Start with the display and your phone’s battery-use list: lower brightness, shorten screen timeout, then check which apps or features are actually draining power. These changes can improve time between charges without turning off calls, messages, or other essential functions. Use background restrictions and Battery Saver selectively, because they can delay notifications and updates.
1. Find what is using the battery
On many Moto G phones, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Review the apps and features listed there; Motorola’s instructions describe usage since the last full charge, and some models also offer 24-hour or 14-day views. If one app is using more power than expected, open its battery-management options and adjust that app rather than restricting every app.

Menu names and available views vary by model and software version. Motorola’s battery-life guidance describes the general approach; its moto g STYLUS 5G User Guide is a model-specific example, not a guarantee that every Moto G has identical settings.
2. Reduce screen power use first
- Lower screen brightness to a comfortable level.
- Shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when you stop using the phone.
These adjustments reduce display use without disabling a phone feature. Motorola lists both among its battery-life tips.

3. Use Wi-Fi and wireless connections deliberately
Use Wi-Fi when you are somewhere with a familiar network and coverage. Turn Bluetooth or GPS/location off only when you do not need them. Do not disable a connection that a service you rely on—such as navigation or a connected device—currently needs.
4. Restrict background activity only for the right apps
Some models provide a Manage background apps control with options such as Always allow, Smart use, and Don’t allow. Use the on-device descriptions if your Moto G offers this feature; it is not available on every model.

- Always allow: Reserve this for apps that need reliable background access, such as calling and messaging, time-sensitive email, health and safety apps, navigation or ride apps, and system-critical functions such as VPNs or backups.
- Smart use: A middle-ground choice for apps whose background activity can be limited without needing immediate updates.
- Don’t allow: Use only for apps that can wait. Notifications, updates, or new content may not arrive until you open the app.
Disabling automatic sync can also delay notifications until you sync manually. Motorola explains these background and sync tradeoffs in its battery-life guidance; keep access enabled wherever delay would matter.

5. Enable Adaptive Battery if your phone offers it
Adaptive Battery can reduce background activity for apps you use infrequently and adapt based on your usage. The setting is not available on every Moto G. If it appears under your battery settings, its on-device description can help you decide whether it suits your use.

6. Use Battery Saver when you need extra runtime
Motorola describes Battery Saver as a way to conserve charge by delaying app refresh and limiting background activity. On supported models, it may also reduce refresh rate, enable Dark theme, or stop location use while the screen is off. Those changes can affect how promptly apps update and how some functions behave, so check the explanation shown on your phone before enabling it.
To find the control, look under Settings > Battery for Battery Saver or a similarly named option. Some models allow scheduling; choose a schedule that leaves time-critical functions available when you need them. For details on behavior and model caveats, see Motorola’s Battery Saver mode guidance.

7. Cut back on heavy use away from a charger
Recording or watching video, listening to music, taking pictures, and using animated wallpaper can consume substantial power. When you need the phone to last longer, reducing these activities may help without changing notification or sync settings.
8. Consider optimized charging for battery health
If available, optimized charging limits the time the battery spends above 80% to reduce battery stress and support long-term battery health. It is not a promise of more runtime from the current charge, and it is not offered on every Moto G. Check the battery settings on your phone for the option and its explanation. Motorola describes it in its battery-life guidance.

Why the settings differ between Moto G models
“Moto G” covers many generations and software versions. A support page or guide for one model may show different menu paths or features from another. Follow the equivalent setting shown on your phone; if a feature such as background-app management, Adaptive Battery, or optimized charging is missing, it may not be supported on that model or software version. Motorola’s cited guidance does not quantify how many extra hours or what percentage of runtime these steps will provide.
