No global PS5 display setting is documented as switching Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on or changing its reconstruction quality. QSSR is a graphics option in games that support it; the console’s display settings control the video signal sent to your screen and how that signal is presented. Sony has not published a resolution, HDR, refresh-rate, colour, or HDMI-transfer setting as a QSSR quality control.
Where QSSR is controlled
QSSR support and any in-game mode selection belong to a supported game, not a system-wide PS5 display menu. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games patched to offer QSSR. Sony said the technology would be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but did not confirm additional titles or an adoption schedule. Check that your game supports QSSR before attributing a change in image quality to it. Sony’s QSSR announcement describes the feature as improving image detail and stability, but gives no numerical image-quality or performance measurements.

What PS5 display settings do affect
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to review the output signal. Sony says the PS5 detects the connected screen’s capabilities and selects the highest supported resolution when Resolution is set to Automatic. These settings can affect compatibility, colour, brightness, refresh behaviour, or signal stability; Sony does not document them as controls for QSSR’s internal upscaling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Setting | What it changes | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | The output resolution, limited by the display’s supported modes. | Automatic is a sensible starting point. Choosing a higher output resolution is not documented as improving QSSR’s reconstruction. If you use a 1440p display, the PS5 can test SDR and HDR output at 60 Hz and 120 Hz, and VRR output. |
| HDR and Adjust HDR | HDR controls HDR output. “Always On” converts unsupported games and apps to HDR output; “On When Supported” leaves unsupported content in SDR. Adjust HDR fine-tunes brightness for optimized HDR rendering. | Use “On When Supported” if you want unsupported content to remain SDR, and calibrate Adjust HDR for your display. These options affect presentation, not the documented QSSR mode. |
| Deep Colour Output | Sony describes this as enabling smooth image rendering. | It is not identified as a QSSR control. |
| RGB Range | Sets the RGB range used by the HDMI connection. | Sony advises changing it only if the HDMI device does not send RGB range information correctly; it is not a general QSSR tweak. |
| Video Transfer Rate | Limits output signal capability to help address flicker or other signal problems. | Try -1 or -2 only if you are troubleshooting flicker. At -1, 4K 120 Hz and some 4K 50/60 Hz RGB/YUV444 DeepColor modes are limited. At -2, 4K 120 Hz and 4K 50/60 Hz RGB/YUV444 are limited. Some 8K 60 Hz output is also limited on CFI-7000 models. This is a signal troubleshooting setting, not a QSSR control. |
| VRR | Allows refresh rate to adjust in real time on compatible TVs and games; results vary by TV. | It affects refresh behaviour, not QSSR reconstruction. |
| 120 Hz Output | Enables 120 Hz output when both the display and game support it. | It changes output mode and compatibility, not QSSR reconstruction. |
| ALLM | Lets a compatible TV switch to low-latency mode during gameplay. | When VRR output is active, ALLM may remain active even if its own setting is Off. Turn VRR off too if you need to fully disable ALLM. This setting concerns latency, not upscaling. |
Sony’s PS5 screen and video output guide documents these settings and their output effects; it does not identify any of them as a QSSR image-quality control.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Do not confuse QSSR with Enhance PSSR Image Quality
Sony documents an Enhance PSSR Image Quality control for certain PSSR-compatible games. It is on by default and available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. This is a separate PS5 Pro feature associated with PSSR; Sony does not describe it as a QSSR toggle for standard PS5 games.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a display change is worth making
- For a normal setup: leave Resolution on Automatic, then use the HDR option that matches whether you want unsupported content to stay in SDR. Adjust HDR for your screen.
- For washed-out or incorrect levels: do not switch RGB Range as a blanket fix. Sony recommends changing it only when the HDMI device reports the range incorrectly.
- For flicker: first identify it as a signal problem rather than a QSSR issue. Sony recommends trying Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2, bearing in mind the output modes each setting limits.
- For missing 4K 120 Hz or a fallback to 1080p: confirm the display and its firmware support the mode, connect directly to the appropriate HDMI 2.1 input, and check Resolution and Video Transfer Rate. Sony also advises using the supplied PS5 HDMI cable or an Ultra High-Speed cable rated for 4K 120 Hz; there is no need to replace the included cable if it works.
For a 4K 120 Hz connection, Sony’s output troubleshooting guidance covers display support, firmware, cable, HDMI input, Resolution, and Video Transfer Rate checks.
