It connects over USB or TCP/IP, requires no root access or Android-side app installation, and works with Android 5.0 (API 21) or later. The normal setup uses USB debugging.
What scrcpy does—and what you need
The official Genymobile scrcpy project describes scrcpy as a way to mirror Android video and audio on a computer and control the phone with a keyboard and mouse. The project supports Windows, Linux, and macOS. It does not require rooting the phone or installing an app on Android.

- A Windows PC and an Android phone running Android 5.0 (API 21) or later.
- For the wired setup below, a USB data cable that fits your phone’s charging port. The connector depends on the device; the project does not require a particular cable model.
- USB debugging enabled for the normal USB connection. The project notes that USB debugging is not required for OTG mode.
Download the Windows build from the project’s official Windows instructions, which link to the project’s releases. The project says its Genymobile GitHub repository is the only official source and warns against downloading files labeled scrcpy from unrelated sites. The repository currently labels the software v5.0; check the official page for the current release rather than relying on an old download guide.

- Enable Developer options on Android. The exact steps vary by phone. On many devices, open Settings, find About phone, and tap the Build number repeatedly until Developer options are enabled. Use the phone maker’s instructions if the menu names differ.
- Turn on USB debugging. Open Developer options in Settings and enable USB debugging. Confirm the prompt on the phone when you connect it to the PC.
- Connect the phone. Use a data-capable USB cable, unlock the phone, and approve the computer’s debugging authorization prompt if it appears.
- Start scrcpy on Windows. Extract the official Windows release and launch
scrcpy.exefrom the extracted folder. If the phone asks whether to allow USB debugging, approve it only if you trust the PC.
The phone’s screen should appear in a desktop window. Click or drag with the mouse, and type with the PC keyboard to interact with Android. The precise menu path for Developer options varies by manufacturer and Android version.

Choose USB or TCP/IP

The project documents both methods, but does not establish that one is always faster or more reliable. Choose based on whether you have a suitable cable and whether a wired or network connection better suits your setup.
Useful controls and features
Mouse and keyboard input lets you operate apps from the PC. The project also documents bidirectional copy and paste, recording, configurable image quality, and the ability to mirror while the phone screen is off. Feature availability varies by Android version and device: the project lists audio forwarding for Android 11 or later and camera mirroring for Android 12 or later.

Move files through the scrcpy window
According to the project’s documentation, dragging a non-APK file into the scrcpy window pushes it to /sdcard/Download/ by default. Dropping an APK installs it. The project notes that there may be no visible confirmation beyond a message in the console, so check the phone or console if you are unsure whether the operation completed.

Protect clipboard content
When you paste computer clipboard content onto Android, that content enters the Android clipboard. An Android app may be able to read clipboard contents, so do not use scrcpy to paste passwords, authentication codes, or other sensitive text.
If the screen is slow or controls do not work
- Phone not detected: Confirm that the cable supports data, unlock the phone, enable USB debugging, and accept its authorization prompt. Charging alone does not confirm a data connection.
- Keyboard or mouse input fails on some Xiaomi devices: The project says some devices may require a separate USB debugging (Security Settings) option in Developer options, followed by a reboot. This is a conditional device-specific fix, not a general requirement.
- Performance is poor: Reduce the mirrored resolution. The project gives
scrcpy -m1024as an example; this lowers the maximum dimension to 1024 pixels. - A feature is unavailable: Check its Android-version requirement. The project lists audio forwarding for Android 11 or later and camera mirroring for Android 12 or later; device support can also vary.
What performance to expect
The scrcpy project publishes specifications of 30–120 frames per second depending on the device, 1920×1080 resolution or above, 35–70 ms latency, and about one second to display the first image. These are project-published figures, not independent measurements or guarantees for every phone, PC, or connection.
