Choose Ocarina of Time 3D if you have access to a Nintendo 3DS copy and want the smoothest, most convenient version with substantial extra content. Choose the Nintendo 64 original for its original audiovisual style, controller feel, and historical importance. Choose the Nintendo Switch 2 remake if current hardware, reworked graphics, a refreshed soundtrack, and modernised gameplay are your priorities.
All three versions tell the same landmark Zelda adventure, but they are aimed at different kinds of players. The 3DS edition is a remake with documented interface and challenge improvements; the Switch 2 edition is a newer reimagining whose full feature set is still defined by Nintendo’s current listing; and the N64 release remains the reference point for the game’s original presentation.

At a glance: which edition fits you?
| Version | Best for | Defining advantages | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 original | Players who value preservation and historical context | Original visuals, sound, pacing, and N64 controller context | Older hardware and interface conventions |
| Ocarina of Time 3D (Nintendo 3DS) | Most first-time players and people who want convenience | Graphical overhaul, touch inventory, gyro aiming, stereoscopic 3D, Master Quest, and Boss Challenge | Requires a 3DS system and a copy after the 3DS eShop closure |
| Switch 2 remake | Players who want a current-platform presentation | Reimagined visuals, refreshed soundtrack, modernised gameplay, HDR and VRR support | Nintendo’s listing does not yet establish every mode, control detail, or a physical edition |
If you are buying only one version and can use a Nintendo 3DS cartridge, Ocarina of Time 3D is the most balanced recommendation. It preserves the original game’s structure while removing much of its friction. The original is the right choice when authenticity matters more than convenience. The Switch 2 remake is the right choice when you would rather play on current Nintendo hardware and accept that its confirmed feature set differs from the documented 3DS additions.

What the Nintendo 64 original represents
The reference presentation
The 1998 Nintendo 64 release is the baseline against which the later editions are changes. Nintendo describes it as the game that introduced 3D visuals to the Zelda series, added a new combat system, and delivered a captivating story. Its polygonal environments, original character models, sound mix, camera behaviour, and menu design are the historical experience.

“Whether you’re experiencing it for the first time or not, the original Nintendo 64 version introduced 3D visuals to the series, with a new combat system, and a captivating story.” — Nintendo UK product description
That matters if you are studying how console 3D games were designed at the time, revisiting the game exactly as it was, or comparing later remakes scene by scene. The N64 controller’s analogue stick, trigger layout, and button assignments are part of that context. Some players also prefer the original’s audiovisual character, including its texture work and sound presentation, even when a later version is technically cleaner.
Where it can be played
Nintendo has listed Nintendo 64, Wii, and Wii U versions. The Wii U Virtual Console release used a PAL version optimised toward US gameplay and music speed, so it should not be treated as an identical technical presentation to every original-region cartridge. Availability of legacy downloads and hardware varies, and Nintendo’s modern storefront policy is not the same as it was during the Wii and Wii U eras.
What Ocarina of Time 3D changes
Remake features that improve everyday play
Nintendo released Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS on 17 June 2011. It keeps the original adventure and analogue movement while rebuilding the graphics and interface for the handheld. The system’s glasses-free stereoscopic 3D is optional, so you can play with the depth effect off if you prefer a flat image or find extended 3D uncomfortable.

The most practical upgrade is inventory management. Items can be assigned and viewed through the 3DS touch screen instead of requiring as many pauses and button combinations. First-person aiming can use the console’s gyro sensors: move the handheld to adjust your view when aiming a slingshot, bow, or similar item. The Circle Pad retains analogue movement rather than replacing it with a digital control scheme.
“The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D retains the analogue control of the original, using the Circle Pad on Nintendo 3DS, but greatly improves ease of use with a touch-based inventory system.” — Nintendo UK product description
Master Quest
The 3DS release includes Master Quest, an additional version of the adventure with redesigned puzzles and changed item and enemy locations. Its world is mirrored, and enemies are more difficult. This is not simply a harder setting applied to the original rooms: navigation, dungeon logic, and combat planning all change. If you have already completed the N64 game, Master Quest gives the 3DS edition meaningful replay value.

Boss Challenge lets you refight defeated bosses individually or take them on in a continuous sequence. It is useful for practicing attack patterns, revisiting favourite encounters, or testing a completed file without replaying the entire story. Nintendo’s 2011 announcement identifies both Master Quest and Boss Challenge as additions absent from the original.

What is confirmed about the Switch 2 remake
Presentation and platform
Nintendo’s current eShop listing describes the Switch 2 edition as “Featuring reimagined visuals, a refreshed soundtrack and modernised gameplay,” and presents it as a remake for a new era. It is listed for Nintendo Switch 2, supports one player, and has an estimated 27.0 GB install size. Compatible televisions can use HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR).
“Featuring reimagined visuals, a refreshed soundtrack and modernised gameplay, this classic quest has been remade for a whole new era.” — Nintendo publisher description
Those details establish a current-generation presentation and technical target, but they do not answer every comparison question. Nintendo’s listing does not confirm that Master Quest or Boss Challenge are included, so you should not buy the Switch 2 edition expecting those specific 3DS modes. It also does not establish a physical cartridge edition. Treat the listing as a digital-format specification unless a Nintendo product page or a retailer in your region confirms boxed availability.

The phrase “modernised gameplay” signals changes, but the listing does not provide a complete control map or a feature-by-feature account of how movement, aiming, menus, or combat differ from the N64 and 3DS versions. Do not assume that gyro aiming, a touch inventory, stereoscopic 3D, Master Quest, or Boss Challenge carries over. Wait for Nintendo’s final documentation if one of those features is decisive for you.

How the 3DS eShop closure changes access
Nintendo ended new purchases on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops on 27 March 2023. Previously purchased games and downloadable content remain redownloadable “for the foreseeable future,” but a new buyer cannot simply open the 3DS storefront and purchase Ocarina of Time 3D today.
If you want the 3DS edition
- Use an existing purchase: If the game is tied to an account that previously bought it, redownload access remains available for the foreseeable future under Nintendo’s support policy.
- Look for a physical Nintendo 3DS cartridge: Check the cartridge’s region, condition, authenticity, and whether the seller includes the case or manual. The eShop closure makes physical availability the practical route for many new buyers; it does not establish any particular current price or stock level.
- Confirm your hardware: You need a functioning Nintendo 3DS-family system that can read the cartridge. The game’s stereoscopic effect is optional, so a 2DS-family system can still play the software without the depth display.
- Expect no automatic access on Switch 2: A 3DS cartridge is not a Switch 2 game card. The two editions are separate releases.
If you want the original
You need either original Nintendo 64 hardware and a cartridge or an officially distributed re-release where Nintendo still provides access in your region. Check which regional version you are obtaining, especially if you are comparing timing or music speed with the PAL-optimised Wii U Virtual Console version.
If you want the Switch 2 remake
- Use Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, because the current listing identifies that platform rather than the original Switch.
- Allow for approximately 27.0 GB of storage, the estimated install size shown by Nintendo. Actual free-space requirements can change with updates, so leave additional capacity if possible.
- For HDR or VRR, use a television that supports the feature and configure the console and display accordingly. These options are conditional on compatible equipment.
- Check the listing or a region-specific retailer for format details before assuming a physical cartridge exists.
Which version should different players choose?
For a first playthrough
Pick Ocarina of Time 3D when you can obtain it. Touch inventory management reduces menu friction, gyro aiming makes first-person tools more immediate, and the visual overhaul is easier on modern eyes than the original N64 presentation. Master Quest and Boss Challenge also give you something substantial to do after the main quest.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor preservation and historical study
Pick the Nintendo 64 original. It is the version that established the game’s original visual language, soundtrack presentation, controller context, and technical compromises. If you are comparing the evolution of console 3D design, those compromises are evidence rather than defects to be removed.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
For a current living-room setup
Pick the Switch 2 remake if you already own Nintendo’s current hardware and value reworked visuals, a refreshed soundtrack, modernised gameplay, HDR, and VRR support. This is the most straightforward choice for someone who does not want to maintain legacy hardware or search for a 3DS cartridge.
For a replay specialist
Pick the 3DS edition if Master Quest and boss practice are central to your plans. Pick the N64 version if you want to compare routes, timing, or controller feel against the original. Choose Switch 2 only after confirming that its announced modes match your intended replay goals; Nintendo’s current listing does not promise the 3DS bonus content.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you already own a working Nintendo 3DS and can find a legitimate cartridge? If yes, the 3DS version offers the strongest convenience-to-content balance.
- Is preserving the original look, sound, and controller experience more important than interface improvements? Choose N64.
- Do you want to play on current hardware with a large modern display? Choose Switch 2.
- Are Master Quest and Boss Challenge essential? Choose 3DS unless Nintendo separately confirms them for Switch 2.
- Do HDR and VRR matter to your setup? Only the Switch 2 listing explicitly identifies support for those features.
- Are you relying on a digital 3DS purchase you never made? The eShop closure means you need an existing purchase or a physical cartridge instead.
Final recommendation
For most newcomers, Ocarina of Time 3D is the best all-round version: it keeps the original adventure, adds the most clearly documented quality-of-life improvements, and includes Master Quest and Boss Challenge. The N64 original remains the definitive preservation choice. The Switch 2 remake is the best fit for current-hardware players who prioritise its reimagined visuals, refreshed soundtrack, and modernised gameplay, but its confirmed feature list should not be expanded with unannounced 3DS modes.
