To hide Discord’s preset list of flagged words on mobile, open User Settings > Privacy & Safety and switch on Enable language filter. The opt-in setting redacts detected words with asterisks in messages you receive. You cannot add your own words to this personal filter; blocking custom terms for a server is a separate AutoMod task.

Turn on Enable language filter.
To stop filtering, return to the same setting and turn it off. Discord says the feature is opt-in and can be enabled or disabled at any time. The instructions are documented for mobile, desktop and browser; the setting is described as applying across the devices where you use Discord. Discord Support: How To Enable Discord Language Filter (updated July 1, 2024).
What the filter changes—and what it does not
This is a personal visibility setting, not a server rule. It uses Discord’s preset list of commonly flagged words, covering categories such as insults and slurs, sexually explicit or sensitive content, and severe profanity. When it detects a listed term in a message you receive, it replaces the word with asterisks. The documented scope includes direct messages, group DMs, and servers where moderators have not enabled AutoMod.

You cannot add terms to the personal filter, and Discord does not provide a way to reveal an individual redacted word while leaving the filter on. To see filtered words, you must disable the setting. Because the list is preset, a term you want hidden may still appear if it is not included or is not detected; the feature is not a user-managed blocklist.
Discord says filtering happens locally on your device: “The filter works directly on your device, so your messages stay private and are not sent to Discord’s servers for filtering.”

Personal filtering or server AutoMod?
| Question | Personal Language Filter | Server AutoMod |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls it? | Each user controls what is filtered in their own Discord client. | Server moderators configure rules for the community. |
| What does it affect? | Messages the user receives within the documented scope. | Messages matching server rules can be blocked or flagged before they appear to the community. |
| Can you add custom words? | No. It uses Discord’s preset list. | Yes. Custom keyword rules can include terms and phrases, exemptions, and wildcard matching; Discord also documents regex for custom keyword rules. |
| Can the rules be changed on mobile? | The personal setting is available through mobile User Settings when the feature is available to the account. | Discord says AutoMod rule updates cannot currently be made on mobile; editing requires Manage Server or Administrator permission on desktop. |
AutoMod may block a flagged message, send a moderator alert, and, for custom keyword rules, apply timeouts. Those server controls do not change or customize the personal Language Filter. See Discord’s AutoMod FAQ (displayed updated June 15, 2026) and Filter Messages Using Regular Expressions (Regex) (published November 7, 2022).

No “Enable language filter” option: Discord describes Language Filter as an experiment that is not available to everyone. Its support page does not promise a universal rollout date, explain account selection criteria, or give a guaranteed workaround, so the toggle may simply not be available to your account.
