Sony places original PlayStation titles in its Classics Catalog, which is available to Premium members (and to Deluxe members in markets that use that name). PlayStation Plus Extra includes the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics, but not the Classics Catalog.
In the United States, the cited annual prices are $134.99 for Extra and $159.99 for Premium, a $25 difference. Premium is worth paying for when you will regularly play PS1 or PSP classics, use game trials, stream supported games, or value the Sony Pictures Catalog. If those features do not matter, Extra generally delivers the better value.

Which PS Plus tier has PS1 games?
PS Plus Premium includes the Classics Catalog, and Sony defines that catalog as containing games from the original PlayStation and PSP. Extra does not include it. Sony’s own plan page states that “Classics and Game Trials [are] available only to Premium/Deluxe subscribers.” In countries where Sony sells a Deluxe tier instead of Premium, the local plan name and feature set should be checked before subscribing.

You need an active qualifying membership, and a title must still be in the catalog when you want to play it. Sony can change the lineup, and the available games are not identical in every country.

Examples of the PS1 catalog
Sony’s Classic Games Catalog announcement lists original PlayStation games such as Ape Escape, Hot Shots Golf, I.Q. Intelligent Qube, Jumping Flash, Syphon Filter, Tekken 2, Mr. Driller and Worms World Party. These examples illustrate the type of content Premium is intended to provide; they are not a guarantee that every title remains available in every region.
Sony’s catalog update for January 2025 also identifies MediEvil II as an original PlayStation game added to Premium. Additions and removals mean that the title you want should be checked in your own PlayStation Store rather than assumed from a US list or an older article.
PS Plus Extra vs Premium: benefits and prices
The following comparison uses Sony’s current US pricing snapshot, accessed in 2026. Prices can change, and other countries use different currencies, taxes, durations and promotions.

What “PS1 Classics” means on PS Plus
“PS1 Classics” is common player shorthand. Sony’s official label is Classics Catalog, and its announcement describes the feature as “Classic Games Catalog – Original PlayStation and PSP.” It is separate from the Game Catalog, which contains newer PS4 and PS5 software and is included with Extra.
That distinction matters when searching for a particular game. Finding a modern remake or a PS4 version in the Game Catalog does not mean the original PS1 release is included. Search specifically within the Classics Catalog and confirm the platform shown on the game’s store page.
Catalog access is not the same as ownership
A catalog game remains playable while your qualifying membership is active and Sony continues to offer that title in your region. If your membership expires or a game leaves the service, the catalog entitlement no longer provides access. Buying a game separately is a different transaction and is not required for titles you play through Premium while they are available.
Why the catalog can look different in your country
Sony warns that both the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog vary by region. Licensing agreements, local ratings and release rights can prevent a title from appearing in one country even when it is listed in another. A game can also be added or removed later, so a current list is not a permanent promise.

How to verify a title before upgrading
- Open the PlayStation Store or the PlayStation Plus area on your console or on the web while signed in to your account.
- Choose the PlayStation Plus catalog section and filter or search for the game by name.
- Check that the result is the original PlayStation version, not a remake, remaster or similarly named release.
- Confirm that the game displays a Premium/Deluxe catalog entitlement in your country.
- Review the listing again if you plan to subscribe later; catalog membership can change over time.
Menu names can differ between PS5, PS4, the PlayStation App and the web store. The local store listing is the authoritative check for your account and region.
When PlayStation Plus Extra is the better choice
Extra is the sensible tier when your main reason for subscribing is the rotating Game Catalog rather than retro games. It includes the catalog of PS4 and PS5 games, Ubisoft+ Classics, monthly games and the standard online, discount, Share Play, cloud-storage and exclusive-content benefits.
Choose Extra if your library is mostly modern games
If you intend to download current-generation games and do not have specific PS1 or PSP titles in mind, Premium’s Classics Catalog does not add much. Extra gives you the same Game Catalog access at the lower annual price in the cited US comparison.
Choose Extra if trials and streaming are nonessential
Extra does not include Premium’s Game Trials or cloud streaming. That omission is irrelevant if you normally buy games after reading reviews, download them locally and have enough storage and time to test them yourself. It also avoids paying for a streaming feature that may not be offered in your country or on the device you use.

Choose Extra when Sony Pictures is not a reason to subscribe
The Sony Pictures Catalog is a Premium benefit. If your subscription decision is purely about games and you already use another video service, the movie catalog should not by itself push you to the higher tier.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When PlayStation Plus Premium earns the extra $25
Premium becomes easier to justify when at least one of its exclusive features will be used repeatedly, not merely tried once.
You specifically want PS1 or PSP games
This is the clearest case. Extra cannot substitute for Classics Catalog access. If several games you genuinely plan to play are available in your local catalog, the $25 annual difference buys access to the only PS Plus tier that includes them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You use game trials to decide what to buy
Premium includes Game Trials; Extra does not. Trials can be valuable if you often hesitate over full-price purchases and will actually download and test the games. They are less compelling if you rarely buy new releases or decide from demos, reviews and free weekends elsewhere.
Best Value
You need cloud streaming where Sony supports it
Premium includes cloud streaming, while Extra does not. Availability depends on country and supported hardware or software, so check Sony’s local service information. Streaming can be useful when you want to start a supported game without a full download, but it is not a universal replacement for local installation.
You will use the Sony Pictures Catalog
Premium is the only one of these two tiers that includes Sony’s movie catalog. Treat that as a separate benefit in your calculation: it adds value only if the available films are relevant to you and you would otherwise pay for comparable access.
A practical decision method
Use this sequence before selecting a plan:
- Name the games. Write down the PS1 or PSP titles you actually expect to play, then verify each one in your local Classics Catalog. Do not upgrade based only on a historical list.
- Count Premium-only features you will use. Mark game trials, cloud streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog only when you have a concrete use for them. “Might use it” should not be treated as guaranteed value.
- Compare your local prices. The US figures are $134.99 annually for Extra and $159.99 for Premium. Your store may show different prices, currencies, taxes, plan names or promotions.
- Choose the billing period that matches your certainty. A monthly or three-month subscription limits your commitment while you test the catalog. Annual billing costs less than twelve separate monthly payments in the cited US pricing, but it makes sense only when you expect to use the service for most of the year.
- Recheck the catalog before renewal. A favorite can leave, and a desired game can arrive later. Review the local listing and the renewal price rather than assuming the original lineup and promotion still apply.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Extra includes every PS Plus game. Extra’s Game Catalog and the Classics Catalog are separate libraries.
- Confusing a remake with the PS1 release. Check the platform and edition shown in the store listing.
- Using another country’s catalog as proof. Sony explicitly allows regional differences.
- Treating a catalog list as permanent. Membership lineups change, including after a title has been advertised.
- Paying for Premium without a use case. The $25 annual US difference is worthwhile only when the added catalog, trials, streaming or movie access matters to you.
- Expecting cloud streaming everywhere. Premium includes the feature where available; local availability and supported devices still apply.
The bottom line for PS1 players
If your question is simply “Do I need Premium for PS1 Classics?”, the answer is yes: Extra does not include the Classics Catalog. For the cited US annual prices, Premium costs $25 more than Extra and adds PS1/PSP classics, game trials, cloud streaming where available and the Sony Pictures Catalog. Pick Extra for modern Game Catalog access and standard online benefits when those additions are not priorities. Pick Premium when you have verified PS1 or PSP games in your local store and expect to use the extra features often enough to make the surcharge worthwhile.
