The documented list is 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21, 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50, 4.51, 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, 5.50, 6.00, 6.02, 6.50, 7.00, 7.01, 7.20, 7.40, 7.60 and 7.61. The project’s FAQ says firmware 8.00 and newer will not be supported by its loader.
That is the Linux-loader matrix, not a guarantee that every listed console can be jailbroken with the same exploit. A separate umtx2 repository documents a WebKit jailbreak for firmware 1.00–5.50, while the upstream loader does not identify that exploit as a universal entry point for every 6.xx and 7.xx release. An unofficial fork claims 13.60 support, including PS5 Pro, but that claim is separate from upstream support.

Upstream PS5 Linux firmware compatibility
The upstream ps5-linux README says the project is supported on PS5 Phat and Slim consoles running the following firmware versions. The versions are grouped exactly as documented; an unlisted version should not be assumed compatible simply because it falls numerically between two listed releases.
| Firmware versions | Upstream Linux-loader status | M.2 support |
|---|---|---|
| 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21 | Supported | No M.2 support |
| 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50, 4.51 | Supported | M.2 supported |
| 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, 5.50 | Supported | M.2 supported |
| 6.00, 6.02, 6.50 | Supported | M.2 supported |
| 7.00, 7.01, 7.20, 7.40, 7.60, 7.61 | Supported | M.2 supported |
| 8.00 and higher | Upstream FAQ says no | Not applicable |
The list is a set of project-documented compatibility claims. It is not an independently measured success rate, and the project documentation does not provide a peer-reviewed percentage of consoles that boot Linux successfully.

What “supports Linux” actually means
Loader compatibility is one part of the chain
A firmware appearing in the ps5-linux table means the project has documented loader support for that release. Booting Linux also depends on a usable jailbreak or exploit path, the console model, storage hardware and the image or boot files being used. Those dependencies should be checked separately rather than treating the table as a universal jailbreak promise.
Model coverage in the upstream wording
The README’s exact wording limits upstream support to PS5 Phat and Slim systems. It does not extend that statement to PS5 Pro. A Pro claim therefore needs its own documentation; it should not be inferred from a Phat or Slim result.
Can a PS5 on firmware 4.03, 4.51 or 7.61 run Linux?
Firmware 4.03
Yes, 4.03 is explicitly listed as supported by the upstream Linux loader. It belongs to the 4.00–4.51 group, which the README marks as having M.2 support. You still need a separately verified exploit entry point for your console and a compatible boot setup.

Firmware 7.61
Yes, 7.61 is the highest version in the upstream compatibility list. It is listed with M.2 support. The list confirms loader compatibility, but the upstream documentation does not say that the 1.00–5.50 umtx2 jailbreak works on 7.61, so exploit availability must be established independently.
Firmware 13.60
Not in the upstream matrix. An unofficial soniciso1 fork claims to add 13.60 support on PS5 Phat, Slim and Pro. That is a fork-specific claim, not upstream ps5-linux support. Treat it as experimental until its code, instructions and results have been independently validated for the exact console model.
What is the highest PS5 firmware supported for Linux?
For the upstream ps5-linux project, the highest listed firmware is 7.61. The upstream FAQ answers the question “Will higher >=8.00 firmwares be supported?” with “No.” Therefore, a PS5 on 8.00 or any higher release is outside the project’s documented loader support.

The unofficial 13.60 fork does not change that upstream answer. If you are deciding whether to preserve a console for Linux, use 7.61 as the upstream ceiling and treat 13.60 only as a separate, unverified fork path.

Jailbreak availability versus Linux-loader compatibility
The documented umtx2 range
The idlesauce/umtx2 repository describes a WebKit-based PS5 jailbreak supporting firmware 1.00–5.50. That range overlaps the lower portion of the Linux-loader list: 3.xx, 4.xx and 5.xx entries are covered by the stated jailbreak range, subject to the exploit’s own requirements and your console’s condition.
Why 6.xx and 7.xx need separate checking
The upstream Linux README lists 6.00, 6.02, 6.50, 7.00, 7.01, 7.20, 7.40, 7.60 and 7.61, but it does not identify umtx2 as the universal entry point for those releases. A loader entry alone is not proof that a public exploit chain exists for every version. Before buying hardware or changing firmware, verify an exploit path specifically documented for the exact release and model.
Older 1.xx and 2.xx consoles
The upstream FAQ says support for 1.xx and 2.xx may be added in the future but is not prioritized. They are therefore not part of the current upstream Linux support list, even though umtx2 describes a jailbreak range beginning at 1.00.

Do you need an M.2 SSD?
No, an M.2 SSD is not universally required. The upstream setup uses USB storage, and the README marks M.2 support by firmware group. The important exception is 3.xx: a 3.xx PS5 cannot boot with an M.2 attached.

| Firmware group | M.2 choice | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| 3.00–3.21 entries | Not supported | Remove or do not install an M.2 when booting the documented Linux setup. |
| 4.00–4.51 entries | Supported | An optional PS5-compatible M.2 can be used, but USB storage is still part of the documented setup. |
| 5.00–5.50 entries | Supported | M.2 is optional rather than a prerequisite. |
| 6.00–7.61 entries | Supported | M.2 is available according to the loader documentation, subject to the exact boot procedure. |
“M.2 supported” does not mean every drive, enclosure or partition layout will work. Use hardware that meets the console’s compatibility requirements and follow the project’s current boot instructions.
Hardware required for the documented setup
The upstream README lists the following equipment:
- USB storage: at least 64GB. The project suggests an external SSD as an ideal option, but a USB drive meeting the capacity requirement is the stated minimum.
- USB keyboard and mouse: required for the documented Linux interaction.
- PS5-compatible M.2 SSD: optional on the groups marked with M.2 support and unsuitable for booting a 3.xx console, which cannot boot with an M.2 attached.
- USB WLAN adapter: optional.
- Bluetooth dongle: optional.
The 64GB figure is a minimum capacity requirement, not a promise that every 64GB device will have enough usable space after formatting and image files. Keep the drive dedicated to the setup if the project’s instructions require a particular filesystem or layout.
A safe compatibility-check workflow
- Record the exact system software version. On the PS5, open Settings, choose System, then System Software, and view the console information. Record every digit; 4.50 and 4.51 are different entries.
- Identify the console model. Note whether it is a Phat or Slim system. Upstream wording covers those models; do not assume PS5 Pro coverage from the upstream table.
- Compare the version with the exact upstream list. Confirm that your release appears verbatim. Do not interpolate an omitted release between two supported numbers.
- Check the exploit path separately. For 1.00–5.50, compare your release with the umtx2 repository’s documented 1.00–5.50 range. For 6.xx or 7.xx, require a separately documented chain rather than assuming umtx2 applies.
- Prevent an accidental update. Do not install a newer system update while preserving a firmware-dependent setup. An update can move the console outside the documented matrix.
- Plan storage around the firmware group. Prepare at least 64GB of USB storage. If the console is on 3.xx, do not attach an M.2 while attempting the documented boot. On later listed groups, treat M.2 as optional.
- Gather input devices. Connect the USB keyboard and mouse before booting Linux, and add WLAN or Bluetooth hardware only if your chosen setup needs it.
- Use an image intended for the project’s loader. Verify that the image’s instructions match your firmware, model and storage arrangement before writing it to the USB device.
Which Linux distributions have bootable images?
The ps5-linux-image release page lists bootable images for Ubuntu, Arch, CachyOS, Fedora, Proxmox VE and Debian. The latest listed image in that release stream was built on 2026-08-29. Image releases and firmware exploits are separate layers: publishing an image does not add a new firmware to the loader matrix and does not establish an exploit for an otherwise unsupported console.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose an image only after confirming loader and exploit compatibility. A newer distribution image may contain useful drivers or fixes, but it cannot make an 8.00-or-newer console supported by the upstream loader.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Assuming every firmware between two entries works
The upstream list is selective. For example, 4.01, 5.01, 6.01 and 7.50 are not listed in the documented groups. Unless a project update explicitly adds one of those versions, treat it as unconfirmed rather than automatically supported.
Equating a jailbreak with Linux boot support
A WebKit jailbreak can provide an entry point without guaranteeing that the Linux loader works on that release. Check both repositories and keep their version ranges distinct.
Leaving an M.2 installed on 3.xx
The README specifically states that a 3.xx PS5 cannot boot with an M.2 attached. Remove the drive before troubleshooting a failed 3.xx boot; adding different M.2 hardware will not solve that firmware limitation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReading a fork claim as an upstream release
Forks can change compatibility claims independently of the main project. Label 13.60 as an unofficial soniciso1 fork claim and verify its code and procedures before relying on it.
Expecting a guaranteed result
No independently measured compatibility percentage or peer-reviewed success-rate statistic is provided in the project documentation. A listed version means documented project support, not a guarantee for every console, storage device or boot attempt.
