Before trusting an AI journaling app with personal entries, check where it stores your data, what it sends to AI providers, whether content is used to train models, how long each copy is retained, and what deletion actually removes. A “no training” promise is not the same as “no provider retention,” and deleting an entry may not delete its transcript, summary, memory, or backup.
Start by mapping every copy of your journal
Ask “where is my journal data stored?” and look beyond the entry itself. An app may keep a copy on your device, sync it to its own account service or your personal cloud account, and send selected content to an AI provider. It may also store derived records separately.

- Original content: typed entries, audio, photos, video, or files.
- Derived content: transcripts, summaries, tags, insights, emotional analysis, and generated reflections.
- Context and history: conversations with the AI, saved memories, preferences, entry dates, and account-linked settings.
- Operational records: analytics, crash reports, abuse or safety logs, and backups.
Check the app’s privacy policy and settings screen, then review the AI provider’s terms that apply to the specific connection. Consumer-account terms and API terms may differ. Local storage can limit the service’s access, but it makes device security and any enabled device or cloud backups your responsibility.
Check whether entries train models—or are only processed
“Does the AI use my journal to train its model?” is separate from asking whether the provider processes the text to generate a reply. Look for whether training or service improvement is enabled by default, whether there is an opt-in or opt-out, and which data and services the choice covers. A setting for a separate consumer AI account may not govern an app’s API traffic.

Also distinguish training from temporary retention. A provider may say it does not train on submitted content while retaining inputs or outputs temporarily for abuse or safety monitoring. Identify the named language-model, transcription, hosting, analytics, and crash-reporting providers, and note what each receives. For voice or images, check whether the original recording or image is retained after transcription or text extraction.
Find retention terms for each data type
Search the policy for a duration or deletion trigger for every category: original entries, uploaded media, transcripts, AI conversations, summaries, memories, account details, logs, and backups. “As long as necessary” does not tell you how long a backup remains after deletion. Check for exceptions tied to legal obligations, safety, fraud prevention, or technical backup cycles.

Policies illustrate why app-specific detail matters. Sentari AI’s policy, last updated September 15, 2026, lists typed entries, voice recordings, transcripts, conversation messages, dates, tags, preferences, and generated summaries or insights; it says saved journal content and account information remain until deletion or an account-deletion request (Sentari AI privacy policy). Argo’s policy, last updated August 31, 2026, describes text, voice, video, and photo entries, derived content, and third-party providers for specified AI features (Argo privacy policy). These are the services’ own descriptions, not independent audits.
Understand what “delete” means before you need it
Check deletion separately for an individual entry, AI conversation, saved memory, and the whole account. For each, look for the exact in-app path, whether deletion is immediate or delayed, any grace period, what happens to backups, and what legal or safety exceptions apply. “What happens to my data when I delete my account?” should have an answer that covers derived information as well as the original text.

For example, Meet Luna’s policy effective September 29, 2026 (version 1.1) describes account deletion with a seven-day grace period, alongside full export and journal isolation (Meet Luna privacy policy). This is Luna’s stated policy; it does not establish how another app handles deletion or independently verify provider behavior.
OpenAI’s US privacy policy describes controls for model improvement, memory between chats, export, chat or account deletion, and Temporary Chat. It says information selected for deletion is removed within 30 days, subject to the policy’s stated longer-retention exceptions and circumstances in which content was already de-identified and disassociated. Those terms describe OpenAI’s service and should not be assumed to govern a journaling app’s API use (OpenAI US privacy policy).

Check export, memory, and per-entry controls
Before deleting an account or switching apps, find out whether export includes only your original entries or also transcripts, summaries, conversations, memories, and account-linked settings. Try to confirm the format and whether the export is complete enough to use outside the service.

Check whether a particular entry, journal, or session can be excluded from later AI responses. A broad AI-off switch may disable coaching, summaries, or other features that depend on AI; confirm what remains available. Unpack’s policy, for instance, describes an AI-processing setting that can disable or limit dependent features, and says resulting journal text, reflections, memories, and conversations remain until content or account deletion while source images and audio are treated as temporary processing inputs under its stated version (Unpack privacy policy).

Review device permissions and account security
Grant only the permissions needed for features you use. Check microphone, camera and photos, file access, and notifications in both the app and your device settings. If you turn off recording or image access, verify whether ordinary text entry still works. Permission settings govern device access; they do not by themselves remove content already uploaded or stored by a service.
Review authentication and security claims as well. “Encrypted” is incomplete unless the policy clarifies what is encrypted, where keys are held, and who can access the data. Consider what could be exposed if your device or account is compromised, and whether the service provides a way to revoke sessions or secure account access.
Use a short checklist before entering sensitive material
- Identify every storage location: device, app account, personal cloud, provider, and backup.
- List each data type the app collects or generates, including audio, images, transcripts, summaries, memories, and logs.
- Confirm whether content is used for training or service improvement, and whether that choice covers the app’s provider connection.
- Find a retention period or deletion trigger for each data class, including provider safety logs and backups.
- Read the separate deletion rules for entries, conversations, memories, and accounts; note timing and exceptions.
- Check export completeness, memory controls, and whether selected entries can be kept out of AI context.
- Review device permissions and security controls, then recheck the policy date and actual app version.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Mobile Health App Developers: FTC Best Practices recommends minimizing data collection, limiting access and permissions, protecting stored and transmitted data, deleting data when there is no longer a legitimate business need, and using privacy-protective defaults. The guidance is useful for evaluating an app’s approach, but it is not a certification of any particular journaling service.
