Then reduce visual noise: choose the Andromeda stage, turn off Hit Particles and Spawn Indicator under Settings > Visuals, and select note textures and colors that remain distinct in your headset. Leave Note Jump Speed at the map’s normal value while you diagnose visibility. If only custom tracks are affected, verify that the chart and game are on compatible versions before changing visual settings.
These changes address different causes of unreadable charts. Contrast Corridor separates notes from the stage, textures distinguish note types without relying only on hue, clutter controls remove particles and indicators, and stage choice controls background lighting. Note Jump Speed changes how quickly patterns arrive; it is a timing-density control, not a universal contrast fix.

Start with a low-clutter baseline
Use this sequence before making fine adjustments. It gives you a stable reference for both official songs and custom maps, so you can tell whether a change solved the actual problem.
- Open Settings > Gameplay and enable Contrast Corridor.
- Open Settings > Colors. Give each note type a clearly different texture where possible, then choose colors with strong separation from one another and from the background. Use the color preview and RGB hex entry to refine them.
- Open Settings > Visuals and set Hit Particles to Off and Spawn Indicator to Off.
- Choose the Andromeda stage for testing. Its lack of floor lights makes it the developer’s stated low-clutter starting point.
- Try Immersive Mode. If the Rails Counter draws your attention away from incoming notes, turn it off.
- Keep Note Jump Speed at the chart’s normal value until contrast, textures, particles and lighting are under control.
- Replay the same difficult section after each meaningful change instead of changing several unrelated settings at once.
This baseline is not a claim that every player needs identical colors or that Andromeda is best for every song. It is a repeatable way to isolate background lighting, effects and note styling before you alter timing behavior.

Enable Contrast Corridor when notes merge with the stage
Contrast Corridor is the clearest single switch for a busy background. The option displays a dark corridor along the line of play, creating a darker field behind incoming notes. The official patch description says it is intended to improve visibility on some stages.
Use it first when notes are technically present but disappear against moving scenery, floor lighting or bright effects. It is especially useful when a chart is readable in the song preview or editor but becomes difficult once the stage animation starts.
When the corridor helps
- Notes have adequate size but their edges blend into the stage.
- Several note lanes pass over bright or animated floor elements.
- A custom chart uses patterns that cross different parts of the play space and therefore encounter changing backgrounds.
When it is not enough
The corridor does not change note timing, note geometry or the chart’s authored colors. If two note types still look alike inside the corridor, adjust textures and colors. If notes arrive in an overwhelming stream, inspect Note Jump Speed only after the contrast problem is solved.
Use note textures and colors that do not depend on hue alone
Open Settings > Colors and treat the menu as two separate controls: the visual pattern of each note type and the color assigned to it. Synth Riders supports separate note textures for each note type, color previews, RGB hex entry and solid note colors. Texture differences are valuable when similar hues, stage lighting or headset color perception make a purely color-based scheme unreliable.
Build a distinguishable palette
- Assign visibly different textures to note types that you confuse during fast patterns.
- Choose colors with a clear brightness difference as well as a hue difference. A light and dark pair is usually easier to separate than two colors with similar brightness.
- Preview the combination in the headset, not only on a monitor or settings screen. Headset displays, game brightness and stage effects can change how close colors appear.
- Use RGB hex entry when the on-screen swatches do not give you enough control. Record a working value so you can restore it after experimenting.
- Test solid note colors if gradients, glow or texture shading make the note boundary harder to see.
Do not assume that a color that looks distinct in a menu will remain distinct during a song. The useful test is whether you can identify each note type while moving your head and hands, with the stage running and particles disabled.

Separate note readability from controller and obstacle colors
The developer’s low-clutter guidance also recommends darker controller and obstacle colors. Those elements can compete with notes for attention even when they do not overlap directly. Darker choices reduce that competition, while your note palette remains the high-contrast element. Make one change at a time so you know whether a problem came from note colors or from the surrounding objects.
Remove effects that obscure the next note
Visual effects can hide the short window in which you need to identify a note. The developer Wirrel’s stated low-fidelity comfort setup is specific: use Andromeda because it has no floor lights, turn Hit Particles off, and turn Spawn Indicator off. Start there before deciding that a chart itself is poorly authored.
Hit Particles
Set Settings > Visuals > Hit Particles to Off when impact bursts remain on screen long enough to mask the following pattern. This is most noticeable in dense streams, repeated hits and sections where the next note appears close to the previous one.
Spawn Indicator
Set Settings > Visuals > Spawn Indicator to Off if the arrival cue draws your eye away from the actual note. Removing it can make the play space calmer, although players who use the indicator as an orientation aid may prefer to keep it on. Evaluate the choice in the section that causes trouble rather than in an empty part of a song.
Immersive Mode and Rails Counter
Try Immersive Mode as part of the same low-clutter pass. If the Rails Counter competes with the lane or pattern you are reading, turn it off. These controls affect attention and interface density rather than the authored notes, so their value depends on what your eyes naturally follow.

Do not use Note Jump Speed as a first-line visibility fix
Note Jump Speed changes the distance and timing relationship between a note’s spawn and its arrival. A faster value can make a dense chart feel compressed because more information reaches you in a shorter visual window. That may be experienced as a readability problem, but increasing speed does not add contrast or remove clutter.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Official notes list a 3x Note Jump Speed modifier and explain that custom-difficulty Note Jump Speed interacts with score eligibility. For that reason, leave the map’s normal value in place while you tune contrast, colors and visual effects. Once the notes are clearly visible, experiment with speed only if the chart still feels too compressed or too slow for your reading style.
A safe speed-testing method
- Play the same section at the map’s normal Note Jump Speed with Contrast Corridor and low-clutter visuals enabled.
- Change only the speed setting and replay the section.
- Check whether you are missing notes because they are visually hidden or because the pattern reaches you sooner than expected.
- For custom difficulties, confirm how the selected speed affects score eligibility before treating a modified run as comparable to a normal-score run.
- Keep the value that gives you enough visual planning time without making the chart feel unnaturally stretched.
If a speed change makes notes easier to anticipate but the background remains confusing, restore the normal value and continue working on contrast. Speed and visibility are separate variables.
Stage lighting can decide whether a chart is readable
Stage choice is not cosmetic when floor lights or animated scenery sit behind the play lane. Andromeda is specifically recommended by the developer because it has no floor lights, making it a useful diagnostic stage. If a difficult official track becomes readable there, the original stage’s lighting is likely contributing to the problem.
Use the stage test to distinguish a chart issue from a presentation issue:

- Readable on Andromeda, difficult on the original stage: background lighting or animation is competing with the notes. Keep Contrast Corridor on and consider using the lower-clutter stage for practice.
- Difficult on both stages: inspect note textures, color separation, particles and spawn indicators before changing timing.
- Only one custom chart is difficult: check that chart’s authored effects and version compatibility instead of assuming your global settings are wrong.
Stage substitution may change the feel of a song, so use it as a practice and diagnosis tool. The goal is to identify whether the stage is hiding information, not to claim that every track should be played on one stage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check custom-map and game-version compatibility
A custom track can appear visually broken when the underlying content is not compatible with the installed game version. Version 3 notes specify that custom content must be placed under the SynthRidersUC folder and that only custom stages updated for Version 3 work with Version 3. Steam provides a legacy beta channel for Version 2.
Symptoms of a compatibility problem
- A custom stage loads with missing or incorrect visual elements while official stages behave normally.
- The chart’s lighting or effects look unlike the creator’s intended presentation.
- Several older custom stages fail in similar ways after a game update.
- Changing colors and Contrast Corridor has little effect because the stage itself is not loading correctly.
What to verify
- Confirm which game version you are running.
- Check that the custom content is in the
SynthRidersUCfolder required for Version 3. - Verify that the custom stage has been updated for Version 3.
- If the content is Version 2-only, use Steam’s
legacybeta channel for Version 2 where appropriate, or obtain a Version 3-compatible update from the map creator. - Retest the chart after compatibility is corrected, before changing Note Jump Speed or rebuilding your color scheme.
This check matters because a version mismatch can look like low contrast, missing indicators or abnormal stage lighting. Fixing the content version is more effective than compensating with player settings.
Compare two practical setups

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Element | Low-clutter readability setup | Default-like setup to compare |

| Note textures | Different texture for each note type | Same or similar textures, relying more on color |
| Colors | High brightness and hue separation; verify in-headset | Personal defaults, tested for collisions |
| Hit Particles | Off | On if you need impact feedback and it does not obscure notes |
| Spawn Indicator | Off | On if its cue helps you orient |
| Stage | Andromeda, with no floor lights | The song’s original stage |
| Rails Counter | Off when distracting | On when it provides useful information |
| Note Jump Speed | Map’s normal value during diagnosis | Changed only after visibility is stable |
| Custom content | Version and folder confirmed | Unverified content, which can create apparent visual faults |
Run the same passage with both setups. Compare whether you can identify note types, see the next pattern through effects, and maintain attention when the stage changes. Do not judge a setup solely by how clean it looks in a menu.
Best Value
Troubleshoot by symptom
Notes vanish against bright scenery
Enable Contrast Corridor, switch to Andromeda for a test, and remove floor-light competition. If the notes remain hard to separate, change texture and brightness before touching speed.
Notes are visible, but note types look identical
Assign different textures under Settings > Colors, then use RGB hex values or solid colors to increase brightness separation. A hue change alone may not solve the problem.
The next pattern disappears after every hit
Turn Hit Particles off. If the problem continues, turn Spawn Indicator off and test again. These changes remove effects that can occupy the same visual window as the next note.
The chart feels impossibly fast even though notes are clear
Restore Note Jump Speed to the map’s normal value and confirm whether the custom difficulty uses a different authored speed. Remember that custom-difficulty speed can affect score eligibility.
Only older custom stages look wrong
Investigate Version 3 compatibility, the SynthRidersUC folder and whether each stage was updated for Version 3. Use the Steam Version 2 legacy beta channel only when the content requires it.
A repeatable tuning routine
Once the baseline works, refine it with controlled changes:
- Select one representative section containing the visual problem, preferably the same section you can replay consistently.
- Keep Contrast Corridor on while testing colors and textures so the background remains stable.
- Change one visual control, play the section, and note whether identification improved, stayed the same or became distracting.
- Test the winning visual combination on a different official stage and a known-compatible custom stage.
- Only then test Note Jump Speed, recording the original value and checking score-eligibility implications for custom difficulties.
- Save or document your preferred color values and the stages that remain easiest to read, so an update or profile change is easy to recover from.
The most reliable setup is the one that preserves note-type recognition across stages, not the one that looks most dramatic in a screenshot. Contrast Corridor, differentiated textures, low-clutter visuals and compatible custom content address the main independent causes of difficult reading; speed should be the final variable you adjust.
