Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most newcomers, buy Rayman Legends. It is the clearest modern 2D starting point, is sold on more platforms than the newer release, and supports local co-op for up to four players. Choose Rayman Legends Retold instead if you specifically want the newest presentation, its new content and bundled Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition, and you own one of its newer supported platforms.
You do not need to buy the games in story order. The right first game depends on whether you want modern 2D platforming, classic 3D exploration, the original game’s preservation extras, or a boxed collector-style package.

What kind of Rayman game do you want?
Ubisoft created Rayman at Ubisoft Montpellier in 1995. The franchise has since appeared in more than 40 games across more than 20 platforms, but those games do not form a single purchase sequence that a new player must follow. They fall into a few useful categories:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Modern 2D platforming: Rayman Legends and Rayman Origins focus on side-scrolling movement through colorful worlds, with boss encounters and cooperative play.
- Classic 3D platforming: Rayman 2 and Rayman 3 use three-dimensional exploration and are the natural choices if you want the older 3D branch of the series.
- Original-game preservation: Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition collects five versions of the first game and adds archival material and more than 120 extra levels.
- Newest presentation: Rayman Legends Retold reworks the modern 2D game with new visuals, a retold story, additional content and Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition.
That means “best” is not one universal ranking. It is a choice between movement styles, hardware generations, multiplayer needs and how much historical material you want with the game.

Why Rayman Legends is the best default choice
A modern 2D game without a hardware gamble
Rayman Legends is the most practical recommendation when you do not already know which branch of the series you prefer. Ubisoft lists it for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. That unusually broad spread makes it easier to play on hardware you already own rather than buying a console for one game.
Its setting is the colorful Glade of Dreams, and Ubisoft highlights platforming stages, boss fights and local co-op. The game therefore demonstrates the central 2D Rayman formula in one package: movement through distinct worlds, increasingly demanding obstacles and set-piece encounters, with another player able to join on the same system.
Who should choose it
- You want a straightforward side-scrolling platformer rather than 3D exploration.
- You are buying for a household and need couch co-op for as many as four players.
- You use an older or current system covered by the broad platform list.
- You want a complete modern entry without waiting for a newer edition’s availability date to settle.
What its release date tells you
Ubisoft lists August 29, 2013 as the release date. That date makes Legends an established release rather than an upcoming product, but it does not make the game a historical-only purchase: it remains the most flexible first buy when platform compatibility and local multiplayer matter.

When Rayman Legends Retold is the better first purchase
What the Retold package changes
Ubisoft describes Rayman Legends Retold as a reimagining with new visuals and a retold story. It also adds a new realm and stages, supports solo play or couch co-op for up to four people, and bundles Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition. In practical terms, one purchase is intended to give a newcomer the modern Legends experience and an upgraded version of its predecessor.
The included Origins upgrade is not just a name change. Ubisoft’s announcement describes 4K output, 60 frames per second, additional collectibles and rewards, haptic features and quality-of-life improvements. Those extras make Retold the more comprehensive package if you want both 2D games and are comfortable buying on newer hardware.
Supported platforms
The current Retold product listing names PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, GeForce Now and Blacknut. That is a newer-platform list than the original Legends release, so check your exact system before paying. A console owner on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 should not assume Retold is available there simply because Legends is.

The date needs verification
There is a conflicting date in Ubisoft’s own current materials. A June 2, 2026 news announcement said Retold was coming October 1, while the current product page lists December 3, 2026. As of October 20, 2026, treat December 3, 2026 as the storefront date, but verify the retailer’s delivery or release date immediately before ordering. This is especially important for a physical Launch Edition or a purchase made close to either date.

Choose Retold when at least one of these is true:
- You own a supported newer platform and want the freshest visual presentation.
- You want Legends and an enhanced Origins in one package.
- You will use four-player couch co-op and prefer the newer release’s presentation.
- You are buying a physical Launch Edition and value the included map, lithographs and slipcase.
Choose the original Legends instead when you need one of its older platforms, want to play now without a date conflict, or are interested primarily in the established game rather than the Retold additions.
Should you start with Origins or Legends?
Pick Origins first for the earlier 2D design
Rayman Origins is the predecessor to Legends. It is the right first choice when your interest is seeing how the modern 2D branch began, rather than starting with the later entry. There is no requirement to know its story before playing Legends, so this is a preference decision, not a continuity obligation.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Pick Legends first for the broadest practical fit
Legends is usually easier to recommend to an unknown buyer because Ubisoft lists it on more generations of hardware and explicitly highlights four-player local co-op. If two games are otherwise equally appealing, those compatibility and multiplayer advantages make it the lower-risk purchase.
Pick Origins: Enhanced Edition through Retold for the upgraded version
The Enhanced Edition is the version to seek if you want the predecessor with the announced technical and quality-of-life additions: 4K, 60 frames per second, collectibles, rewards, haptic features and other usability changes. It is bundled with Retold rather than presented here as a separate reason to buy an unrelated package.
When Rayman 2 or Rayman 3 should come first
Do not buy Legends simply because it is newer if what you really want is classic 3D platforming. Rayman 2 and Rayman 3 are the relevant starting points for that branch, and Ubisoft currently lists both as purchasable standard editions.

Choose this route if you want
- Three-dimensional movement and exploration instead of side-scrolling stages.
- A snapshot of Rayman’s earlier 3D era.
- To compare the series’ classic 3D identity with its later 2D revival.
The available evidence does not establish a required order between the two, a definitive difficulty ranking or a universal winner. Treat them as separate classic 3D options: choose the one whose setting, edition or platform listing appeals to you, then move to the other if you want the rest of that era.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is in Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition?
This edition is aimed at preservation-minded buyers rather than someone seeking the simplest introduction to modern platforming. Ubisoft’s 2026 product page describes five versions of the original game, more than 120 extra levels and an interactive documentary.
Why it is a good first purchase for some players
- You want to study how the original game appeared across its versions.
- You value archival context as much as the game itself.
- You want a large amount of additional level content tied to the original release.
Why it is not the default recommendation
Its appeal is historical breadth, not the broad modern 2D entry point or the newer Retold presentation. If your main question is “Which Rayman game feels like a contemporary couch-co-op platformer?”, start with Legends or Retold instead.

Choose by platform and multiplayer needs
| Your situation | Most sensible first buy | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 or Wii U | Rayman Legends | Those platforms are listed for the established release; Retold’s current list does not include them. |
| PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2 | Retold if its release timing works; otherwise Legends where available | Retold’s current listing targets these newer systems and adds the enhanced package. |
| Four people playing on one screen | Rayman Legends or Retold | Ubisoft describes local or couch co-op for up to four players in both modern options. |
| Cloud play | Retold, subject to service availability | The current product listing names GeForce Now and Blacknut; check that your account and region can access the game. |
| Physical collector-style purchase | Retold Launch Edition | The package includes the game, Origins: Enhanced Edition, printed map, three lithographs and a slipcase. |
| Original-game preservation | Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition | Five versions, 120-plus extra levels and an interactive documentary are the defining extras. |
How to buy without choosing the wrong edition
- Identify your exact hardware. Write down the platform and generation, not just the console family. The original Legends and Retold have different support lists.
- Decide between 2D and 3D. Buy Legends, Retold or Origins for the modern 2D branch; choose Rayman 2 or Rayman 3 for classic 3D.
- Set your multiplayer requirement. If local play for four people matters, confirm that the listing describes local or couch co-op, rather than assuming every Rayman release has the same mode.
- Check whether you want one game or a bundle. Retold includes Origins: Enhanced Edition; the Launch Edition adds physical collectibles. The 30th Anniversary Edition instead prioritizes versions of the original and documentary content.
- Verify the date and edition name at checkout. Retold has conflicting dates in Ubisoft materials: October 1 in the June 2 announcement and December 3 on the current product page. Confirm the retailer’s date and that the listing says the edition you intend to buy.
- Check region and service access for cloud play. GeForce Now and Blacknut appear on the current Retold listing, but catalog availability can vary by account and region.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming story order is mandatory: the series does not require a strict purchase sequence for a newcomer.
- Confusing platform generations: broad availability for Legends does not automatically carry over to Retold.
- Buying the collector package for the wrong reason: the Launch Edition’s map, lithographs and slipcase are physical extras; they do not change the basic recommendation for a player who only wants the game.
- Choosing the anniversary edition when you want modern 2D co-op: its defining value is preservation and archival material.
- Assuming a release date is settled: check the latest retailer listing because Ubisoft’s announcement and product page currently disagree.
Final decision
Buy Rayman Legends first if you want the most dependable introduction: modern 2D platforming, broad hardware support and up to four-player local co-op. Buy Rayman Legends Retold if you have compatible newer hardware and want the newest presentation, new realm and stages, retold story and included Origins: Enhanced Edition; verify its December 3, 2026 storefront date before ordering. Choose Rayman Origins for the predecessor, Rayman 2 or Rayman 3 for classic 3D, and the 30th Anniversary Edition for preservation extras.
