A washi-paper watch dial is made with traditional Japanese paper, not simply printed to look like paper. Its visible fibres give the dial texture and make its appearance shift with the light. In CITIZEN’s documented Eco-Drive construction, the paper also helps light reach a solar cell beneath the dial, while a transparent top plate protects the layered design.
What is different about a washi dial?
Washi is the dial material itself. CITIZEN uses Tosa washi, a traditional Japanese paper, for certain models in its The CITIZEN line. The paper’s fibres create a distinctive surface, and the dial’s appearance can change as the viewing angle and light change. CITIZEN says it first used washi for a watch dial in 2017, as part of an exploration of texture and light. CITIZEN’s design explanation and its brand history describe these choices.

That does not make “standard dial” one specific material category. Other watches use different materials and finishes, so a fair comparison is between particular models—not washi versus a single universal kind of conventional dial.
How the paper works with Eco-Drive
In CITIZEN’s documented construction, the washi is part of a layered dial rather than an exposed sheet. A transparent upper plate carries the printing; CITIZEN says it prints on this plate instead of directly on the paper. The arrangement also allows metal indexes to be used.

For the company’s Eco-Drive examples, a solar cell sits beneath the dial. Light passes through gaps between the washi fibres to reach the cell. That makes the paper’s light-transmitting quality relevant to this particular solar-powered design. It does not mean washi is required for solar watches, or that other dial materials cannot be designed to admit light. See CITIZEN’s explanation of the dial layers and light path.
What published measurements do—and do not—tell you
CITIZEN says the selected washi used for The CITIZEN weighs 1.6 grams per square metre and is 0.02 millimetres thick. These are manufacturer-published measurements of the paper, not the weight or thickness of the complete dial and not independent test results. The company describes the paper as thin and durable, but those figures alone do not establish how long a finished watch will last. Are washi watch dials durable?
CITIZEN says its paper combines thinness with durability and describes the layered construction as making the product more robust. The transparent top plate is an important part of that account: the paper is not presented as an unprotected surface exposed to everyday contact.

The cited official material does not provide an independent comparison of abrasion, moisture resistance, UV aging, or service life against metal, lacquer, enamel, or other dial materials. It is therefore not possible to conclude from the available figures that washi is more or less durable than those alternatives.

Water resistance is a specification of the complete watch, not proof that the paper itself is waterproof. For example, CITIZEN lists the AQ4106-00A at 10 ATM; that rating applies to that model. Its detailed specifications also list a dual-sphere coated glass crystal, Eco-Drive caliber A060, and a seven-month running time. Check the specifications and care guidance for the exact watch you are considering.
Hand-dyed indigo washi is one documented variant
Some The CITIZEN models use hand-dyed indigo Tosa washi. CITIZEN’s 2022 announcement describes work by Watanabe’s in Tokushima, including growing indigo plants, making dye, dyeing the paper, and finishing it. The process had to achieve the desired indigo color while retaining enough light transmission for the solar cell. CITIZEN’s announcement describes the models and process.
In a product story, CITIZEN quotes indigo dye master Kenta Watanabe describing the intended effect: “I hope that customers who handle the watch will be struck by the beauty of the colour and the pattern, and will ask the store clerk if the dial material is painted fabric, only to be told, ‘No, it’s washi.’” That is a comment on appearance, not a technical claim about performance. CITIZEN’s product story identifies Watanabe as responsible for the hand-dyed paper.

- Movement and light: Find out whether the movement is solar-powered and how the dial construction lets light reach its cell.
- Dial construction: Check whether the paper is under a transparent layer, where printing sits, and whether the indexes are printed or applied.
- Legibility: Judge the contrast between the hands, markers, and dial in the lighting conditions where you will wear it. The cited sources do not establish that washi dials are universally easier or harder to read.
- Watch specifications: Evaluate the crystal, water resistance, movement, running time, and service guidance for the model itself. These are not determined by the dial material.
