Choose a laptop by matching its screen and weight to how you carry it, then match its processor and RAM to the applications you use. There is no single best size or specification for everyone: the right configuration also depends on graphics, storage, battery life, ports, software compatibility, and whether the memory can be upgraded.
What size laptop should I buy?
Screen size is measured diagonally, but it is only a rough guide to portability. A bigger display gives you more room to read, edit, or keep windows side by side; a smaller laptop is generally easier to carry. Lenovo suggests considering 14 inches or smaller for maximum portability and notes that 14 inches or larger provides more room for content. Treat that as general guidance, not a hard cutoff: compare the laptop’s actual dimensions and weight before buying. Lenovo’s UK laptop buying guide also notes that larger or higher-resolution displays can use more battery.

Is a 14-inch laptop big enough?
For many people, 14 inches is a useful middle ground between screen workspace and carrying convenience. Whether it is enough depends on what you do: frequent side-by-side work, detailed editing, or long sessions away from an external display may benefit from a larger screen. If you travel often or use a small bag, a smaller, lighter chassis may matter more. Check the exact device dimensions, weight, resolution, and display quality rather than choosing by diagonal measurement alone.
Which laptop processor is right for me?
Start with the programs you intend to run, not a processor tier label or family name. Web browsing, email, and basic office tasks place different demands on a computer than gaming, video editing, or professional applications. The exact processor model matters, and performance depends on several factors, including core count, clock speed, cache, and architecture, as HP’s specification explainer describes.
#1 Best Overall
- FULL HD IPS DISPLAY - Enjoy vibrant, crystal-clear images with 178-degree wide-viewing angles
- AMD RYZEN 3 30 PROCESSOR - Everyday performance you can count on; Multitask, stream, game casually, and edit photos smoothly with responsive power and vibrant HDR visuals
- ENJOY UP TO 14 HOURS AND 15 MINUTES OF BATTERY LIFE - HP Fast Charge restores battery from 0 to 50% in approximately 45 minutes
- AMD RADEON 610M GRAPHICS - Experience smooth entertainment; Built for streaming and multitasking, enjoy realistic visuals and efficient performance for work and play
- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
Microsoft’s laptop buying guide groups recommendations by use case, including students, creators, gamers, and entertainment users. Its listed processor families are not a controlled ranking of performance. Before choosing, look up the precise CPU model in the laptop configuration and check the software maker’s requirements for the applications you rely on. If a program or game specifies a processor requirement, use that rather than assuming a higher-sounding tier will meet it.
How much RAM do I need in a laptop?
RAM (random-access memory) holds data for applications and tasks that are currently active. Microsoft gives 8–16 GB as a general buying range: it says 8 GB can suit light browsing and many basic tasks, and suggests closer to 16 GB for photo or video editing. Its gaming profiles call for higher capacities. These are Microsoft’s recommendations, not universal minimum requirements; check the requirements of your own software and the number of demanding applications you tend to keep open.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Also find out whether the laptop’s RAM is soldered or upgradeable. If it is soldered, you generally cannot add memory later, so the amount you buy is likely to be the amount you keep. Confirm the exact model’s configuration and upgrade options rather than relying on a product-family description.

What other specifications should I check?
Size, processor, and memory are central choices, but a laptop is a complete system. Compare the details that affect your actual work and daily use:

- Graphics: Integrated graphics can be suitable for basic work. Some games and creative applications may require discrete graphics; check the specific application or game requirements.
- Storage: Decide how much space you need for locally stored files, applications, games, and media. Someone who keeps most files in cloud storage may need a different capacity from someone who stores large projects on the laptop. HP’s guide explains broad SSD and HDD trade-offs, but the right choice depends on the exact device and workload.
- Display: Compare resolution and overall display quality as well as size. Lenovo says Full HD is sufficient for daily computing and all but the most demanding game settings; that general advice may not suit every application or preference.
- Battery and ports: Check the exact model’s stated battery information and port selection against how and where you plan to use it. Display size and resolution can affect battery use, so consider them alongside portability.
- Compatibility and upgradeability: Confirm that the operating system supports the applications you need, and check whether RAM or storage can be upgraded if that matters to you.
- Total price: Compare complete configurations, not just processor names. A useful comparison includes the exact CPU and graphics, installed RAM, storage, screen, chassis weight and dimensions, and included operating system.
How to compare laptops for your use
Use the same checklist for each candidate so a prominent processor label does not distract from a poor fit elsewhere.
- List your main applications and tasks. Include games or creative software with specific hardware requirements, plus the everyday tasks you run at the same time.
- Set your portability needs. Decide how much weight and chassis size you are willing to carry. Compare physical dimensions and weight, not screen size alone.
- Choose a workable display. Balance screen workspace, resolution, display quality, and the possibility of connecting an external monitor.
- Match processor, graphics, and RAM to the workload. Check the exact component models and installed memory against the requirements of your software.
- Check storage, battery, ports, and compatibility. Make sure the complete machine supports your files, accessories, operating system, and typical locations of use.
- Verify the exact configuration before buying. Product lines can include different processors, memory amounts, screens, or storage. Confirm the listing for the particular model, including whether memory is upgradeable.
Microsoft’s guide also mentions NPUs and a 40+ trillion operations per second (TOPS) threshold for Copilot+ PCs. That is a capability threshold associated with that category, not a general recommendation that determines whether a laptop is right for your needs.
