For indie games, itch.io is a useful alternative, but DRM-free status depends on the creator’s files. Epic Games Store can launch some installed single-player games offline, but eligibility varies and that feature is not a DRM-free guarantee. In every case, check the individual game’s requirements: offline access to single-player content does not make multiplayer or other connected services work without a connection.

Which PC game store is best for playing offline?
For the strongest documented offline-first option among these stores, choose GOG. Its developer documentation says releases must work without Galaxy and without an internet connection; the store also offers installers you can download and keep. GOG’s developer policy describes the requirement, while its introduction explains that Galaxy is optional.

itch.io is a good option when a creator offers a downloadable, DRM-free build. The platform says DRM-free uploads are preferred, not required, so verify the project page and the files before buying. Epic Games Store is a conditional choice: its launcher has an Offline Mode for supported single-player games that are already installed, but not every game qualifies.

What “DRM-free” and “offline” actually mean
DRM-free generally means the game does not rely on copy protection or an online check to authorize play. Offline play is a separate question: a game may launch without internet while still requiring an account, launcher, or connection for some features. A storefront’s policy also does not establish that every operating system, hardware setup, or game build will work for every buyer.
GOG’s distribution terms define DRM-free games as having no DRM, copy protection, or online-connection requirement, except for multiplayer games or multiplayer elements; they say single-player content is available offline unless the distribution form says otherwise. GOG: the best documented choice for offline-first games
GOG’s policy is unusually direct: games released there should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, whether Galaxy is installed, or whether an internet connection is available. GOG’s quality-assurance guidance also says submitted games are checked for DRM and must be playable offline and without Galaxy. GOG’s QA documentation describes those checks.
Install and keep a local copy
GOG lets users download offline installers from its website, so you can save the installation files rather than relying on a launcher to install the game later. GOG’s offline-installer documentation says installers are generated after a build reaches the Master branch; updates made after launch can take several hours to appear. If you want a local backup, keep the downloaded installers on storage you control. That preserves the files, but does not guarantee future compatibility with your hardware or operating system.

Know what still needs a connection
Offline play does not include services that inherently depend on a network. GOG specifically distinguishes multiplayer, retrieving friends, and leaderboards from the rest of the game; those features may be unavailable offline even when single-player play is unaffected. itch.io: check the creator’s files and instructions
itch.io says it does not modify uploaded game files, but it does not require every creator to provide a DRM-free version. Its creator FAQ says users can download games as uploaded, while its quality guidance says DRM-free uploads are preferred rather than compulsory. itch.io Creator FAQ and creator quality guidelines explain the distinction.

Before buying, inspect the project page for the exact downloadable build, its installation instructions, and any account, launcher, or connection requirement. itch.io purchase pages provide access to the files uploaded for a project. Some creators also offer external keys, such as Steam keys; these are separate from direct downloads and may not be included in every bundle or remain available. Using the itch.io app offline
The app can be used offline after you have logged in successfully once. If the connection drops while the app is running, it can continue launching games and showing collections and the local library. This describes the app’s behavior, not a guarantee that every game it launches is itself DRM-free or offline-capable. Read itch.io’s offline app guide.

Epic Games Store: use Offline Mode only for eligible games
Epic’s launcher Offline Mode allows supported single-player games to run without an internet connection, but the game must already be installed and not all games support the feature. Epic also warns that multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and other online services may not be available. Epic’s Offline Mode support article has the current qualifications.
That makes Epic a game-by-game option rather than a DRM-free storefront recommendation. Before relying on a title offline, confirm it supports Offline Mode and install it while you have a connection. If you need an installer you can keep and use independently of a launcher, GOG’s documented offline installers are a better fit.

Before you buy for a long period without internet
- Check the game page and requirements. Look for account, launcher, anti-cheat, multiplayer, and persistent-connection requirements, as well as operating-system and hardware compatibility.
- Prefer a direct installer or download. A launcher’s ability to run offline does not necessarily give you a standalone installer for future use.
- Install and test before going offline. This is especially important for launcher-dependent or eligibility-based modes. Do not assume first-time setup, updates, or account authentication will be possible without a connection.
- Keep a local backup if the store provides one. Save installer files somewhere you control; storage alone cannot guarantee a game will remain compatible or supported indefinitely.
