These PS5 availability settings make a connection possible; they do not improve the quality of a session that is already connected.
Enable Remote Play on the PS5
On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play for the user who will play. PlayStation says this normally needs to be enabled only the first time, unless the setting is later changed. It can be configured per user. PlayStation’s Portal Remote Play guide and its PS5 Remote Play setup guide document the setup.

The PS5 must be connected to the internet, Portal and PS5 must use the same account, and PlayStation advises keeping PS5 system software up to date.

If you want Portal to connect while the PS5 is resting, enable both network features on the console:

- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Turn on Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
These options keep the console reachable and allow it to wake over the network. They are not image-quality or performance switches for a Remote Play session already underway. PlayStation’s Portal guide and US Remote Play instructions give the same Rest Mode requirements.
Use PlayStation’s recommended network setup
The network path matters more to streaming than changing unrelated PS5 display settings. PlayStation recommends these arrangements for Portal:

- Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet. If you need a cable, PlayStation recommends a wired connection but does not specify a cable category or length.
- Connect Portal over 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- If the PS5 also uses Wi-Fi, put it and Portal on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Disable router band steering if possible. Router controls differ, so check the router’s own settings or documentation for the relevant option.
PlayStation recommends a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience. This is the vendor’s recommendation, not a measured threshold or guarantee that a speed test alone will ensure smooth play. The Portal guide also notes that public Wi-Fi quality may be outside your control.

The maximum-resolution control is on Portal, not in a PS5 video-output menu. Open Portal’s quick menu and select Max Resolution. PlayStation’s current US accessories guide lists 1080p High Quality and 1080p Standard as the maximum video-quality options and says Remote Play quality adjusts automatically according to internet quality. PlayStation’s US Portal guide covers the setting.

PlayStation’s Portal system update notes identify 1080p High Quality as an option for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. Available choices can vary with software version, so check the current Portal menu and Portal system software notes. The cited guidance does not promise that lowering the maximum resolution will fix a weak or unstable connection.

- Check that Remote Play is enabled for the intended PS5 user and that both devices use the same account.
- If the PS5 is in Rest Mode, confirm both network wake options are enabled.
- If Portal has not connected for a while, PlayStation recommends testing the connection near the console before trying remotely from outside the home.
If the console still cannot be found, connect Portal and PS5 to the same network and pair them manually: on PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play > Pair Device, then enter the displayed number on the connecting device. PlayStation documents this procedure in its Remote Play setup instructions.

Do you need to change PS5 resolution settings?
PlayStation’s cited instructions point to Portal’s Max Resolution menu for the Remote Play stream cap. They do not recommend changing PS5 output resolution as a Remote Play fix. Start with Remote Play availability, Rest Mode network access, and the connection setup instead.
