Moto G models differ, so use the guide for your exact model; the menu paths below are examples from Motorola’s North American English guide for the moto g – 2025 running software version 16.
1. Finish setup and transfer your data
If you skipped copying files during initial setup, open Settings and select Finish setting up your device. Motorola’s setup guidance also says to sign in on the new phone with the same Google account used for the transfer. Check that the items you expected—such as contacts, photos, and apps—are present before wiping or trading in your old phone. Motorola setup support

2. Check for Android updates
On the moto g – 2025 guide’s software version 16, open Settings > System updates > Check for updates. Motorola says, “For best performance, keep your phone updated with the latest available Android software.” Connect to Wi-Fi before downloading if you want to avoid mobile data charges. This check only reports updates currently available for your device; it does not establish how long Motorola will support a particular model or when an update will arrive. 3. Secure the phone and prepare for loss
Set a screen lock
Choose a PIN, password, or pattern that you can remember but others cannot easily guess. If your exact Moto G has a fingerprint sensor, you can add fingerprint unlock for convenience while retaining the screen lock as a backup.

Check lock-screen notifications
Decide whether message content should be visible when the phone is locked. Showing full notifications makes them easier to glance at; hiding sensitive content reduces what someone nearby can read without unlocking the phone.
Enable recovery options
Motorola’s 2025 guide recommends setting up Find Hub and recording the phone’s IMEI. Find Hub can help with locating a lost device when its requirements are met; keep the IMEI somewhere separate from the phone in case you need to identify it to your carrier or authorities. Motorola’s 2024 Moto G 5G guide cautions that turning off a permission can prevent an app from working correctly. Motorola moto g 5G User Guide

Use Battery Saver when the trade-off makes sense
Battery Saver and limits on background activity or syncing can extend runtime, but may delay updates or reduce convenience. Turn them on when you need extra time away from a charger rather than assuming every power-saving control should always be enabled.
Adjust screen power use
Lowering screen brightness or shortening screen timeout can reduce display use. Choose levels that remain comfortable to read; the best setting depends on lighting and how you use the phone. Motorola’s moto g – 2025 guide describes these controls along with other power options. Motorola moto g – 2025 User Guide

Choose gesture or button navigation based on what feels natural. Set Do Not Disturb or other available modes around when you want calls and alerts to come through, and tune notification behavior to reduce interruptions. Display and accessibility options should suit the person using the phone—there is no single configuration that is right for every Moto G owner. Check storage compatibility before buying a microSD card
Motorola’s moto g – 2025 guide says that model supports an optional microSD card up to 128 GB, suitable for portable storage such as photos, videos, and music; it says Class 2, 4, or 6 is sufficient. This capacity and compatibility are specific to that model, not the Moto G family as a whole. Verify the exact model and regional variant before buying a card. Motorola moto g – 2025 User Guide
