Any PlayStation game that received an official retail disc release can still be bought after a digital Store closure—from remaining new stock or the used market. A shutdown affects a particular storefront, console or payment system; it does not pull existing PS4 or PS5 discs out of circulation. Sony’s July 2026 announcement says production of new PlayStation game discs will end in January 2028, while stating that the change has “no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”
There is no authoritative, title-by-title list of every disc still available in every country. Availability changes with region, condition, seller inventory and price, so verify each listing before buying. The guide below explains how to identify a genuine physical release, whether it works with your console and which parts of the experience still depend on online services.

What you can still buy after a PlayStation Store closure
The practical rule is straightforward: a PS4 or PS5 game that shipped on a real disc has an independent purchase route. You can obtain it from a retailer with leftover stock, a specialist used-game seller or a general marketplace, even if the relevant digital Store no longer accepts new purchases.
A physical release is not the same as a box containing a download code. A disc is a tangible license and game payload that your console can read. A code-only package depends on the Store account, region and redemption service; it may become unusable if that service stops accepting redemptions.

Sony’s policy concerns manufacturing new discs from January 2028 onward. It does not erase discs manufactured earlier, cancel the licenses attached to released disc editions or prevent those copies from being resold. A title released on disc before the cutoff can therefore remain purchasable for years, but only while copies exist.
Why there is no definitive list of eligible games
Sony has described the production policy and provided support guidance, not a consolidated inventory showing every game, country, language edition and seller with stock. Inventory is distributed among publishers, retailers and individual owners. A game can be common in one region and scarce in another, or available used while new copies have disappeared.
For that reason, treat any “complete list” of physically available PlayStation games as temporary. The reliable question is whether a specific title had an official PS4 or PS5 disc edition and whether a compatible copy can be found for your region today.

Sony explicitly says that PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. A PS5 Digital Edition has no optical drive, so buying a PS4 disc for that console is a compatibility error, not a bargain. A PS5 model with a disc drive can read eligible PS4 discs, and the disc may need to stay in the drive each time you launch the installed game or use an upgrade license.
A documented example: Horizon Forbidden West physical editions
Sony’s Games Support documentation refers to the physical editions of Horizon Forbidden West. Those editions include a voucher for bonus content redeemed through PlayStation Store. This illustrates an important distinction: the base game on the disc and the bonus content supplied by a Store voucher are separate parts of the package.
If you buy a used copy, the disc can still provide the base game even when the bonus voucher has already been claimed. Do not pay a premium for “complete” packaging unless the seller can establish that the voucher is unused and that your account region can redeem it. A disc also does not automatically preserve later patches, downloadable expansions or online features.

How to verify a specific game before you buy
- Identify the physical edition. Find a publisher page, a retailer SKU or a reputable used listing that clearly names a PS4 or PS5 disc. Product photography should show the actual disc or an unambiguous disc edition, not only a generic case.
- Match the platform to your hardware. Confirm whether your console has a disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot accept PS4 or PS5 discs. If you are buying for a PS5 with a drive, check whether the PS4 version is supported and whether an upgrade is offered.
- Check region and language information. Read the case, listing and disc markings for the country or region code, supported languages, age rating and publisher. Imported copies can work but may use different DLC, account or voucher regions.
- Separate disc content from downloads. Look for wording such as “download required,” “voucher included,” “online pass” or “DLC code.” A box can contain a disc that is only a partial install or a code that is the entire game.
- Inspect used-copy condition. Ask for photographs of both sides of the disc and check for deep scratches, cracks around the center ring or an unreadable label. Confirm that the seller accepts returns if the console cannot read it.
- Check entitlements separately. Assume that used DLC, cosmetic items, season passes and bonus vouchers may be gone unless the listing specifically proves otherwise. Online modes may require a current service and an account even when the base game is on disc.
- Record current stock and price. Availability and prices are volatile. Save the listing details, edition name and seller condition at the time you buy so you can resolve a dispute if the delivered item differs.
What a physical disc does—and does not—preserve
The base game
The disc normally supplies the original game files and a license check. After installation, the console may still require the disc in the drive to prove that you own that copy. This is why a disc can remain useful after a Store stops selling a title.

Updates are separate downloads. A disc can let you install the shipped version, but it cannot guarantee access to later patches, performance improvements, accessibility options or bug fixes if the update servers are unavailable.
Downloadable content and vouchers
Expansion packs, costumes, soundtracks and bonus items may be delivered through a Store code or account entitlement. A second-hand buyer should value the disc as the base game unless the additional content is explicitly confirmed.

Online multiplayer and cloud features
Multiplayer servers, leaderboards, matchmaking, cloud saves and other connected features can be retired independently of disc sales. Owning the disc does not require a publisher to keep those services online.
Account and platform requirements
Some editions require a platform account, an initial license check or a download to complete installation. Read the package language rather than assuming that “physical” means entirely offline.

Understanding different kinds of Store shutdown
“The Store closes” can describe several different events, and each has a different effect on physical games. A payment restriction may leave purchasing available through another device. A storefront shutdown may stop new purchases while previously acquired downloads remain accessible. A broader service retirement may eventually affect redownloads or online features.

Sony’s important-notice guidance says that, beginning October 27, 2021, PS3 and PS Vita consoles could no longer use a credit or debit card or PayPal directly for digital content purchases or wallet funding. Users were directed to add wallet funds through another device, a gift card or another supported method. Sony also said that existing PlayStation Plus subscriptions and already purchased content remained accessible. That was a payment change on those consoles, not proof that every PlayStation Store service had disappeared.
Before concluding that a disc is your only option, identify the affected platform, country and service: PS3, PS Vita, PS4, PS5, the console Store application, wallet funding, new purchases or redownloads. The same announcement can have different consequences for each case.
Buying new versus used copies
Remaining new stock
New copies offer sealed packaging and a lower risk of scratched media, but popular or older titles may have disappeared from ordinary shelves. A “new” listing can also mean old inventory held by a third-party seller, so check the edition, region and return policy.
Used copies
Used discs are often the most durable supply after manufacturing ends. Compare photos, seller feedback, condition grading and return terms. Ask whether the photographed item is the exact disc and whether the case includes its original inserts. Treat every included code as potentially redeemed until verified.
Prices and scarcity
There is no fixed post-closure price. Scarcity, collector demand, print-run size, region and condition can move prices sharply. A high price does not prove that a game is rare, and a low price can indicate a missing disc, damaged media or a code-only package.

How to make a physical purchase more future-proof
- Prefer a release where the playable base game is present on the disc rather than a download-only package.
- Keep the original case, disc and inserts together; edition and region details matter when you replace a console.
- Install available patches and downloadable content while the relevant services still operate, but do not assume those files remain transferable forever.
- Keep receipts, listing screenshots and seller messages for used purchases.
- Use a console with a functioning disc drive if your collection is intended to remain usable after digital storefront changes.
Bottom line for PS4 and PS5 buyers
You can continue buying PlayStation games after a digital Store closure when those games had official disc editions and you can locate compatible stock. Sony’s January 2028 production cutoff changes the supply of newly manufactured discs; it does not invalidate earlier releases. The safest purchase is a clearly identified PS4 or PS5 disc that matches your console, region and language, with realistic expectations about patches, vouchers, DLC and online services.
