The Sony SRS-XB12 takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes to charge an empty battery fully when the speaker is turned off, according to Sony’s model-specific Help Guide. This is an estimate: battery condition and use can affect the time, and charging may take longer while the speaker is playing.

How long does the SRS-XB12 take to charge?

Sony’s SRS-XB12 Help Guide estimates approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes to charge an empty battery to full with the speaker turned off. Treat that as an approximate charging time rather than a promise for every battery, cable, adapter, or charging condition.

Sony also gives a general estimate of approximately three hours for an empty Bluetooth-speaker battery in a support article last modified May 25, 2022. That figure conflicts with the SRS-XB12-specific guide. Sony does not explain the difference; for this model, the model-specific estimate is the more relevant one.

How to charge the speaker

  1. Connect the supplied micro-USB cable to the speaker’s DC IN 5V jack.
  2. For wall charging, connect the other end to a commercially available USB AC adapter and plug the adapter into an AC outlet. Sony specifies an adapter output current of 500 mA or more.
  3. Alternatively, connect the cable to a computer that is turned on. Sony documents both methods but does not establish that one is universally faster.
  4. When charging is complete, close the port cap securely. Do not charge where water may splash: the charging connector and accessories are not waterproof or dustproof.

Sony recommends the supplied cable or a USB-standard micro-USB cable. Charging from other devices is not guaranteed. A higher-current adapter is not documented as a way to reduce the stated charging time.

How to tell when charging is finished

The orange CHG indicator lights while the speaker is charging and turns off when charging is complete. A low battery causes a slow orange flash. If the battery is already full when you connect the cable, the indicator may light briefly and then turn off after about one minute; that alone does not mean charging failed.

A rapid flash—three times per second—signals an abnormality. Stop charging if this happens and contact Sony support.

Why charging may take longer

The speaker is playing

The SRS-XB12 can charge while in use, but Sony says charging may take longer depending on how it is being used. At high volume, the battery may continue to run down even while the speaker is connected to power. Turn it off while charging when possible; if you need to play music, lower the volume.

The temperature is outside the charging range

Charge between 5 °C and 35 °C (41 °F and 95 °F). Sony says charging may stop in very hot or cold conditions, or if charging takes too long. If it stops, disconnect and reconnect the micro-USB cable once the speaker is within the recommended temperature range.

The battery has been unused or has aged

After a long period without use, the battery may take longer to charge. Sony recommends fully charging it once every six months even when the speaker is not in use. If a full charge now gives significantly less usable time than before, Sony advises contacting a Sony dealer.

What to check if it does not charge

  • Confirm that the micro-USB cable is connected to the speaker’s DC IN 5V jack and to a working power source.
  • Try another suitable USB AC adapter or another USB port on a computer.
  • Check that the speaker is within the 5 °C to 35 °C charging range; if it had stopped charging in extreme temperatures, unplug and reconnect the cable after it returns to that range.
  • If the CHG indicator flashes rapidly, stop charging. If the problem persists after checking the power source and temperature, contact Sony support.

Charging time is not playback time

Sony lists approximately 16 hours of battery life in its SRS-XB12 specifications. The Help Guide gives playback examples of about 16 hours at volume level 27 and about five hours at maximum volume; actual playback time varies with volume, music, temperature, and use. These are estimates of how long the speaker plays, not how long it takes to charge.
