1. Check mute, system volume, and the affected app
- Use the keyboard’s volume controls or the Windows volume control to make sure sound is not muted and raise the system volume.
- Check the affected app’s own volume and mute controls. An app can be muted even while Windows volume is up.
- Open the Windows Volume Mixer and check that the app’s volume is not muted or set too low. Lenovo includes the Volume Mixer among its general audio checks. Lenovo’s Windows 10 audio troubleshooting guide
If only one app is silent, concentrate on that app’s audio controls; if all apps are silent, continue to the output-device checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Choose the intended Windows output
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the laptop speakers or other device you want to use.
- If more than one output is listed, check whether Windows has selected headphones, a monitor, a dock, or a Bluetooth device instead. If appropriate, set the intended playback device as the default.
- Play audio again to test the selection.
Windows can route sound to a different available device, so a correct volume setting alone does not guarantee that sound will come from the built-in speakers. Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guide

- IMPORTANT UPDATE NOTICE -- Based on extensive customer advises, we’ve rolled out two major upgrades to this desktop speaker. First, volume control buttons have been added. Second, we increased the product thickness for a larger sound cavity, bringing moderate improvements in sound quality and volume.
- HIGH-QUALITY SOUND -- This laptop speaker is equipped with Dual 3W High-Excursion Drivers & Passive Radiator, delivering louder sound, wider dynamic range, enhanced bass and reduced distortion.
- ONE CABLE FOR BOTH AUDIO & POWER -- No 3.5mm AUX jack needed. Just one USB cable delivers both audio signal and power for the computer speaker to cut down cable clutter.
- WIDE SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY -- This upgraded PC speaker works with Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS laptops & PCs, compatible with HP, Lenovo, ThinkPad, ASUS, Dell, Samsung, Acer, LG and more. Simply install the latest audio driver for smooth audio playback.
- PLUG-N-PLAY FOR SIMPLE SETUP -- For Windows PCs: Plug the speaker into your computer’s USB port, click the taskbar “Speaker” icon, then select “USB Speakers” as your playback device, and you’re ready.
3. Check the connection and test another output
- For wired headphones or external speakers, check that the plug is fully seated in the correct port, the cable is not visibly damaged, and powered speakers are switched on and unmuted.
- If you expect the built-in speakers to play, unplug any headphones and test again. Some speaker setups do not play through the speakers while headphones are connected.
- If you have a known-working, compatible pair of headphones, connect them and test sound. If the headphones work but the laptop speakers do not, that helps narrow the symptom to the speaker output path; it does not by itself prove which component has failed.
Microsoft recommends checking speaker and headphone connections when no sound plays. Microsoft: no sound from speakers or headphones
4. Turn off enhancements and run the Windows troubleshooter
- In Settings > System > Sound, select the output device you are testing. If an Audio enhancements setting is available, turn it off and test again.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter. Depending on your Windows version, start it through the Get Help app or the available troubleshooting options in Settings, then follow its prompts.

6. Update or reinstall the Lenovo audio driver
- Identify your exact Lenovo model and the Windows version installed on it.
- Use Lenovo Vantage or open the Lenovo ThinkPad audio troubleshooting page and Lenovo Support for your specific computer to find the appropriate audio driver.
- Choose a driver that matches both the machine and its Windows version; do not assume a driver for another Lenovo model is suitable.
- Follow Lenovo’s installation instructions, restart the laptop, and test the output device again.
Lenovo recommends reinstalling the latest audio driver through Lenovo Vantage or Lenovo Support. Its ThinkPad guidance cautions that steps may not apply to every computer. Lenovo Support; Lenovo ThinkPad audio troubleshooting
7. If sound stopped after a Windows update
Note whether the problem began immediately after an update; that timing is useful when following the Windows and Lenovo instructions for your device. First check whether the output device is still selected and detected, then use the model-specific Lenovo driver guidance above rather than installing a driver intended for a different machine. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so people still using it should account for that when planning future system support and updates. When to seek model-specific or hardware help
If the correct output is selected, connections are sound, the troubleshooter has run, and the appropriate driver is installed, but there is still no audio, consult Lenovo Support for the exact model. The troubleshooting steps above cannot establish that an internal speaker assembly has failed; do not order a replacement part based on a no-sound symptom alone.
