On Windows, open File > Account in Excel; select About Excel to see the full version number and whether the app is 32-bit or 64-bit. On Mac, choose Excel > About Excel from the macOS menu bar. The product name, version and build, and bitness are different details, so note the exact labels Excel displays.

What the version details mean
-
Product name or edition: Identifies the Excel or Office product you have, such as a Microsoft 365 product.
-
Version and build: Identifies the installed software release more precisely. If someone asks which version you have, share the displayed product name and the full version/build from About Excel.

Bitness: Indicates whether the Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit. Include this when troubleshooting compatibility or when support asks for it.
-
Installation type or license: Describes how Office is installed or licensed; it is not a substitute for the version and build.
Do not confuse the Excel app’s version with a workbook’s file version or a document’s cloud version history. Those describe the file, not the installed application.

If you use Excel for the web or on a phone
The steps above are documented for Windows and Mac desktop Excel. The Microsoft information cited here does not establish a matching in-app version-number path for Excel for the web, Android, or iPhone and iPad. If you need exact app-build details for a mobile installation, check the relevant app store listing or contact Microsoft Support; those routes may not provide the same Office version and build fields shown on desktop.
Microsoft confirms that Excel is available among its Microsoft 365 mobile apps, but that page does not explain how to view an installed app version number.

If you are checking because a feature is missing
First record the installed product and version/build, then consult Microsoft’s instructions for updating Microsoft 365 or Office for Windows if an update is appropriate. A version label by itself does not prove that every new Microsoft 365 feature is available: rollout timing can vary by update channel and platform. Microsoft says it does not publish an exact update day because timing can vary and multiple updates may occur in a month. See When do I get the newest features for Microsoft 365?
