For a sharper PS5 picture, first make sure the console is outputting the best resolution your display supports. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, check Current Video Output Signal, and usually leave Resolution on Automatic. Other options affect HDR rendering, motion, or signal compatibility—not sharpness in every game.
Start with resolution and the display signal
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, check Current Video Output Signal to see what the PS5 is sending to the display. Leave Resolution on Automatic unless you have a specific compatibility reason to select another supported output. Sony says the console detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. A 4K signal requires a compatible 4K screen and 4K output; Sony describes 4K as almost four times the definition of 1080p HD.

If you use a compatible 1440p monitor and want to check whether the full combination of features works, choose Test 1440p Output. The test checks SDR and HDR, 60 Hz and 120 Hz, and VRR combinations.

On an HDR-capable display, open Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen prompts. HDR affects brightness range and how supported content is rendered; it is not a resolution setting or a guaranteed sharpness boost.

Under HDR output behavior, On When Supported keeps non-HDR games and apps in SDR. Always On converts non-HDR content to HDR output as well. Choose based on whether you want the console to preserve SDR for content that was not made for HDR.
Leave RGB Range alone unless the signal is wrong
Do not change RGB Range as a routine picture-enhancement tweak. Sony says to change it only when an HDMI device does not send RGB range information correctly. A mismatch can affect how the image appears, but selecting a different range without a signal problem is not a general sharpness fix.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Deep Color Output enables smooth image rendering; Sony does not describe it as a universal sharpness adjustment. Leave it alone unless you are addressing a specific display-compatibility issue.

Use 120 Hz and VRR for supported games and screens
120 Hz Output is useful only when both the display and the game support a 120 Hz frame rate. VRR adjusts the display’s refresh rate in real time when the TV and game support it. These features primarily concern motion and frame pacing, not extra detail in a still image. Sony notes that results vary by TV; applying VRR to unsupported games may help stabilize frame rate, but turn it off if you encounter unexpected behavior. If 120 Hz causes output problems, disable it.

Treat Video Transfer Rate as a flicker fix
Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic unless the screen flickers and you need to troubleshoot a signal issue. Sony recommends trying -1 or -2 to limit output; these settings can improve picture quality in that circumstance, but they restrict available output formats.
| Setting | Effect on output |
|---|---|
| -1 | Limits 4K 120 Hz and some 4K 50/60 Hz RGB or YUV444 Deep Color output. |
| -2 | Applies greater restrictions, including limiting 4K 50/60 Hz RGB or YUV444; 4K at 50/60 Hz uses YUV420. |
Try -1 first and check whether the flicker stops before moving to -2. Because these options trade format availability for signal stability, they are not recommended as everyday sharpness presets.

Check PSSR only on supported console models and games
Enhance PSSR Image Quality is available only on PS5 consoles in the CFI-7000 model group, and it helps in certain games that support PSSR. It is not a setting found on every PS5 or a universal improvement for all games. Sony says to turn it off if unexpected behavior occurs.
When sharper output is unavailable or unstable
Display capability, game support, and signal stability all matter: a console cannot output a mode the screen does not support, and a game must support features such as HDR, 120 Hz, VRR, or PSSR to use them. For 4K 120 Hz problems, Sony recommends checking the TV firmware, the selected HDMI input, any receiver or other device between the console and screen, and the cable. A direct connection can help isolate an intermediary-device issue. If a cable is the obstacle, Sony lists the included cable or a suitably rated Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable among the checks; buying a cable will not sharpen a picture when the current signal is already stable.
