Set risk from both your willingness and financial ability to tolerate a decline, set the time horizon from the date the money is needed (including earlier withdrawals), and select a concrete goal such as retirement, a home purchase, education, or an emergency reserve.
An automated recommendation is only as reliable as the information behind it. Before accepting one, verify that the questionnaire captures your complete financial situation, inspect the proposed investments and costs, and confirm how the service handles rebalancing, taxes, and market declines.

The three settings at a glance
| Setting | What it should describe | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Risk | Your capacity and willingness to withstand losses and volatility | Could you pay your obligations and stay invested after a substantial decline? |
| Time horizon | The period until this account’s money is needed | What is the exact target date, and will any portion be withdrawn earlier? |
| Investment goal | The specific purpose of this account | Is the money for retirement, a home, education, an emergency reserve, or another defined objective? |
These settings interact. A long horizon can make market volatility easier to tolerate, but it does not make an unsuitable risk level suitable. Likewise, a high income does not justify an aggressive setting if a house deposit is needed next year.

Separate willingness from ability
Investor.gov defines risk tolerance as “your ability and willingness to lose some or all of your original investment in exchange for potentially greater returns.” Both parts matter. You may feel comfortable watching an account fall, yet lack the financial capacity to wait for recovery because you have unstable income, expensive debt, no cash reserve, or a near-term bill. Conversely, you may be able to withstand a loss financially but sell in panic when prices fall; that emotional reaction is also relevant.

Use the lower of your practical capacity and your genuine willingness. A risk questionnaire that asks only how you would feel during a hypothetical loss is incomplete.
Check the financial facts before selecting a label
Prepare this information before starting the questionnaire:
- Income level and how stable it is.
- Debts, interest rates, and required payments.
- Emergency savings and other readily available cash.
- Existing investments, retirement accounts, property, and other assets.
- Expected taxes and the account’s tax status.
- Investing experience and your understanding of market losses.
- Liquidity needs, including planned withdrawals.
- Age, objectives, and any changes you expect in your circumstances.
The SEC staff’s investor-profile guidance identifies these financial situation, assets and debts, tax status, age, time horizon, liquidity needs, risk tolerance, experience, objectives, and goals as relevant factors. If a builder does not let you provide material information, treat its output as a starting illustration rather than a complete recommendation.

Interpret conservative, balanced, and growth carefully
These words are not universal categories. One provider’s “balanced” portfolio may hold a different mix of volatile and defensive assets than another’s. Do not choose a label because it sounds prudent or ambitious; open the portfolio details and see what the label actually means.
| Label commonly shown | What it generally signals | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative | Greater emphasis on limiting fluctuations and preserving near-term capital | How much can still be lost, which assets are used, and whether the expected liquidity matches your deadline |
| Balanced or moderate | A compromise between growth potential and day-to-day volatility | The actual asset mix, diversification, fees, and response to a market decline |
| Growth or aggressive | Greater exposure to assets whose values can fluctuate substantially in pursuit of higher long-term growth | Whether your finances and deadline allow you to remain invested through a large loss |
No label tells you a guaranteed return or a maximum loss. Exact stock-and-bond percentages cannot be selected responsibly without the builder’s methodology, your account type, jurisdiction, complete profile, and goal timeline.
Run a personal loss test
Imagine the account falls sharply soon after you invest. Would you need to sell to pay a bill? Would a sale create a tax problem? Could you continue planned contributions? Would you abandon the strategy because the decline exceeds your comfort? If any answer is unfavorable, lower the risk setting or improve the surrounding financial cushion before investing. This test is more useful than selecting the highest level you believe you could tolerate in theory.

How to set the time horizon
Use the money-needed date, not a generic age assumption
Investor.gov defines time horizon as “the number of months, years, or decades you plan to invest to achieve your financial goal.” Enter the date the account’s money is needed. Include an earlier partial withdrawal, not just the final date when every dollar will be spent.
FINRA cautions that an automated tool may infer a horizon from your age while missing a nearer-term need such as buying a home. Correct an age-based estimate when your account has a specific deadline.
Map each goal to a calendar
| Account purpose | Horizon entry | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Retirement | The planned date you begin withdrawals, with earlier withdrawals included | Use the date this account’s money is needed, which may differ from your intended retirement age. |
| Home purchase | The expected closing or deposit date | Include the possibility that you will need funds before the purchase date for a deposit, inspection, or moving costs. |
| Education | The first tuition payment and later payment dates | One account may have several withdrawal dates; model the earliest material need. |
| Emergency reserve | Immediate or uncertain access | This is a liquidity requirement rather than a distant growth objective. |
Longer horizons can make volatile investments more tolerable because there is more time to recover. Shorter horizons generally call for less volatile choices, since a market decline close to the spending date leaves little time to wait. A long-dated goal can also become short-dated as the deadline approaches, so the setting must be revisited.

Handle multiple deadlines separately
If the same account is intended for a house purchase in three years and retirement in 25 years, one averaged horizon hides the conflict. Create separate goal accounts or model the goals separately where the service permits it. Give the near-term money its own liquidity and risk requirements instead of letting the distant retirement date make the entire balance appear suitable for aggressive investing.
How to select the investment-goal setting
State a concrete purpose
Select the option that describes what this account is for: retirement, a home purchase, education, an emergency reserve, or another defined objective. The goal should explain why the money exists, not merely that you want “growth.” A concrete purpose helps determine the deadline, acceptable liquidity, contribution pattern, and consequences of a loss.
SEC guidance recommends determining whether a robo-adviser is being used for a specific goal or for broad overall needs, and whether it considers debts, savings, real estate, retirement accounts, and other assets. Answer those questions honestly. A builder cannot judge whether an allocation fits your whole situation if you omit accounts or obligations outside its platform.
Best Value
Do not force unlike goals into one selection
Retirement, a house deposit, college costs, and emergency cash have different deadlines and withdrawal patterns. If a builder offers only one goal field, use the account for one dominant purpose and document the others separately. Combining goals can produce a portfolio that is too volatile for the earliest need or too cautious for the longest one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can an AI portfolio builder choose the right allocation for you?
It can produce a recommendation from the information you enter, but it cannot independently discover missing facts or guarantee that the result fits your life. The SEC’s 2017 Investor Bulletin says that robo-advisers generally collect goals, investment horizon, income, other assets, and risk tolerance through an online questionnaire. If the questions are incomplete, ambiguous, or based on predetermined categories, the output inherits those limitations.
FINRA warns that an automated tool may ask questions that are “over-generalized, ambiguous, misleading, or designed to fit you into the tool’s predetermined options.” Treat a polished explanation as an output to evaluate, not proof that the allocation is correct. No general article can supply a universal percentage allocation: the appropriate mix depends on the named builder, your jurisdiction, account type, complete financial profile, and timeline.

- Define the account. Write down the goal, target date, expected contributions, planned withdrawals, and the minimum amount that must remain accessible. If you cannot state these items, pause before choosing a setting.
- Check the questionnaire. Confirm that it asks about income, assets, debts, taxes, investing experience, other holdings, liquidity needs, objectives, and risk tolerance. Omitted information can make an automated output unsuitable.
- Inspect the portfolio. Identify every asset class and fund, the number and type of funds, management fees, underlying fund expenses, account costs, tax treatment, and any cash allocation. Ask how the service develops its recommendation, handles market declines, and rebalances.
- Verify the firm. In the United States, use Investor.gov’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure resources to check registration and disciplinary history before opening an account. Registration rules and databases differ outside the United States, so use the relevant regulator in your jurisdiction.
- Set a review trigger. Revisit the inputs after a major change in your goal, deadline, income, debt, liquidity, or risk tolerance. Also check whether asset growth has caused the portfolio to drift from its intended allocation; Investor.gov notes that differing performance can require rebalancing.
How to compare two AI portfolio builders
Compare the services on the same account facts and record the answers. A lower headline fee does not compensate for a questionnaire that omits a crucial deadline or for costs hidden in underlying funds.
| Comparison axis | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Questionnaire completeness | Clear, specific questions covering financial situation, experience, objectives, debts, taxes, liquidity, and risk. |
| Goal and deadline handling | Separate goals, exact target dates, partial withdrawals, and changing horizons rather than one age-based estimate. |
| Portfolio construction | Understandable asset classes, diversification, fund selection, and the reason each holding is included. |
| Fees | Advisory charges plus underlying fund expenses and any account or transaction costs. |
| Rebalancing and volatility controls | When rebalancing occurs, whether you are notified, and how the service responds during market declines. |
| Tax and account support | Available account types, tax treatment, and whether the tool considers relevant tax constraints. |
| Human access | Whether a qualified person can explain an answer or review unusual circumstances. |
| Regulatory record | Registration status and disciplinary history in the jurisdiction where you live. |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Accepting the default: Re-read every question and replace assumptions with your actual deadline, withdrawals, and financial facts.
- Choosing growth because the goal is important: Importance does not increase your ability to absorb a loss. Match risk to capacity and timing.
- Using one horizon for every objective: Separate accounts or model each goal so the earliest cash need is not exposed to an unsuitable strategy.
- Ignoring liquidity: Keep emergency and near-term spending needs distinct from long-term investment money.
- Looking only at the headline fee: Add advisory, account, and underlying fund expenses before comparing services.
- Failing to update: A new job, debt, inheritance, marriage, approaching tuition bill, or changed retirement date can invalidate earlier answers.
- Assuming automation removes responsibility: Read disclosures, verify the firm, and understand the recommendation before funding the account.
When additional help is appropriate
Consider speaking with a regulated financial professional when you have several competing goals, substantial debt, concentrated assets, complex taxes, an uncertain income stream, or a deadline that cannot move. Professional advice does not replace checking the builder; it adds context the automated questionnaire may not capture. In every case, keep your own written record of the goal, date, cash requirements, and assumptions used.
What to remember
Risk describes the loss you can both withstand financially and tolerate emotionally. The time horizon is the date this account’s money is needed, including earlier withdrawals. The investment goal is the concrete purpose of the account. Enter those facts accurately, challenge vague labels, inspect the recommendation and costs, verify the provider, and update the settings whenever your circumstances change.
