For a balanced setup, leave Adaptive brightness on, keep brightness only as high as you need, and use Smooth Display if you value smoother motion. When battery life matters more, turn Smooth Display off and also consider Dark theme, a shorter screen timeout, and disabling Always-on Display. Google’s guidance does not establish a universal resolution setting to lower for sharper-looking text or a specific battery saving for any of these changes.
Choose settings by what matters most
| Priority | Suggested setup | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday balance | Keep Adaptive brightness on and adjust its level when needed. Leave Smooth Display on if you notice and prefer its smoother motion. Use Dark theme if you like it, and choose a reasonable screen timeout. | Balances visibility and fluid motion with battery-conscious choices; Google does not quantify the resulting battery life. |
| Battery life first | Lower brightness as far as comfortable, turn Smooth Display off, enable Dark theme, shorten Screen timeout, and turn off Always-on Display. | Reduces brightness, refresh activity, or time the display stays lit, but gives up smoother motion and always-visible information. |
| Text and detail first | Keep the phone’s normal resolution and set font or display size for comfortable legibility. Adjust brightness to suit the environment. | Google’s reviewed guidance does not recommend lowering resolution as a general battery-saving measure or quantify a sharpness tradeoff. Available controls depend on the model. |
What each display setting changes
Brightness and Adaptive brightness
The brightness slider controls how bright the screen appears. Lowering brightness when conditions allow is one of Google’s recommended battery-saving steps. Adaptive brightness adjusts brightness for ambient light, is enabled by default, and learns from your preferences. Google notes that on Pixel 4 and later it can temporarily raise brightness above the normal maximum in very bright surroundings.

Smooth Display
Smooth Display automatically raises the refresh rate for some content on supported Pixel models. Google says the feature increases battery use, and Battery Saver disables it. Keep it on if the smoother scrolling and motion matter to you; switch it off when runtime takes priority. Maximum refresh rate and availability vary by model.
Dark theme
Dark theme darkens backgrounds in some screens and is among Google’s suggested battery-saving settings. The benefit is not guaranteed to be the same across apps or content, and Google does not state a fixed saving.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Screen timeout and Always-on Display
A shorter Screen timeout turns the screen off sooner while idle; Google gives 30 seconds as an example of a battery-conscious choice. Adaptive timeout can turn the screen off early when you are not using it. Google also recommends turning off Always-on Display to reduce battery drain.
Where to find the controls
- Open Settings → Display & touch (in some versions or locales, Display and touch).
- Choose the display control you want to change. Open Advanced for additional options.
- Adjust brightness or Adaptive brightness, Smooth Display, Dark theme, Screen timeout, or Always-on Display as available on your phone.
Check refresh-rate support for your Pixel model
Google’s screen-settings guidance lists different Smooth Display behavior across models. Examples on that page include up to 90 Hz on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7a; up to 120 Hz on Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 8a; a 60–120 Hz range on Pixel 8; and 1–120 Hz on Pixel 8 Pro. These are model-specific capabilities, not a promise that every Pixel offers the same range. Google’s hardware specifications also vary by model, and specifications and menus can change with newer devices and software. Check your exact phone and current Settings menu before relying on a model-specific figure.

What sharpness changes can—and cannot—be inferred
Brightness affects how clearly you can see the screen in a given environment, while Smooth Display changes motion fluidity. Neither is a general resolution or pixel-density control. Google’s reviewed support guidance does not identify a universal resolution switch to lower for battery life, provide a ranking of sharpness settings, or publish a percentage saved by changing an individual display setting. Avoid treating any one setup as a guaranteed sharpness or battery-life improvement for every Pixel.
