On Vivaldi desktop, first enable Block Trackers in Settings > Privacy and Security > Tracker and Ad Blocking. Add full ad blocking only where ads are intrusive, keep abusive-ad protection on, and adjust individual sites when something breaks. Treat blocking third-party cookies in all windows as a separate, optional step because it can disrupt sign-ins and embedded content.
Change these Vivaldi settings first
- Enable tracker blocking for all sites. In desktop Vivaldi, open Settings > Privacy and Security > Tracker and Ad Blocking and select Block Trackers. Vivaldi says this blocks known tracker URLs before requests are sent. Its help documentation recommends: “We recommend blocking trackers on all sites, but blocking ads only on sites where they are intrusive or distracting.” Read Vivaldi’s desktop tracker and ad-blocking guide.
- Choose where to block ads. The global options are No Blocking, Block Trackers, and Block Trackers and Ads. Full ad blocking adds the ad blocker to tracker blocking. If you want to support a publisher or a site’s ads are unobtrusive, keep tracker blocking and use a per-site setting rather than turning off protection everywhere.
- Leave abusive-ad protection enabled. Vivaldi says this feature is on by default and blocks ads on sites with abusive practices, including misleading ads and pop-ups that prevent you from leaving. Its help page strongly advises keeping it enabled. Vivaldi’s abusive-ad blocker documentation.
Set blocking globally or site by site
Use the global setting to establish your baseline, then make exceptions only for sites where you need them. To change one site, click the Content Blocker button on the left side of the address field and choose a less restrictive level. You can also manage exceptions at Settings > Privacy and Security > Tracker and Ad Blocking > Exceptions. Reload the page after changing the setting.

Vivaldi notes that a page may depend on elements blocked by its tracker or ad blocker. If a video, sign-in, or other feature stops working, lower blocking for that site first instead of disabling it globally. Decide whether to block third-party cookies everywhere
Vivaldi blocks third-party cookies by default in Private Windows, not in all regular windows. To block them across all windows on desktop, open Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies > Third-Party Cookies > Block All. This is a deliberate tightening step, not a necessary prerequisite for tracker blocking.

Vivaldi warns that blocking third-party cookies can stop sites that rely on content served from multiple domains from working properly. Embedded videos, comment systems, and sign-in flows are examples of features to check if you enable it. If one fails, allow the necessary site or restore the previous cookie choice. Hide cookie notices only if you accept occasional page issues
Under Settings > Privacy and Security > Tracker and Ad Blocking > Manage Sources, Vivaldi offers the EasyList Cookie List and I don’t care about cookies sources. These lists hide many consent banners, but can interfere with page behavior. If a site looks wrong or stops working, disable the relevant source or reduce blocking for that site.
Optional privacy controls and what they do
- Ask Websites Not to Track Me: sends a request that websites may ignore; it is a preference signal, not enforced protection.
- Block Hyperlink Audit Tracking: can prevent some links from sending a ping to the site owner when clicked. Vivaldi warns that some websites may break, so treat it as an optional setting to test.
- WebRTC IP handling: Vivaldi says broadcasting is enabled by default. Disabling broadcast may be useful if you use a VPN and want to reduce the chance that a site learns your IP through WebRTC, but it can affect site functionality and does not make browsing anonymous.
- Search suggestions: disabled by default. If enabled, text you type is sent to the selected search engine even when you do not submit it. Leave suggestions off to minimize that data sharing, or enable them with a search engine you trust.
- Browsing history: Vivaldi documents retention choices from session-only through forever; three months is the default. Choose a shorter period if you prefer less saved local history, or a longer one for convenience.
- DNS and Safe Browsing: Vivaldi documents Google DNS for resolving navigation errors and Google Safe Browsing checks for suspected phishing and malware. These are security-related settings, not substitutes for tracker blocking. Vivaldi describes its Safe Browsing approach as using an approximation file rather than sending the provider a list of sites you visit; that description should not be read as a general privacy guarantee.

What Private Windows do—and do not—protect
Private Windows use a separate cookie store and cache from regular browsing, do not save visited-address history, and share a session with one another until all Private Windows close. They do not encrypt or otherwise modify your connection. Private browsing therefore limits some traces saved locally after the session; it does not, by itself, hide browsing from websites, network operators, or your internet provider. Vivaldi explains the behavior in its Private Windows documentation.
