Yes. Argentina generally allows its nationals to acquire another nationality without automatically losing Argentine nationality. But keeping two nationalities does not mean you can use either passport interchangeably at Argentina’s border: the entry and exit rules depend on the other country, where you live, and your circumstances. Argentina’s Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (DNM) sets out those procedures in its dual-nationality guidance.
Does acquiring another citizenship make you lose Argentine nationality?
Generally, no. The DNM’s 1984 migration instructions state: “los argentinos no pierden su nacionalidad por haberse naturalizado en un país extranjero” (“Argentines do not lose their nationality by having naturalized in a foreign country”). That historical statement addresses retention of Argentine nationality; it should not be confused with the separate question of which document to present when entering or leaving Argentina. The official materials cited here do not say that acquiring Argentine nationality automatically cancels a person’s existing foreign passport, or that acquiring another nationality cancels an Argentine passport. A passport’s validity is distinct from how Argentine migration authorities handle it at the border.

The DNM organizes its rules by the nationality acquired, residence, and the person’s situation—not by a universal rule that every dual national must always use one passport. Its published procedures distinguish Argentines naturalized in countries with a dual-nationality agreement from those naturalized in countries without one.

If the other country has an agreement with Argentina
The DNM’s listed agreement countries are Spain, Italy, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, and Sweden. The United States is listed only for naturalizations through 20 October 1981. Check the DNM’s current list and the category that applies to your case before travel.
For this group, entry and exit procedures vary with residence. The DNM says Argentine residents may depart using the acquired nationality’s valid travel document together with Argentine identity documentation; re-entry calls for a valid Argentine travel document. The guidance also describes annotations that may be made on the foreign travel document. These are operational border instructions, not a statement that the foreign passport has ceased to be valid under the issuing country’s law.

If the other country has no agreement with Argentina
The DNM says Argentines naturalized in a country without an agreement are treated as Argentines for the relevant migration purposes. It specifies Argentine-document requirements for departure and re-entry, while allowing use of the foreign document in limited circumstances described on its page. Do not assume those exceptions apply to every trip or every dual national.

The DNM guidance differentiates people living abroad from residents of Argentina. It also says that declaring an intention to move permanently to Argentina can affect whether a person is treated as Argentine and which documents are required for departure. Since these details turn on individual circumstances, confirm your category and required documents with DNM or an Argentine consulate before travel.

What the rules mean for an existing passport
- Acquiring another nationality: does not, by itself, make an Argentine lose Argentine nationality, according to the DNM’s 1984 instructions.
- Holding a passport: is not the same as having permission to use it as your only document for every Argentine border crossing.
- Border procedure: depends on the agreement category, residence, and potentially your declared intention to reside permanently in Argentina. Follow the applicable DNM instructions for both entry and exit.
The 1984 instructions also say migration authorities may infer that an Argentine acquired another nationality from a foreign passport or identity document showing that nationality. This is an evidentiary point in migration proceedings, not a declaration that Argentine nationality has been forfeited.

Argentina’s current consolidated Ley 346 identifies categories of Argentines, including people born in Argentina subject to the law’s stated exception for children of diplomats, and children of native-born Argentines born abroad who opt for Argentine nationality. The law also contains naturalization provisions. These rules describe routes to nationality; they do not make the naturalization process a condition for an existing Argentine national to retain nationality after acquiring another one.

For context, the consolidated law reflects Decreto 366/2025. Under the updated text, naturalization generally requires an adult to have resided continuously and legally in Argentina for the two years before applying, without leaving during that period, or to establish a qualifying relevant investment. DNM handles applications and coordinates with RENAPER for the Argentine identity document. Those are current naturalization details, not a rule about losing nationality after naturalizing elsewhere.
