Steam and GOG are the relevant current digital PC storefront choices for the original game. The Unofficial Patch is a separate layer that can be used with either one; buying the GOG edition does not by itself mean you have selected Basic or Plus.

Steam lists Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines as developed by Troika Games, published by Activision and released on 16 November 2004. The Unofficial Patch is a separate decision
The patch author’s documentation describes the Unofficial Patch as cumulative: it includes all previous releases and the official Troika Games patch 1.2. It works with retail and downloadable editions of any kind, which covers both Steam and GOG installations. The current listing identifies version 12.0, last updated 15 October 2026; a community announcement dated 29 September 2026 announced that release. Because patch builds can change, check the listing’s current version before installing.

How to interpret Steam’s old requirements
Steam’s Windows 98/ME/2000/XP requirements are historical storefront metadata from a 2004 release. They describe the environment the original game targeted, not a guarantee that an unmodified install will behave perfectly on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not treat that page as evidence that vanilla mode is modern-ready.
What GOG’s compatibility claim means

That makes GOG the lower-burden starting point for a current Windows machine. The patch is installed in its own subfolder, so other modifications can run alongside it. Its loader can also start a vanilla-style executable when you want to compare an unpatched presentation. “Basic” is not an inferior version; it is the conservative choice. “Plus” is not simply a newer bug-fix level; it deliberately broadens the game.

Recommendation for a first run
Use Basic. You get the cumulative fixes, including official patch 1.2, while limiting restored material and design changes. Choose Plus only when the appeal of cut-content restoration and extra tweaks outweighs the value of a near-original experience.
Installing the patch without losing control
Steam: clean install followed by a selected patch mode
- Install the game through Steam and let the first installation complete before adding modifications.
- Download the current Unofficial Patch release from its official listing. Select Basic for a conservative first run or Plus for restored and expanded content.
- Run the patch installer and point it at the Bloodlines installation directory. The installer places the patched files in the
Unofficial_Patchsubfolder rather than overwriting the original executable. - In Steam, open the game’s Properties window and locate the launch-options field. Add
-game Unofficial_Patchso Steam starts the patched subfolder. - Launch the game once, confirm that the patch’s loader or startup information appears, then begin a new game.
The documented Steam launch option is specifically -game Unofficial_Patch. If you remove it, Steam starts the base game instead; keep the option when you want the patched mode.
GOG: use the advertised installer, then select the patch
- Install the GOG edition through the GOG client or download the advertised offline installer and install from that file.
- Download the same current Unofficial Patch release and choose Basic or Plus.
- Target the installed Bloodlines directory. The patch’s separate subfolder keeps the original files available.
- Use the patch loader or the GOG shortcut it creates to start the selected mode. GOG’s launcher workflow is different from Steam’s, so do not copy Steam’s launch-option step blindly.
- Start a new game after patching.
GOG’s built-in technical fixes and the Unofficial Patch solve different problems. The former are part of the storefront distribution; the latter is an optional cumulative community patch with Basic and Plus modes.

Save files, patch changes and the new-game rule
Do not switch between Basic, Plus and vanilla in the middle of a campaign and expect existing saves to remain valid. The readme explicitly warns that you must begin a new game after patching. When the patch detects the change, old saves are moved to save/incompatible.

Before changing modes, finish the current run or copy the entire save directory somewhere safe. Then choose the desired mode, launch it, and create a new character. Keeping a backup lets you return to the old run with the same patch state instead of trying to force an incompatible save into a different content layout.
When vanilla still makes sense
A completely untouched install is reasonable for archival purposes, for testing the original release or for comparing changes introduced by the patch. The loader can start a vanilla-style executable, and a clean Steam installation gives you an unmodified baseline. The cost is practical: the game was released in 2004, and Steam’s listed operating systems stop at Windows XP. Modern compatibility is therefore less certain than with the GOG distribution or a patched installation.
Vanilla also means you forgo the cumulative fixes in the Unofficial Patch, including the official 1.2 fixes bundled by that project. It is a deliberate preservation choice, not the recommended default for a first playthrough on Windows 10 or 11.
Decision guide
Choose GOG plus Basic when
- You are installing on Windows 10 or Windows 11 and want the fewest compatibility decisions.
- You value an offline installer that can be stored independently of a launcher.
- This is your first playthrough and you want fixes without a heavily expanded game.
Choose Steam plus Basic when
- Your games already live in Steam and a second storefront would add needless friction.
- You want a clean base install and explicit control over the patch files and launch option.
- You may want to compare patched and vanilla executables from the same installation.
Choose Plus on either storefront when
- You have finished the original-style route or specifically want restored cut material.
- You accept additional tweaks and a version that departs further from the 2004 release.
- You are prepared to begin a separate new game rather than reuse a Basic or vanilla save.
Choose vanilla when
- Preserving the unmodified release is more important than modern convenience.
- You understand that the original operating-system requirements do not assure Windows 10/11 behavior.
Costs, availability and version checking
The evidence does not establish a fixed price, discount or universal regional availability for either storefront. Those values change by country and promotion, so check the live Steam or GOG listing before purchasing. The same caution applies to patch versions and launcher behavior. Troubleshooting the common failure points
The game starts unpatched on Steam
Confirm that Steam’s launch options contain exactly -game Unofficial_Patch, including the hyphen and the underscore, and that the patch was installed inside the Bloodlines directory. Remove conflicting launch options, start the game again and check the patch loader’s startup information.
A save will not load after changing modes
This is expected when the save belongs to another patch state. Look in save/incompatible, restore the matching patch mode if you want to continue that campaign, or keep the backup and begin a new game in the new mode.
You want Plus content but selected Basic
Do not overwrite an active campaign. Back up the save directory, change the patch mode, and start a new game. Basic and Plus are separate content choices, not a toggle that can safely be changed for an existing character.
Vanilla behaves poorly on a current Windows release
Use the GOG distribution’s advertised compatibility-oriented build or install the Unofficial Patch in Basic mode. If archival comparison is important, retain the vanilla executable and its saves separately rather than making it your only installation.
