It keeps the drink crisp, agave-forward and refreshing. Use reposado tequila when you want a warmer, fuller profile, or choose white or lightly aged rum for a rounder, more tropical highball.
A reliable starting ratio is 2 oz spirit, 3–4 oz grapefruit soda and about 0.5 oz fresh lime juice over ice in a highball glass. Add a pinch of salt or a salt rim if you want the sweet, sour and salty balance associated with a Paloma.

The short answer: tequila for brightness, rum for richness
The best spirit depends on the character you want from the citrus soda. Grapefruit soda is already the defining flavor in a Paloma-style drink, supplying bitter-sweet citrus, sweetness and carbonation. The spirit should either sharpen that profile or deliberately pull it in another direction.
| What you want | Best starting spirit | How it changes the drink |
|---|---|---|
| Crisp, clean, agave-led refreshment | Blanco or silver tequila | Keeps the highball bright and lets grapefruit, lime and carbonation lead. |
| More warmth and body | Reposado tequila | Adds a rounder tequila character without abandoning the Paloma structure. |
| Round, rich, tropical flavor | White or lightly aged rum | Softens the sharp citrus impression and gives the drink a fuller tropical direction. |
| Distinct tropical notes | Caribbean rum with citrus, banana or coconut notes | Turns the grapefruit highball into a more aromatic rum cocktail. |
There is no universal winner between tequila and rum. Blanco tequila is the most faithful choice for a classic grapefruit-soda Paloma. Rum is the better deliberate choice when you want richness rather than a purely crisp agave profile.

Why grapefruit soda works with both spirits
Grapefruit soda supplies three important elements at once: citrus aroma, sweet-and-bitter flavor, and a carbonated, highly refreshing texture. Lime adds a separate, sharper acidity that keeps the soda from tasting flat or overly sweet. Salt can make the citrus seem more pronounced while reducing the impression of sweetness.
That combination explains why the same mixer can support two very different drinks. Blanco tequila reinforces the clean, sharp side of grapefruit and lime. Rum gives the same ingredients a softer center and, depending on the rum, tropical notes that can include fruit, banana or coconut.
The soda amount is a control rather than a fixed rule. Three ounces creates a more spirit-forward drink; four ounces makes a longer, lighter highball. Because grapefruit sodas differ in sweetness and intensity, adjust the pour after tasting rather than treating one measurement as mandatory.

Choosing tequila for a citrus soda cocktail
Blanco or silver tequila: the default choice
Choose blanco or silver tequila when you want a bright, clean drink in which the agave character remains noticeable. It is the most direct answer to “what tequila is best for a Paloma?” because the style does not compete with grapefruit soda’s bitterness or lime’s acidity.
Patrón’s official Paloma recipe describes a classic drink made with premium silver tequila and grapefruit soda. Its listed build is 2 oz silver tequila, 3 oz grapefruit soda and 0.5 oz fresh lime juice in a highball glass: Patrón Paloma Cocktail Recipe.
Use this style when the occasion calls for a light, refreshing highball, when the soda is strongly flavored, or when you want the lime and salt to remain clearly defined. Blanco is also the easiest starting point if you are making the drink for people who expect a classic Paloma rather than a rum variation.

Reposado tequila: a warmer variation
Reposado is a sound choice when blanco feels too lean or when you want more weight in the middle of the drink. Its warmer profile makes the cocktail feel rounder while grapefruit soda and lime preserve the refreshing structure.
José Cuervo’s Paloma version uses reposado tequila, demonstrating that the cocktail is not limited to an unaged spirit. The choice is best understood as a style change: the soda remains bright, but the tequila contributes more warmth and body.
Use the same starting ratio—2 oz spirit, 3–4 oz soda and about 0.5 oz lime—then decide whether the reposado needs the full soda amount. With a sweeter soda, the shorter 3 oz pour can keep the drink from becoming heavy.
When to choose tequila over rum
- Choose tequila when you want the drink to read immediately as a Paloma-style highball.
- Choose blanco when crispness and agave character matter most.
- Choose reposado when you want additional warmth without moving into a fully tropical flavor profile.
- Choose tequila when the grapefruit soda is the star and the spirit should provide structure rather than a new set of fruit flavors.
Choosing rum for a citrus soda cocktail
White or lightly aged rum: a rounder highball
Rum works when you want the citrus soda cocktail to feel softer, richer or more tropical. White or lightly aged rum keeps the color and texture relatively light while giving grapefruit and lime a rounder foundation than blanco tequila.
Havana Club’s Cuban Paloma uses rum, grapefruit soda and lime, describing the rum as bringing “rich, smooth depth” that complements the sharp grapefruit and lime. That description is recipe-maker guidance for the drink’s intended profile, not a universal tasting result for every rum: Havana Club Cuban Paloma.
Start with the same 2 oz spirit measure. If the rum is especially round or the soda is sweet, use 3 oz soda first and add more only if you want a longer drink. The goal is to preserve enough grapefruit bitterness and lime acidity to keep the rum from making the highball taste soft or syrupy.

Caribbean rum with tropical flavor
A rum with pronounced tropical notes can turn a grapefruit highball into something more aromatic. Angostura’s Rum Paloma uses Reserva Caribbean rum and describes its flavor as rich and tropical, with citrus, bananas and coconuts: Angostura Rum Paloma.
This style is appropriate when you want the spirit to be part of the flavor story rather than a neutral base. Banana and coconut notes can make the drink feel fuller, while grapefruit and lime keep it from becoming exclusively sweet or dessert-like.
When to choose rum over tequila
- Choose rum when you want a rounder mouthfeel and richer center.
- Choose white or lightly aged rum for a restrained tropical variation.
- Choose a more expressive Caribbean rum when citrus, banana or coconut notes are welcome.
- Choose rum when you want a Cuban- or tropical-inspired interpretation rather than a strictly agave-led Paloma.
The dependable starting formula
For one drink, use this framework:
| Ingredient | Starting amount | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Blanco, reposado, white or lightly aged rum | 2 oz | Sets the spirit’s weight and flavor. |
| Grapefruit soda | 3–4 oz | Provides citrus, sweetness and carbonation. |
| Fresh lime juice | About 0.5 oz | Adds sharp acidity and prevents a flat, sugary impression. |
| Salt | A pinch or a rim | Balances sweetness and heightens perceived citrus. |
| Ice | Enough to fill the highball | Chills and dilutes the drink as it is served. |
The formula is intentionally flexible. The 2 oz spirit measure keeps tequila or rum present, while the 3–4 oz soda range lets you adjust strength, sweetness and carbonation. Fresh lime is measured separately because bottled or highly sweetened lime products can change the balance.

- Choose the spirit. Use blanco or silver tequila for the crispest classic profile, reposado for warmth, or white/lightly aged rum for a richer tropical direction.
- Prepare the glass. Use a highball glass. If you want a salty finish, moisten the rim and apply salt before adding ice.
- Fill with ice. Add enough ice to chill the drink while leaving room for the spirit, lime and soda.
- Add the spirit. Measure 2 oz tequila or rum. Accurate measurement matters because the soda range is narrow; too much spirit can overpower the citrus, while too little can make the drink taste like sweet soda.
- Add fresh lime. Pour about 0.5 oz lime juice over the spirit and ice.
- Top with grapefruit soda. Add 3 oz for a more concentrated drink or up to 4 oz for a longer, lighter highball.
- Stir gently. Make a few gentle turns to combine without quickly driving off the carbonation.
- Taste and adjust. Add a little more soda if the drink is too strong, a small amount of lime if it tastes too sweet, or a pinch of salt if the citrus lacks definition.
How lime and salt change the balance
Lime juice
Lime is not merely a garnish in this format. At about 0.5 oz, it supplies a sharper acidity than grapefruit soda and gives the drink a more focused finish. If the soda is particularly tart, begin slightly below that amount and increase gradually; if it is very sweet, the full measure can help restore balance.
Adding lime before the soda helps it integrate with the spirit. Once the drink is topped, gentle stirring distributes the acidity without flattening the carbonation.
Salt
A salt rim or a pinch of salt supports the sweet-sour-salty balance associated with a Paloma. Salt can make grapefruit and lime seem more vivid and can reduce the perception of excess sweetness.

Use a light hand. A full, heavy rim can dominate the first sip, especially with a delicate blanco tequila. A partial rim lets the drinker choose how much salt reaches each sip. If you add salt directly to the drink, start with a pinch and taste before adding more.
Adjusting soda, sweetness and strength
If the drink tastes too strong
Add grapefruit soda in small increments until the spirit and citrus sit in balance. Moving from 3 oz toward 4 oz lengthens the drink without changing the amount of lime. Stir gently after each addition so you can judge the effect of dilution and carbonation.
If the drink tastes too sweet
First add a little more lime, then consider a small pinch of salt. These changes address balance without replacing the grapefruit character. Avoid adding a large amount of extra soda, which may make a sweet drink longer but not less sweet.
If the drink tastes too sharp
Use the larger end of the soda range or reduce the lime slightly in the next build. This is especially useful with a highly tart grapefruit soda or a reposado tequila whose warmth you want to keep visible.
If the drink tastes flat
Check that the soda was added last and that it was stirred gently rather than vigorously. Fresh ice, a cold highball and a recently opened carbonated mixer help preserve the refreshing texture. If the flavor is dull rather than merely under-carbonated, a small amount of fresh lime or salt may restore definition.

Matching the soda to the spirit
The grapefruit soda is not interchangeable with the spirit; it is the mixer that defines the family of drink. A strongly flavored soda can stand up to reposado tequila or expressive rum. A lighter soda may be better with blanco tequila, where the agave remains part of the profile.

Use less soda when you want the spirit to remain prominent. Use more when the aim is a tall, easy-drinking highball. Because the recipes cited use grapefruit soda specifically, substituting another citrus soda changes the drink’s identity and may require a different lime and salt balance.
Glass, ice and carbonation
A highball glass suits this cocktail because it provides room for ice, spirit, lime and a generous carbonated top. The tall format also keeps the drink refreshing rather than concentrated.
Ice serves both chilling and dilution purposes. Fill the glass before adding the soda so the drink is cold from the first pour. Add the soda after the spirit and lime, then stir only enough to combine. Vigorous stirring or repeated pouring can remove the carbonation that gives the drink its lift.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsServe soon after building. The soda’s carbonation is part of the texture, so a freshly made drink will taste brighter than one left standing.
Three proven style directions
Classic silver-tequila Paloma
Follow the structure of the Patrón recipe: 2 oz silver tequila, 3 oz grapefruit soda and 0.5 oz fresh lime juice in a highball. This is the most direct version for a crisp, agave-forward result. A salt rim is optional.
Reposado Paloma
Use 2 oz reposado tequila and begin with 3 oz grapefruit soda plus about 0.5 oz lime. This follows the reposado direction represented by José Cuervo’s Paloma recipe. Increase the soda toward 4 oz if you prefer a lighter, longer drink.
Cuban or tropical rum Paloma
Use 2 oz white or lightly aged rum, 3–4 oz grapefruit soda and about 0.5 oz lime. Havana Club’s Cuban version demonstrates the rum, grapefruit and lime combination, while Angostura’s version shows how a Caribbean rum with citrus, banana and coconut notes can create a more overtly tropical expression.
A practical decision guide
- You want the safest classic choice: choose blanco or silver tequila.
- You like tequila but want more body: choose reposado and keep the soda near 3 oz at first.
- You prefer softer, rounder cocktails: choose white or lightly aged rum.
- You want tropical fruit character: choose an expressive Caribbean rum and let the grapefruit remain the bitter-citrus counterpoint.
- Your soda is very sweet: use the lower soda amount, keep the lime, and consider a small pinch of salt.
- Your soda is very bitter or tart: use the larger soda amount or slightly reduce the lime.
- You are serving a mixed group: build one drink with blanco tequila and another with rum so people can compare crisp agave against round tropical depth.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using too much soda immediately: the drink can become diluted and hide the spirit. Start at 3 oz and extend only when needed.
- Skipping lime: grapefruit soda alone can taste one-dimensional or sweet. The small lime measure supplies needed sharpness.
- Over-salting: salt should frame the citrus, not dominate it.
- Stirring aggressively: carbonation is part of the cocktail’s refreshment; combine gently.
- Treating every rum as interchangeable: a light rum and a tropical, aromatic Caribbean rum create different results.
- Assuming reposado is simply “better” than blanco: reposado is warmer, not universally superior. Select it only when that added body suits the drink.
- Ignoring the soda’s sweetness: the same spirit ratio can taste different with different grapefruit sodas, so taste and adjust within the 3–4 oz range.
Bottom line for choosing your bottle
Buy or pour blanco/silver tequila when your priority is a crisp, recognizable Paloma with bright agave, grapefruit and lime. Choose reposado tequila for a warmer variation. Choose white or lightly aged rum when you want a richer, smoother highball, and choose an expressive Caribbean rum when tropical citrus, banana or coconut notes are part of the appeal.
Build with 2 oz spirit, 3–4 oz grapefruit soda and about 0.5 oz lime over ice in a highball, then use salt and gentle stirring to fine-tune the balance.
