Which Request Is Slowing Down WooCommerce Checkout?

Pinpoint where WooCommerce checkout stalls: identify the checkout implementation, measure the request tied to the pause, and correlate it with logs and server-side evidence before changing plugins or hosting.

If WooCommerce checkout is slow, identify the stage and request where the pause occurs before changing plugins, upgrading hosting, or blaming the payment gateway. Reproduce one specific checkout action, measure the browser’s requests, then match the delay to the checkout flow. The documented sequence below applies to the Checkout Block; shortcode or classic checkout may behave differently.

First identify your checkout and the action that stalls

“Checkout is slow” describes a symptom, not a cause. The delay might happen while the page loads, after an address change, during shipping or coupon recalculation, before order submission, while the server processes the order, or during the response or redirect. WooCommerce’s documented checkout flow describes the Checkout Block, so first establish whether your store uses that implementation or shortcode/classic checkout. Don’t assume their request sequences are identical.

For a useful comparison, reproduce the same action with the same checkout implementation, cart, shipping and payment methods, browser, and device. If practical, use a staging copy. Record your WooCommerce and gateway versions and the precise action immediately before the stall: initial load, address entry, shipping selection, coupon application, or Place Order. Shipping-rate and coupon changes can trigger recalculation, making the preceding action important context. WooCommerce documents the Checkout Store status and recalculation triggers.

Measure the browser request where the pause occurs

  1. Open developer tools before reproducing the issue. Select the Network panel and enable the option to preserve the request log, if your browser provides it.
  2. Repeat the exact action. Note when you perform it and whether the checkout interface changes, shows an error, or keeps spinning.
  3. Find the request that aligns with the pause. Compare its start and end times with the visible stall. Look for a request that remains pending or takes unusually long relative to the same flow when it succeeds.
  4. Record the evidence. Capture the request URL or path, method, status, response, and timing. Note the payment method and preceding action as well.

There is no universal latency threshold in the WooCommerce documentation cited here. A raw time is meaningful only in context: compare like-for-like attempts rather than treating results from different devices, networks, carts, or checkout implementations as controlled tests. Browser timing shows where time is spent; on its own, it does not prove which plugin or provider is responsible.

Use the Checkout Block sequence to choose what to investigate

In the Checkout Block, order submission does not begin with the server’s checkout request. The flow first runs validation at before_processing. Payment extensions can run event listeners before the Checkout Processor sends the server processing request to the Store API /checkout endpoint. WooCommerce’s processing documentation describes that sequence; its Checkout flow and events reference describes the flow’s states and errors.

Where the pause appears What to investigate next
Before a checkout processing request appears Check whether client-side validation or a payment extension’s listener is delaying submission. This is a hypothesis to test, not proof of a faulty extension.
During the Store API /checkout request Investigate server-side order processing, gateway work, and any external calls made during processing. Correlate the browser timing with server evidence.
After the request returns Inspect the response and the subsequent checkout state, including any error or redirect, to determine what is delaying completion.
After an address, shipping, or coupon change Identify the recalculation-related request and check whether the stall occurs during that update rather than order submission.

The documented sequence is specific to the Checkout Block. With shortcode/classic checkout, identify the implementation and consult the behavior documented for the gateway and checkout extensions you actually use; do not map its requests onto the Block flow by assumption. WooCommerce’s payment method integration documentation explains the client- and server-side roles of payment integrations.

Correlate the request with WooCommerce and WordPress evidence

Check WooCommerce logs

Open WooCommerce > Status > Logs and inspect entries around the time of your reproduction. Check relevant gateway or extension log settings as well. WooCommerce identifies logs as useful for troubleshooting unexpected API values and broken application state. A missing log entry does not establish that no delay occurred: the browser request may still be slow without producing a relevant log. See WooCommerce’s logging documentation.

Inspect WordPress-side work when the evidence points there

If the slow request or its server timing suggests WordPress-side processing, WooCommerce identifies the Query Monitor plugin as a debugging resource. It can help inspect database queries, PHP errors, AJAX/REST requests, hooks and actions, enqueued scripts and styles, and HTTP API calls. Use the relevant evidence to narrow down a slow query, hook, or outbound call. Query Monitor does not replace the browser’s Network panel: measure the request there first, then use server-side tools to investigate what may have prolonged it. See WooCommerce’s debugging resources.

Test a suspected cause without changing several things at once

  1. In staging, repeat the same checkout with the affected payment method and, if available, another supported method. Keep the cart and preceding action constant.
  2. If evidence points to an extension or customization, disable only the suspected item in staging and repeat the same test. Change one variable at a time so the comparison remains interpretable.
  3. Compare the request identity, timing, response, payment method, and relevant logs or WordPress-side evidence across attempts.
  4. Once you have identified a specific slow request or server operation, share that evidence with the relevant gateway or extension author, or your host if the evidence indicates a host-level problem.

A payment method that stalls while another succeeds narrows the investigation, but does not alone establish fault: the methods may follow different processing paths. Avoid disabling checkout or payment components on a live store without a safe plan.
