Your Synth Riders score reaches an online leaderboard only when the run is played while the game is online and authenticated. Once submitted, where you see it depends on two controls: the leaderboard scope (Global, Self or Friends) and the modifier filter (Combined or Modified).
For the highest online score you have on a song, difficulty and mode, open Self + Combined. Use Self + Modified only when you need a score made with exactly the same modifiers, including No Fail. Offline runs are not uploaded later.

What determines whether a score appears
Leaderboard visibility is not controlled by one universal “submit” switch. The game evaluates several independent conditions. A run must first be eligible for online submission, then you must look in the view that matches its scope, modifiers and song identity.

These dimensions explain why two apparently identical leaderboard screens can show different results. Compare them in that order rather than repeatedly replaying the song.

Online versus offline play
The official Synth Riders update of 29 July 2020 states: “In this mode, scores will not be saved or submitted.” That statement applies to offline play. A run completed while disconnected is therefore not queued for a later upload; reconnecting afterward does not turn it into an online leaderboard entry.
You may still see a result on the device’s local scoreboard. The developer distinguishes that local record from the online service: the local scoreboard stores the highest score overall, while online views are server records organized by song, difficulty, mode and modifier conditions. Treat a local number as evidence of what happened on the headset or PC, not proof that the server accepted the score.
How to establish that a run was online
- Look for the game’s connected, rather than offline, state before beginning the song.
- Make sure the platform account and Synth Riders authentication have completed successfully.
- If the service disconnected during or immediately after the run, assume submission is uncertain until the score appears in Self + Combined.
There is no supported “upload offline scores” step in the cited official guidance. If an offline attempt matters, replay it while connected.
Combined and Modified: the critical distinction
The official update defines the filters plainly: “Combined view shows all scores regardless of modifiers used,” while “Modified view shows only those scores set using the modifiers which you have selected.” The two views answer different questions.
Combined
Combined collapses modifier variations when determining the result you see. In Self + Combined, the developer describes the result as your highest score for the selected song, difficulty and mode, regardless of modifiers. A score made with No Fail, Faster Song, or another modifier can therefore be the row shown even when those modifiers are not currently selected.

Choose Combined when your question is, “What is my best online score on this chart?” It is also the quickest way to find a score that seems to have vanished because your current modifier selection does not match the run.
Modified
Modified is an exact-condition view. It returns scores made with the modifiers currently selected, not merely scores that produced a similar outcome. If No Fail was enabled for the stored run, No Fail must be enabled in the filter; if it was disabled, disable it in the filter. The same principle applies to every other selected modifier.

It can legitimately show no score even though you have an online score in Combined.
Why “Self says no score set”
The most common explanation is a filter mismatch. For example, your run may be online and present in Combined, but the current Modified view may have No Fail selected while the stored run did not use it. Because Modified requires the exact selected set, it reports no matching score rather than falling back to your best score under different conditions.
- Open the same song, difficulty and mode.
- Select Self and Combined.
- If your score appears there, inspect the modifiers recorded for that run.
- Switch to Modified only after reproducing that exact modifier selection.
Leaderboard scopes: Global, Self and Friends
Scope controls whose records are eligible to appear; it does not change the score itself.

The developer summarized these three views on 11 September 2023 as “GLOBAL – All scores; SELF – My scores only; FRIENDS – Platform friends scores, including mine.” A score absent from Global but present in Self is not automatically a failed submission; check whether the two screens use the same filter, chart and mode. Conversely, a score absent from Self + Combined points more strongly toward submission, authentication, map identity or chart-selection trouble.

No Fail and other modifiers
No Fail does not by itself make a run ineligible for online submission. It changes the run’s modifier condition and can affect the score value. In a developer example, a failed song completed with No Fail received a 50% score penalty (Wirrel, 2023).
When No Fail causes a visibility surprise
Suppose you select No Fail, finish a run without actually failing, and later look at Modified. A score made without No Fail may not appear because the filter is asking for the No Fail condition, not because the game judged the result invalid. Turn No Fail off to match the original run, or use Combined to see your highest score regardless of modifiers.
Modifier combinations are separate conditions
The developer says it is possible to set a score for every possible combination of modifiers, with those records exposed through the Modifiers filter. This means two records on the same song and difficulty can coexist when their modifier sets differ. Combined selects the highest result across those conditions; Modified isolates one exact combination.
For a controlled comparison, write down every active modifier before playing. For a personal-best hunt, leave the filter on Combined and avoid changing it merely because a previous run used a different setup.

Why a local high score can exceed the global result
A higher local number than the number you see in Global is possible because the two records are not the same database entry. The local scoreboard can retain the highest result recorded on the device, while Global displays a server-accepted result for the selected song, difficulty, mode and filter.
Check the following distinctions before concluding that the game reduced your score:
- The local run may have been offline and never submitted.
- The online screen may be set to Modified while the local high used a different modifier set.
- You may be viewing a different difficulty or mode from the local result.
- A custom map may have changed, creating a new leaderboard identity.
- The server may not have accepted the result after a connection or authentication failure.
Use Self + Combined with the exact chart context to make the fairest local-versus-online comparison.

Leaderboards are tied to a song’s map, not just the song title displayed to you. The official update notes that changing a custom map can create a new leaderboard. If a mapper edits the chart, updates its identity or replaces the file, a score from the earlier map can remain attached to the old leaderboard.
When troubleshooting a custom song, confirm that you and the leaderboard are using the same map version. Searching by title alone is not enough. A missing score on the current map may be expected if the run was made on an earlier map identity.
Step-by-step diagnostic procedure
Follow this sequence once, changing one variable at a time.
- Confirm the network state. Establish that the run was played online. If it was offline, do not expect a later upload; replay while connected.
- Reopen the exact chart context. Select the same song, difficulty and mode. For a custom song, verify the map identity or version.
- Use Self + Combined first. This view searches your highest online result without imposing the current modifier set. If the score appears, the submission succeeded and the earlier discrepancy was a view or condition mismatch.
- Match modifiers for an exact check. Switch to Modified and reproduce every modifier used in the run, including No Fail. A missing row here can simply mean that one setting differs.
- Compare scopes. After locating the personal result, switch to Friends or Global without changing the song, difficulty, mode or filter. This isolates a scope difference from a submission problem.
- Check connection and authentication. If the local result exists but Self + Combined does not show it, inspect the connection state, account authentication and the game’s error log. The developer says failed communications can stop submission after the game retries three times.
- Retry under clean conditions. Reconnect, authenticate, keep the intended modifier set fixed and replay the chart. Verify Self + Combined immediately afterward.

Recommended settings for common goals
Find your best score on a chart
Select the song, difficulty and mode, then use Self + Combined. Do not add or remove modifiers merely to make the screen “match” a prior run; Combined is designed to disregard those differences when finding your highest result.
Compare identical conditions with another player
Use the same song, difficulty, mode and complete modifier set on both sides. Select Modified, then choose Global or Friends depending on whether the comparison is worldwide or limited to platform friends.

First look in Self + Combined. If it is present, submission worked regardless of the filter currently selected. Then select Modified with No Fail enabled to isolate that condition. Remember that a failed No Fail run can carry the developer-documented 50% penalty.
Investigate a missing custom-song result
Confirm the map version before changing leaderboard filters. A map edit can move the run to a separate leaderboard, making a filter change alone ineffective.
What the documented guidance does not establish
The official material defines offline behavior, scopes, filters, modifier matching, map identity and the developer’s retry explanation. It does not provide a platform-independent remedy for every current leaderboard outage, nor does it guarantee that menu labels or server behavior will remain unchanged across future builds. If these controls look different in your version, record the exact build, platform and error message before seeking support; the diagnostic distinctions still give you the facts needed to describe the problem accurately.
