Which PlayStation Account Security Settings Should You Change First?

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start with sign-in protection, then reduce exposure and remove access you do not recognize. The most effective order is:

  1. Set up a passkey if your phone, tablet, or browser supports it.
  2. If passkeys are unavailable, enable two-step verification (2SV) and save the backup codes.
  3. Give your PlayStation account a unique password and secure the email address used as its sign-in ID.
  4. Limit profile visibility and incoming communication to the audience you actually want.
  5. Add a console login passcode and sign out on shared or public hardware.
  6. Review authorized third-party apps and unlink anything unfamiliar.

These controls protect different parts of the account. A passkey or 2SV protects authentication; privacy settings control what other players can discover or send; a console passcode protects a local session; and the authorized-app list covers access that may continue outside the PlayStation console.

1. Set up a passkey when your devices support it

A passkey replaces the PlayStation password for sign-in. PlayStation describes passkeys as “a password replacement that provide faster, easier, and more secure sign-ins to websites and apps across your devices.” Instead of typing a reusable password, you approve the sign-in with the screen lock or biometric method on a supported device.

Where to enable a passkey

  1. On the web, open PlayStation Account Management and go to Security.
  2. On PS5, open Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey.
  3. Follow the device prompt to create and save the passkey.

Most devices running iOS 16 or later and Android 9 or later support passkeys. Compatibility still depends on the browser and the sign-in route. PlayStation documents caveats involving Remote Play on Mac and some Android-and-Windows combinations, so test the sign-in method on the devices you actually use before removing other recovery options.

When a passkey is the better first choice

  • You regularly sign in on a modern phone, tablet, or browser with a screen lock.
  • You want to avoid password reuse and reduce the amount of secret information typed into websites.
  • You can keep more than one supported device available for account recovery.

Passkeys are not a reason to ignore recovery planning. If your only passkey device is lost, damaged, or unavailable, you need another supported sign-in route or a recovery method already recorded in your account.

2. Use 2-step verification if a passkey is unavailable

PlayStation 2SV adds a verification code after the password. You can receive the code by text message or generate it with an authenticator app. Choose the method you can reliably access, then record the backup codes immediately after activation.

Activation path

  1. On the web, open Account Management > Security.
  2. On PS5, go to Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security.
  3. On PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security.
  4. Select the two-step-verification option, choose text message or authenticator app, and complete the verification prompt.
  5. Save every backup code in a password manager or another private location that is available when your phone is not.

Backup codes are part of the setup, not an optional extra. Without them, access can depend on one phone, one SIM, or one authenticator installation. Do not store them in a public notes app, share them in messages, or leave a printed copy beside a shared console.

Passkey or 2SV?

Consideration Passkey 2SV
Primary credential Device-held passkey approved with the device screen lock or biometric check Password plus a one-time code
Compatibility Requires a supported phone, tablet, browser, or sign-in flow; PlayStation notes exceptions for some Remote Play on Mac and Android/Windows combinations Works through an authenticator app or text-message delivery
Phishing exposure Reduces exposure to a reusable password because the passkey is approved on the device The password remains in use, and the verification code must still be protected
Recovery planning Keep another compatible sign-in device or a documented recovery route Save the backup codes before you need them
Everyday convenience Usually a device prompt rather than password entry Enter a password and then retrieve a code

Use the passkey route when your devices and browsers support it consistently. Use 2SV when they do not, and treat the backup-code download as the final step of setup.

3. Make the password and sign-in email unique

A passkey or 2SV does not make a reused password safe on other services. Give the PlayStation account a password that is not used anywhere else, and protect the email account that receives account notices and recovery messages. If someone controls that email account, they may be able to interfere with recovery even when the console itself is secure.

Change the PlayStation password

  1. On PS5, open Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Password.
  2. On the web, use Account Management > Security.
  3. On PS4, open Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security.
  4. Create a long, unique password and save it in a reputable password manager if you use one.

Never give the password, verification code, passkey approval, or backup code to another person. PlayStation’s guidance is explicit: “Never share your account details with anyone else.” A support-sounding message, a friend using your console, or a request for a code in chat is not a reason to disclose it.

Secure the email account separately

Use a unique password and the strongest sign-in protection available on the email account associated with PlayStation. Check that its recovery phone number and alternate address are current. This is a separate account-security task: changing the PlayStation password does not secure a compromised email inbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Tighten privacy and communication controls

Authentication stops unauthorized sign-ins; privacy controls determine what legitimate users can see and how they can contact you. PlayStation lets you review visibility for your real name, profile, friends, connections, online status, current game, gaming history, and shared media. You can also control friend requests, messages, parties, and game invitations.

Open the privacy controls

  • Web: Account Management > Privacy settings.
  • PS5: Settings > Users & Accounts > Privacy.
  • PS4: Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings.

Account-level privacy changes apply across your devices, so you do not need to repeat the same choice on every console. Work through each category rather than changing only the online-status setting.

Choose a practical privacy profile

Control area What to review Safer starting decision
Personal information Real name, profile details, friends, and connections Show only what is needed for people you know
Discoverability Who can find or send a friend request to the account Restrict requests to an audience you recognize
Activity visibility Online status, current game, gaming history, and shared media Limit visibility if you do not want strangers tracking when or what you play
Incoming contact Messages, parties, and game invitations Allow contact only from the group you actually play with

If your goal is to stop strangers messaging you, the incoming-message and party settings matter more than hiding your online status alone. Review invitations separately from messages: an account can be hidden in one area and still receive requests through another.

Child accounts and family management

A child account may have controls imposed by the family manager. If a setting is unavailable or cannot be relaxed from the child profile, the family manager must review the relevant privacy and communication permission. Do not assume the child can override an account-level family restriction.

5. Add a console login passcode and end shared sessions

A protected online account can still be exposed when its profile remains signed in on a console that other people can use. PlayStation recommends a console login passcode so someone who does not know it cannot simply select your user and enter the account.

Use a passcode on private consoles

Set the login passcode from the console’s user and account security controls, then test it by switching users and restarting the console. Do not use an easily guessed sequence, and do not confuse the local console passcode with the PlayStation account password.

Sign out on shared or public hardware

Before leaving a borrowed, hotel, school, or other shared console, sign out of the PlayStation account and remove any saved sign-in information the console offers. PlayStation warns against leaving accounts active on public or shared devices. A console passcode protects your usual hardware; it cannot protect a session you leave open elsewhere.

6. Review authorized third-party apps

A password change alone may not remove every service that already has account-data access. In Account Management, inspect the list of authorized applications and services. Unlink anything you do not recognize, no longer use, or did not intentionally connect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check

  • Recognize the service name and remember authorizing it.
  • Still need the connection for a current game or companion service.
  • Have a current privacy policy and a legitimate reason to retain account-data access.

If an entry is unfamiliar, unlink it first, then complete the sign-in-protection steps above. Removing the authorization closes that particular connection; it does not replace a password change or 2SV/passkey setup.

What to do after a suspicious PlayStation login

Act in an order that prevents a second access route from being overlooked:

  1. Change the PlayStation password from a device you trust.
  2. Secure the sign-in email account and confirm its recovery details.
  3. Set up a passkey, or enable 2SV and save the backup codes.
  4. Review privacy settings if unwanted messages, invitations, or profile exposure accompanied the alert.
  5. Inspect authorized applications and unlink unfamiliar services.
  6. Sign out of any shared or public consoles where the account may still be active, then use a console login passcode on your own hardware.

Do not respond to a suspicious message by sending a password or verification code. The account’s Security and Privacy areas are the appropriate places to make these changes.

Quick path reference

Task Web PS5 PS4
Password, passkey, mobile number, or 2SV Account Management > Security Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security
Privacy and communication Account Management > Privacy settings Settings > Users & Accounts > Privacy Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings

Common setup mistakes

  • Enabling 2SV but not saving backup codes: record them during activation, before a lost phone turns into a lockout.
  • Assuming every browser supports a passkey: test the browser and Remote Play route you use; documented compatibility exceptions exist.
  • Changing only the console password: protect the email account as well, because it is part of recovery.
  • Hiding online status but leaving messages open: review messages, parties, friend requests, and invitations as separate controls.
  • Forgetting old authorizations: inspect third-party access after a suspicious login or when a connected service is no longer needed.
  • Leaving a profile signed in on another console: sign out on shared hardware and use a local login passcode on your own console.
