See if the cover screen responds, inspect the phone and charging accessories, then try the restart instructions for your exact model. If the inner screen still will not work, or the phone remains unresponsive in Safe mode, contact Samsung support rather than repeatedly resetting it or attempting a hinge repair.
Check what still responds
Before changing settings, note what happens when you unfold the phone. Does the cover display light up or respond? Does the phone vibrate or ring? Is the inner screen completely black, flickering, or showing an image without responding to touch?

These observations help distinguish a phone that appears entirely unresponsive from one with an inner-screen problem, but they do not prove that a particular component has failed. Share them with a technician if you need service.
Inspect the phone and charging setup
- Look for visible damage to the phone, hinge, charger, and USB cable. Do not press on the inner display or try to force or manipulate the hinge.
- If the battery may be depleted, try a known-good compatible charger and cable for your exact model.
- If the phone has visible damage or the problem began after a drop or liquid exposure, arrange support instead of treating charging or repeated restarts as a repair.
Samsung’s general black-screen guidance recommends checking the charger and USB cable. That check may help if the phone has lost power; it will not fix a damaged hinge or display.

Force-restart it using the instructions for your model
Button combinations and hold times can differ by model and by troubleshooting context, so check the user manual for your Galaxy Z Flip generation. Do not assume one timing applies to every Z Flip.
Galaxy Z Flip6: frozen and unresponsive
The Galaxy Z Flip6 user manual says to hold the Side button and Volume Down button together for more than seven seconds to restart a frozen, unresponsive device. This instruction is specific to the Z Flip6; check your own model’s manual before using it on another generation.

Samsung’s general blank-screen guidance
For a blank or black Galaxy screen, Samsung Support gives a different instruction: “You can also try forcing a restart by pressing and holding the Power and Volume down buttons for 20 seconds, and then charging the device for at least one hour.” This is general Galaxy black-screen guidance, not a universal Z Flip-specific restart rule. Follow the instructions for your exact model where they differ.

Use Safe mode to check for an app-related issue
If you can operate the phone, start it in Safe mode using Samsung’s instructions for your model. Safe mode runs core applications and can help show whether a downloaded app may be contributing to the problem. Samsung explains the process in its guide to a Galaxy device that will not start or is in a boot loop.

- If the problem stops in Safe mode: a downloaded app may be involved. Consider uninstalling recently added apps one at a time, checking whether the issue returns after each change.
- If the problem persists in Safe mode: Samsung says hardware is more likely and advises arranging service. Safe mode is a diagnostic step; it cannot repair a damaged display or hinge.
When to contact Samsung support
Seek service if the inner screen remains black or behaves abnormally after the appropriate checks and model-specific restart, or if the problem persists in Safe mode. Contact Samsung for guidance specific to your model and country. Its support pages provide model documentation and repair-guide listings, including pages for the Galaxy Z Flip7 and Galaxy Z Flip5. The available support options may depend on region and model; a repair-guide listing is not a recommendation to open or repair the phone yourself.
