The best app for learning a new skill depends on what you want to learn and how you need to practise. Duolingo focuses on language lessons; Skillshare on creative classes; LinkedIn Learning on professional skills; Coursera on courses and credentials; Yousician on music; and Mimo on coding. This is a category-based shortlist, not a tested ranking: choose the format that fits your goal, then check the app’s current price and access options.
How to choose an app for learning a new skill
Start with the skill, not the app’s popularity. A language habit, a portfolio project, a career-focused learning path and a first programming exercise all call for different kinds of instruction and practice.

- Choose a format that fits the work. Short lessons may help you establish a routine; a guided sequence can help organize a broader topic; creative classes may be useful when you want to explore a technique or project.
- Look for practice, not just videos. Quizzes, exercises or other active work can help you apply what you are learning. Confirm that a specific course includes the practice tools you need.
- Check cost and access before committing. Subscription prices, free access and course availability can change. Check the current terms in the app or on its official site, including whether a displayed monthly amount is billed annually.
- Define what progress means. Completing lessons or earning a certificate is not, by itself, proof of mastery. For practical skills, decide how you will apply what you learn—such as speaking, making a project or solving a problem.
The six apps below cover different learning goals. The available evidence supports their broad categories and some format details, but not a head-to-head assessment of learning outcomes, prices or regional availability.

Duolingo for building a language-learning habit
Duolingo describes its lessons as short and game-like, with points, levels, challenges, reminders and feedback. That combination makes it a natural option if you want a structured way to practise regularly. It should not be treated as proof that using the app alone will make you fluent; the available information does not establish language-learning outcomes.

Skillshare for creative classes
Skillshare offers on-demand classes in areas including design, art, photography, filmmaking, cooking, marketing, crafts and music. Its learning paths are intended to guide learners toward goals, so it may suit someone who wants to explore a creative area through classes rather than follow a conventional academic course.
Rank #2
Skillshare’s pricing page lists an annual plan billed at $167.88 USD, displayed as $13.99 per month when billed annually. This is the price shown on that page, not a guarantee of the price available to every user or at a later date. Check the current terms before subscribing. See Skillshare pricing and Skillshare’s class and membership information.
LinkedIn Learning for career and professional skills
LinkedIn Learning groups courses into business, technology and creative topics. Its guided learning paths combine courses around a larger subject, while the platform describes features such as quizzes, exercise files and virtual coding environments. Those resources make it a relevant option when you want structured study connected to a professional goal; check individual courses for the practice materials they actually include.

Coursera for courses and credentials
Apple’s App Store editorial identifies Coursera with courses, certificates and degrees. That makes it a category to consider if you want a more formally structured course or are exploring credential options. Availability, price and the terms attached to a credential depend on the specific offering; check those details before enrolling.
Rank #4

What this shortlist can—and cannot—tell you
The six apps are not interchangeable: they address language, creative work, professional learning, courses and credentials, music, and coding. The information available for Duolingo, Skillshare and LinkedIn Learning describes aspects of their formats; for Coursera, Yousician and Mimo, it supports a narrower category description.
There is no comparative evidence here showing that one app produces better learning, higher completion or greater fluency than another. Nor is there a complete, current comparison of prices, free access, credential value or availability by device and region. Treat the list as a way to narrow your options, not as a universal ranking or a promise of results.
