It is the edition with documented support from the GBTVGR Mod Manager, including asset-mod deployment, compatibility checks and the gbhook framework for code-based mods. The manager supports Steam and Epic installations, but its documentation warns that some custom-level and code mods require the Steam build. Choose the 2009 original only if its multiplayer mode or a subjective preference for its high-setting visuals matters more than having a verified modern mod workflow.
The short answer: Remastered on Steam
For a new PC purchase aimed at mods, the 2019 remaster is the lower-risk choice. The GBTVGR Mod Manager is built specifically for Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered. The original PC release, from 2009, is not proven to be unusable with mods. What is missing is an equally current, authoritative compatibility map for its tools, files and popular releases. That uncertainty is significant if you are buying specifically to experiment with community content.

Both versions present the licensed voices and likenesses of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson in an original story credited to Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. The remaster was developed by Saber Interactive for PC and consoles, while Terminal Reality developed the 2009 game.
Why Remastered has the stronger modding case
A dedicated manager instead of ad-hoc file copying
The GBTVGR Mod Manager is designed around the remastered game’s file layout. It assists with installing and removing mods, handles the asset containers used by the game and stores compatibility information. That gives you a repeatable way to test a mod, disable it and return to an unmodified setup rather than manually overwriting files each time.
Its support for typical Steam and Epic directories also helps when the game is installed outside a default library. You still need to point the utility at the correct installation when automatic detection does not find it.
gbhook enables code-based mods
Asset replacements change files the game already knows how to load. Code mods need a bridge into the engine. The documented gbhook framework provides that API. It has its own mods directory, which by default is in the main game directory—the folder containing ghost.exe. A mod that depends on gbhook is therefore not installed in the same way as a texture or model replacement; follow the mod’s package instructions and verify that its hook files and mod folder are in the expected location.

Compatibility warnings identify storefront limits
The manager records whether a mod is compatible with the detected game and warns when a custom-level or code mod is not running on Steam. Treat that warning as a hard requirement, not a cosmetic notice: an Epic installation may be perfectly valid for an asset mod while still failing to load a level or code extension written for Steam.
How to install Remastered mods on a Steam copy
Individual packages can use different names and loaders, so the exact files always come from the mod author. The following workflow matches the documented manager and folder model without assuming a particular mod’s contents.
- Install the game and launch it once. Let Steam finish its first-run setup, then exit. This creates the normal directory structure and confirms that the unmodified game starts.
- Locate the installation. In Steam, open the game’s properties, choose the installed-files or local-files option, and use the command that opens the installation folder. The folder you need is the one containing
ghost.exe. - Install GBTVGR Mod Manager. Use the manager’s documented release and point it to the Remastered installation if it does not detect the Steam library automatically. Do not select a parent library folder that does not contain the executable.
- Read the mod’s requirements first. Check whether it is an asset mod, a custom level or a code mod. Note any required game version, Steam-only warning, dependency or load-order instruction.
- Deploy through the manager when supported. Let the utility handle the relevant
MODS.PODorPATCH.PODworkflow. Keep the original download in a separate backup folder so you can reinstall a known-good copy. - Install
gbhook-based files exactly as documented. If the package calls for the framework’s mods directory, use the directory besideghost.exeunless the author specifies a different path. Do not place code mods in a generic Windows documents folder merely because another game uses one. - Enable one mod at a time. Start the game after each change. A single-mod test tells you whether a crash or missing asset came from the new package rather than from an interaction among several mods.
- Record a working state. Keep a short list of installed mods, their versions and any dependencies. If an update breaks the setup, disable the newest change first and restore the last known-good list.
Never overwrite the only copy of a save or configuration file while troubleshooting. Back up saves before installing a custom level, especially when the package changes progression or checkpoint data.
Steam, Epic or the original PC build?
Choose Steam Remastered when you want broad mod compatibility
- You want the edition targeted by GBTVGR Mod Manager documentation.
- You plan to use custom levels or code mods that may enforce a Steam check.
- You prefer a manager that can track compatibility and automate the game’s asset-container workflow.
- You want the 2019 PC release and accept that it has no original multiplayer mode.
Choose Epic Remastered only when your intended mods allow it
The manager documents support for typical Epic directories, so an Epic purchase is not automatically excluded. The limitation is per mod: custom-level and code packages can require Steam even when ordinary asset replacements install successfully. Before buying Epic, check the specific mods you intend to use for a storefront requirement.

Choose the 2009 original for multiplayer or its presentation
The original retains the multiplayer mode that the remaster omits. A Steam community comparison also argues that the original can look better at high settings in some scenes and that some remaster changes are limited. That is user testimony and a subjective visual preference, not an official performance specification. It should not outweigh the remaster’s documented mod tooling if mod breadth is your main criterion.
What the remaster changed—and what it removed
Saber Interactive’s remaster project involved recovering six versions of the game’s source code. According to the 2019 case study describing that work, the team could not determine which version was the correct one for the original multiplayer implementation. The remaster consequently shipped without that mode.
This is a feature trade-off, not evidence that the remaster is a lesser single-player package. It remains the modern PC edition marketed for current systems, with the same licensed cast likenesses and the original story framework. The decision is straightforward: multiplayer points to the 2009 release; documented mod support points to Remastered Steam.

Steam lists the following requirements for Remastered. They are the store’s published baseline, not a guarantee of a particular mod’s performance.

Steam also states that its client requires Windows 10 or later from January 1, 2024. That client policy can matter even though the game’s store listing still names Windows 7 SP2 as a minimum operating system. In practice, a supported Steam client and a 64-bit Windows installation are prerequisites for the Steam purchase and its update process.
Mods can raise practical requirements beyond the game’s listing. Large custom levels may need additional free disk space, while code hooks and several simultaneous asset packs can introduce conflicts. The published table does not establish a frame-rate target for modded installations.

The manager cannot find the game
Browse directly to the directory containing ghost.exe, not the Steam library root or a shortcut. If you moved the game, update the path in the manager and restart it. A first launch before manager setup can also create missing folders.

Check the manager’s compatibility message and the package notes. If the mod requires Steam, an Epic installation will not satisfy that requirement. Confirm that the game detected by the manager is Remastered rather than the 2009 executable.

An asset mod works, but a hook mod does not
Separate the two installation models. Asset packages belong in the manager’s supported deployment workflow; gbhook packages use the framework’s mods directory beside ghost.exe by default. Re-read the dependency list and test the hook alone before adding other code mods.
The game crashes after adding several mods
Disable the newest package, then re-enable mods one by one. Conflicting files, incompatible load order or a missing dependency can all produce the same symptom. Keep the manager’s compatibility metadata and your own version list so you can identify the first failing combination.
You need to return to an unmodified game
Use the manager to disable or remove managed packages, remove hook files only when the framework’s instructions permit it, and run Steam’s file-verification command. Restore your backed-up saves after confirming that the clean game reaches the main menu.

If you are undecided, buy the Steam remaster first. It aligns with the documented manager, preserves access to the game’s single-player campaign and leaves the storefront requirement satisfied for mods that enforce it. Select the original only for a specific reason—most notably multiplayer or a deliberate preference for its rendering—not because it is assumed to have equivalent current mod support.
