the labels Time Allowances and Schedules. The exact names and availability can vary with software version. Apple says the latest schedule and allowance features require iOS 27 or later across the relevant Apple devices; Family Sharing groups using them must also have all devices on the required current operating-system versions. Reaching a limit does not necessarily make an app inaccessible: Apple says Screen Time limits can be ignored by default. Treat an allowance as a boundary or prompt unless you have configured a control that blocks access.

Schedule Downtime when you want apps unavailable
Downtime sets a recurring period when most apps are unavailable. In Screen Time, configure the schedule for the days and times you want. Apple says a reminder appears five minutes before scheduled Downtime begins, and that reminder can be ignored.
To make scheduled Downtime block restricted apps, turn on Block at Downtime. Apps and contacts you have designated as allowed can remain available. For Apple’s setup details, see Set schedules with Screen Time on iPhone.

What a Shortcut can do—and what it cannot be assumed to do
Apple describes Shortcuts as a way to combine actions into multi-step tasks that interact with apps and device content. Personal automations can respond to supported triggers, including app events. Some automations can run automatically, while others require confirmation; individual actions can have their own requirements for automatic running.

For example, you could investigate whether a supported automation can prompt you when an app opens. Check the trigger and action options shown on your device before relying on them. Apple’s general documentation does not provide a verified action sequence for reducing screen time, and it does not establish that a Shortcut can impose or lock a Screen Time limit.

Bottom line for iOS 27
Set app allowances or Downtime in Screen Time for Apple-documented controls over app use. Enable Block at Downtime if your goal is to make restricted apps unavailable during scheduled periods. Use Shortcuts only as an optional aid, not as a substitute for Screen Time’s limits or blocking controls.
