What counts as a turbocharged sedan that can challenge a V8?
A turbocharger forces more air into an engine, allowing a smaller engine to make the power of a larger naturally aspirated one. Two turbochargers can improve the spread of torque and response, while all-wheel drive helps convert that torque into a clean launch. Modern performance sedans add launch-control software, fast automatic transmissions and, in some cases, an electric motor that fills in low-speed torque.

The BMW M5 and Audi RS 7 performance are turbocharged sedans too, but each is still powered by a V8; they show how turbocharging can make a V8 even quicker. Do not rank these numbers as if they came from the same test day. BMW explicitly warns that specification, conditions, procedure and driving style affect its estimate, and the same limitation applies whenever a manufacturer publishes a launch time.
1. Cadillac CT5-V: the approachable twin-turbo V6
Cadillac describes the CT5-V engine as a “3.0L TWIN-TURBOCHARGED V6.” Its published output is 360 hp and 405 lb-ft, with a manufacturer 0–60-mph time of 4.6 seconds. That is serious acceleration for a midsize sedan and enough to embarrass many older or heavier V8 cars, especially from a rolling start where the twin turbos can keep the engine in its torque band.
The CT5-V is not the fastest Cadillac V sedan. The CT5-V Blackwing uses a 6.2L supercharged V8 rated at 668 hp and 659 lb-ft, with a published 3.4-second 0–60 claim. That Blackwing is the V8 reference point, not a turbocharged candidate, and the regular CT5-V should not be presented as quicker than it.

Why choose the CT5-V?
- Its V6 layout is smaller and generally easier to live with than a large-displacement performance V8.
- The 4.6-second claim puts it in the territory of many performance coupes while retaining a conventional sedan body.
- It offers a sensible entry point for drivers who want pace without the Blackwing’s extreme power and track focus.
Where it falls short
Against current 600-hp-plus V8 sedans, 360 hp and a 4.6-second launch are not “leaving rivals in the dust.” The CT5-V is the balanced, approachable choice in this group, not the outright acceleration winner.
2. Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing: the compact track specialist
The CT4-V Blackwing is Cadillac’s smaller twin-turbo V6 performance sedan. Its official specification page is the authority for the exact output and acceleration of the model year you are considering; those figures should be checked before ordering because equipment and model-year details can change. The car is positioned below the CT5-V Blackwing in size and uses a high-output turbocharged six-cylinder rather than Cadillac’s supercharged V8.
Its appeal is less about a single headline number than about the way a compact sedan uses power. A shorter body and track-oriented chassis can make the Blackwing feel more immediate on a road course or a tight back road than a larger V8 sedan, even when the larger car has more horsepower. Cadillac offers a manual-transmission path on this model in configurations where it is specified, giving it a character that the automatic-only cars in this comparison cannot reproduce.
How to evaluate the CT4-V Blackwing
- Open Cadillac’s CT4-V Blackwing specification page for your market and model year.
- Confirm the listed horsepower, torque and 0–60 estimate for the exact drivetrain and transmission.
- Check tire and brake equipment if you plan track use; those options can matter as much as the engine number.
- Compare its compact rear-seat and trunk dimensions with the CT5-V before treating it as a family-car substitute.
It is best understood as a turbocharged alternative to compact V8 muscle sedans and as a sharper, smaller companion to the CT5-V—not as a claim that every CT4-V Blackwing configuration beats every V8.

3. BMW M5 Sedan: a turbo V8 with electric backup
BMW’s current M5 technical data lists 717 bhp, 738 lb-ft and an estimated 0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds. The power comes from a 4.4L turbocharged V8 working with an electric motor, and the sedan uses all-wheel drive. In other words, the M5 is both a turbocharged sedan and a V8 benchmark; it is not evidence that a six-cylinder turbo has surpassed a V8 on its own.
The hybrid motor adds torque as the car launches and fills gaps while the engine builds boost. That helps explain how a large executive sedan can reach the mid-three-second range despite its size and equipment. BMW cautions that the result varies with specification, conditions, procedure and driving style, so a 3.4-second estimate should not be compared directly with an independently tested time for another car.
What the M5 does better than a lighter six-cylinder sedan
- It combines a high-output V8 with electric assistance for a broad, immediate torque curve.
- All-wheel drive improves repeatability on ordinary roads, where rear-wheel-drive launches can be traction-limited.
- Its large body provides executive-sedan space while retaining supercar-level straight-line pace.
The trade-off is complexity and mass. The M5’s speed comes from two propulsion systems, not from turbocharging alone, and its operating costs and packaging are different from those of a conventional V6 sedan.
4. Audi RS 7 performance: 621-hp biturbo liftback
Audi lists the RS 7 performance with an “assertive biturbo V8,” producing 621 hp and 627 lb-ft. Its published 0–60-mph time is 3.3 seconds. That makes it the quickest stated launch in this group, narrowly ahead of the M5’s 3.4-second estimate, although the different test procedures mean the two claims are not a laboratory head-to-head.

The RS 7’s important distinction is its body. It is a four-door liftback rather than a traditional three-box sedan, so the rear hatch opens to a wide cargo area. That gives it more loading flexibility than the silhouette suggests while preserving the low roof and broad stance of a grand-tourer.
Why the RS 7 belongs in a turbo-sedan comparison
It demonstrates that turbocharging is not limited to downsized engines. A biturbo system lets a V8 produce the torque and power needed to move a luxury liftback with extraordinary urgency. It is therefore a direct V8 rival to the M5, not a smaller-engine challenger like the Cadillacs or Genesis.
Drivers choosing between the RS 7 and M5 should focus on body style, cabin layout, control preferences and the exact equipment of each car rather than treating a tenth of a second in manufacturer claims as decisive.

The G80 3.5T is not positioned as a 600-hp M5 or RS 7 substitute. Its value is the combination of a smooth luxury cabin, available all-wheel drive and enough turbocharged power for confident passing and brisk highway launches. The product page’s quoted 375-hp figure is the key established output; a comparable torque or 0–60 figure is not stated in the supplied specification.
Who should consider it?
- Choose it when ride quality, cabin isolation and long-distance comfort matter more than track pace.
- Use Sport+ and launch control when you want a sharper response, while recognizing that those settings do not turn the G80 into a dedicated performance sedan.
- Verify whether the all-wheel-drive configuration, tires and other equipment you want are available in your market.
Which turbocharged sedan is actually quickest?
On the published figures alone, the Audi RS 7 performance has the lowest stated time at 3.3 seconds, followed by the BMW M5 at 3.4 seconds. Both are V8 cars, and the M5 also uses electric assistance. The CT5-V’s 4.6-second claim shows that a twin-turbo V6 can be genuinely fast without approaching their power levels. The CT4-V Blackwing may be the most compelling compact performance choice, but its exact current output and acceleration must be confirmed for the selected model year. Genesis’s G80 3.5T is the comfort and usability pick rather than the drag-strip winner.
How to make a fair V8-versus-turbo comparison
- Match model year and market. Equipment, emissions calibrations and available drivetrains can differ by country.
- Separate engine type from assistance. A turbocharged V8, a turbocharged V6 and a turbo-hybrid V8 are three different comparisons.
- Use the same measurement standard. Manufacturer 0–60 estimates are not interchangeable with independent instrumented tests.
- Record launch conditions. Temperature, fuel, surface, tire pressure and battery state on a hybrid can all influence the result.
- Compare the whole car. Rear-seat room, cargo access, transmission choice, brakes, tires and daily ride often matter more than a tenth of a second.
Bottom line for shoppers
Turbocharging can absolutely let a sedan outrun older or less powerful V8 rivals, but the headline needs context. The RS 7 performance and BMW M5 are the fastest listed cars here because they combine turbocharging with V8 displacement—and, in the M5, an electric motor. Cadillac’s CT5-V and CT4-V Blackwing show the more direct six-cylinder route to V8-challenging performance, while the Genesis G80 3.5T delivers a quieter, more comfort-led interpretation of the same idea.
